Prevalence of and risk factors for severe malaria caused by Plasmodium and dengue virus co-infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background:Co-infection with both Plasmodium and dengue virus(deNV)infectious species could have serious and fatal outcomes if left undiagnosed and without timely treatment.The present study aimed to determine the pooled prevalence estimate of severe malaria among patients with co-infection,the risk of severe diseases due to co-infection,and to describe the complications of severe malaria and severe dengue among patients with coinfection.Methods:Relevant studies published between databases between 12 September 1970 and 22 May 2020 were identified and retrieved through a search of the ISI Web of Science,Scopus,and MEDLINE.The pooled prevalence and 95%confidence interval(CI)of severe malaria among patients with Plasmodium and deNV co-infection was estimated with a random-effects model to take into account the between-study heterogeneity of the included studies.The risks of severe malaria and severe diseases due to co-infection were estimated with the pooled odds ratio(OR)and 95%CI with a random-effects model.Results:Of the 5653 articles screened,13 studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis.The results demonstrated that the pooled prevalence estimate of severe malaria among patients with co-infection was 32%(95%CI:18-47%,I 2=92.3%).Patients with co-infection had a higher risk of severe diseases than those with deNV mono-infection(odds ratio[OR]=3.94,95%CI:1.96-7.95,I 2=72%).Patients with co-infection had a higher risk of severe dengue than those with deNV mono-infection(OR=1.98,95%CI:1.08-3.63,I 2=69%).The most severe complications found in severe dengue were bleeding(39.6%),jaundice(19.8%),and shock/hypotension(17.9%),while the most severe complications found in severe malaria were severe bleeding/bleeding(47.9%),jaundice(32.2%),and impaired consciousness(7.43%).Conclusions:The present study found that there was a high prevalence of severe malaria among patients with Plasmodium and deNV co-infection.Physicians in endemic areas where these two diseases overlap should recognize that patients wi

To study fluctuations of the free surface of liquid steel in the mold,two different models with the same casting conditions but different thicknesses were employed to analyze the hydrodynamic behavior at the top of the mold.The first model was a standard thickness slab,and the second had a thickness three times wider.It is found with the second model that above the plane formed by the steel jets,it is possible to observe four three-dimensional vortexes that interact with the submerged entry nozzle（SEN）and mold walls.By using a biphasic model to simulate the interface between the liquid and air inside the mold,the flow asymmetry and the fluctuations of the free surface can be clearly observed.

The article deals with the design and implementation of a flat filter tracking digital controller for a boost DC-DC power converter. A highly perturbed switched boost converter circuit is shown to be efficiently controlled, in a trajectory tracking task for its non-minimum phase output, by means of a suitable linear filter, here addressed as a flat filter. Flat filtering is a natural robust version of generalized proportional integral control （GPIC） by which the effects of arbitrary time varying exogenous disturbances, unknown endogenous nonlinearities and un-modeled dynamics can be jointly attenuated in a conceptually similar fashion to observer-based active disturbance rejection control （ADRC） and algebraic identification based model free control （MFC） but： a） without using extended state observers and b） respecting the original system order in a time-varying simplified model while avoiding algebraic estimation techniques. The proposed control technique based on the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor chip is tested by means of realistic simulations and experimental setup.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and is highly fatal. During the last several years, research has been primarily based on the study of expression profiles using microarray technology. But now, investigators are putting into practice proteomic analyses of cancer tissues and cells to identify new diagnostic or therapeutic biomarkers for this cancer. Because the proteome reflects the state of a cell, tissue or organism more accurately, much is expected from proteomics to yield better tumor markers for disease diagnosis and therapy monitoring. This review summarizes the most relevant applications of proteomics the biomarker discovery for colorectal cancer.

Interindividual differences in the toxicity and response to anticancer therapies are currently observed in practically all available treatment regimens. A goal of cancer therapy is to predict patient response and toxicity to drugs in order to facilitate the individualization of patient treatment. Identification of subgroups of patients that differ in their prognosis and response to treatment could help to identify the best available drug therapy according the genetic profile. Several mechanisms have been suggested to contribute to chemo-therapeutic drug resistance: amplification or overexpression of membrane transporters, changes in cellular proteins involved in detoxification or in DNA repair, apoptosis and activation of oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is regarded as intrinsically resistant to chemotherapy. Several molecular markers predictive of CRC therapy have been included during the last decade but their results in different studies complicate their application in practical clinical. The simultaneous testing of multiple markers predictive of response could help to identify more accurately the true role of these polymorphisms in CRC therapy. This review analyzes the role of genetic variants in genes involved in the action mechanisms of the drugs used at present in colorectal cancer.

