The present study focused on MexCD-OprJ efflux pump and its regulatory gene nfxB in multidrug resistant (MDR) clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa collected from Kerala, South India. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription-PCR technique was employed to detect hyperexpression of the efflux pump gene, mexD. Amplicons from nfxB gene of isolates hyperexpressing the efflux pump were sequenced for mutational and phylogenetic analysis. Among 29 isolates of MDR P. aeruginosa, increased mexD transcription was detected in 10.3% of the isolates when compared with P. aeruginosa reference strain, PAO (MTCC-3541). Various synonymous and non-synonymous mutations in nfxB regulatory gene sequences were detected. Notably, mutations detected in the strains designate Pa6 and Pa7 have been found to be novel and are hitherto unreported in GenBank data base. The genetic divergence and homogeneity of the nfxB regulatory gene sequences of mexCD-oprJ operon were clearly apparent in the phylogram generated employing similar sequences retrieved from the public database.

Cannabinoids, the active components of Cannabis sativa Linnaeus, have received renewed interest in recent years due to their diverse pharmacologic activities such as cell growth inhibition, anti-inflammatory effects and tumor regression, but their use in chemotherapy is limited by their psychotropic activity. To date, cannabinoids have been successfully used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting, two common side effects that accompany chemotherapy in cancer patients. Most non-THC plant cannabinoids e.g. cannabidiol and cannabigerol, seem to be devoid of psychotropic properties. However, the precise pathways through which these molecules produce an antitumor effect have not yet been fully characterized. We therefore investigated the antitumor and anti-inflammatory activities of cannabidiol (CBD) in human prostate cancer cell lines LNCaP, DU145, PC3, and assessed whether there is any advantage in using cannabis extracts enriched in cannabidiol and low in THC. Results obtained in a panel of prostate cancer cell lines clearly indicate that cannabidiol is a potent inhibitor of cancer cell growth, with significantly lower potency in non-cancer cells. The mRNA expression level of cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), PSA (prostate specific antigen) are significantly higher in human prostate cell lines. Treatment with Cannabis extract containing high CBD down regulates CB1, CB2, VEGF, PSA, pro-inflammatory cytokines/chemokine IL-6/IL-8. Our overall findings support the concept that cannabidiol, which lacks psychotropic activity, may possess anti-inflammatory property and down regulates both cannabinoid receptors, PSA, VEGF, IL-6 and IL-8. High CBD cannabis extracts are cytotoxic to androgen responsive LNCaP cells and may effectively inhibit spheroid formation in cancer stem cells. Ribwort (Plantago lanceolata) is a small glabrous to pubescent perennial plant that is native to Europe, America, North Africa and Asia. Nowadays, it is cultivated in many countries across the globe, including Cameroon due to its extensive use in livestock and medicine. Unfortunately in Cameroon, however, the plant has been highly infested by blight, reducing its yield and medicinal value. To reduce blight infestation of ribwort and improve plant yields, we aimed to compare the efficacy of sole cow urine and combine cow dung/cow urine to inhibit blight disease caused by Phyllosticta ophiopogonis on ribwort. At the Cistercian Monastery in Mbengwi, Momo Division, Cameroon, we used a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 Blocks consisting of two treatments (cow dung mixed with cow urine (combine cow dung/urine) and sole cow urine) and one control. After spraying the different blocks of ribworts plants with combined cow dung/urine and sole cow urine at a dosage of 3% concentration, we found an incidence of blight disease of 32.8% and 35.0% on ribworts sprayed with combined cow dung/urine and sole cow urine, respectively, compared to 67.8% in the control. This implies that a mixture of cow dung/cow urine reduces the incidence of blight disease significantly. Furthermore, our pathogenicity test showed that Phyllosticta ophiopogonis (fungus) was responsible for the blight disease. Therefore, to increase ribwort growth, improve adaption and reduce Phyllosticta ophiopogonis fungal infestation in Cameroon, we recommend that the plant should be sprayed with a mixture of cow dung and cow urine at 3% concentration.

The bio-mass(Food, Fodder and Forestry, etc. ) in a habitat has beencontinuously depleting due to rapid industrialization and over-population leadingto various kinds of undesirable effects on our environment and on land masscausing deep concern to planners and management experts. In this paper, therefore, a mathematical model for degradation of bio-massis presented to study the effects of industrialization and associated growth ofpopulation, It is shown that with the increase in the levels of these factors,the bio-mass resource may not last long. It has also been pointed out mathematicallythat the level of the biomass can be maintained at desired equilibrium level bya suitable afforestation programme.