Tropical alpine ecosystems exhibit outstanding plant diversity and endemism while being particularly sensitive to the impacts of climate change.Although understanding spatiotemporal changes in plant species composition,richness and community structure along tropical alpine altitudinal gradients is of primary importance,both the functional and historical/biogeographic dimensions of vegetation diversity remain largely unexplored.We used Generalized Linear Models and multivariate analyses to assess changes in species,growth forms,and biogeographic groups richness and abundance,in response to habitat variables along an elevation gradient in seven summits(3800 to 4600 m asl)in the Venezuelan Andes,studied using the standardized approach of the GLORIA-Andes monitoring network.The habitat variables assessed were soil temperature(-10 cm),soil organic matter,slope inclination,and substrate cover.We found 113 species,representing72 genera,32 families,13 growth forms,and seven biogeographic origins,that included 25%of endemic elements.We observed richer vegetation,both in terms of species and growth forms,in summits with higher soil temperatures and higher SOM content,as well as higher biogeographic origin richness with increasing soil temperatures.The presence of holarctic elements increased toward higher elevations,while the occurrence of austral antarctic elements increased toward lower elevations.Our results indicate that biogeographic and functional approaches to vegetation diversity capture well the effect of abiotic filtering on community structuring in these tropical alpine environments.These findings constitute an important baseline for monitoring vegetation dynamics linked to climate change in the Venezuelan Andes by highlighting the functional and historical perspective on vegetation analyses,in contrast with more traditional approaches,based only on taxonomic species diversity.

A series of 1,3-substituted 8-styrylxanthines (11a-d) was synthesized, under chemo- and regioselective conditions, in a good overall yield. The compounds showed affinity towards both A1 and A2A-adenosine receptors by radioligand binding by means of in vitro assays. The (E)-3-ethyl-1-propyl-8-styrylxanthine (11a) showed the greatest affinity towards the A2A receptor, whereas (E)-3-pentyl-1-propyl-8-styrylxanthine (11d) showed the greatest affinity for the A1 receptor. When the 8-styrylxanthines 11a (A15Et) and 11c (A15Bu) were administrated in rats, which were previously injured with 6-hydroxydopamine at the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), the turning behavior decreased 50%. Based on these results we propose to A15Et as a potential compound to treat some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Purpose The Large Hadron Collider(LHC)at European Organization for Nuclear Research is planned to be upgraded to the high luminosity LHC.Increasing the luminosity makes muon triggering reliable and ofﬂine reconstruction very challenging.To enhance the redundancy of the Compact Muon Solenoid(CMS)Muon system and resolve the ambiguity of track reconstruction in the forward region,an improved Resistive Plate Chamber(iRPC)with excellent time resolution will be installed in the Phase-2 CMS upgrade.The iRPC will be equipped with Front-End Electronics(FEE),which can perform high-precision time measurements of signals from both ends of the strip.New Back-End Electronics(BEE)need to be researched and developed to provide sophisticated functionalities such as interacting with FEE with shared links for fast,slow control(SC)and data,in addition to trigger primitives(TPs)generation and data acquisition(DAQ).Method The BEE prototype uses a homemade hardware board compatible with the MTCA standard,the back-end board(BEB).BEE interacts with FEE via a bidirectional 4.8 Gbps optical paired-link that integrates clock,data,and control information.The clock and fast/slow control commands are distributed from BEB to the FEE via the downlink.The uplink is used for BEB to receive the time information of the iRPC’sﬁred strips and the responses to the fast/slow control commands.To have a pipelined detector data for clusterﬁnding operation,recover(deMux)the time relationship of which is changed due to the transmission protocol for the continuous incoming MUXed data from FEE.Then at each bunch crossing(BX),clusteringﬁred strips that satisfy time and spatial constraints to generate TPs.Both incoming raw MUXed detector data and TPs in a time window and latency based on the trigger signal are read out to the DAQ system.Gigabit Ethernet(GbE)of SiTCP and commercial 10-GbE are used as link standards for SC and DAQ,respectively,for the BEB to interact with the server.Results The joint test results of the BEB with iRPC and Front-End Board(FEB)show a
