A multimode silicon photonic integrated circuit(PIC) comprising a pair of on-chip mode(de)multiplexers with 10-mode channels and a multimode bus waveguide with sharp bends is demonstrated to enable multi-channel on-chip transmissions. The core width of the multimode bus waveguide is chosen such that it can support 10 guided modes, of which there are four transverse-magnetic polarization modes and six transverse-electric polarization modes. This multimode bus waveguide comprises sharp bends based on modified Euler curves. Experimental results demonstrate that the present silicon PIC enables the 10-channel on-chip transmission with a low inter-mode crosstalk of approximately-20 dB over a broad bandwidth of 1520–1610 nm even when the bending radius of the S-bend is as small as 40 μm. Compared with a silicon PIC using a conventional arc-bend with the same bending radius, our proposed PIC demonstrates a significant improvement.

When COVID-19 devastated older-adult organizations(long-term care homes and retirement homes), most public attention was directed toward the older-adult residents rather than their service providers. This was especially true in the case of personal support workers, some of whom are over the age of 55, putting them in two separate categories in the COVID-19 settings:(1) a vulnerable and marginalized group who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19;and(2) essential healthcare workers. Since the current disaster-driven research, practice, and policy have primarily focused on generalized assumptions that older-adults are a vulnerable, passive, and dependent group rather than recognizing their diversity, expertise, assets, and experiences, this study aimed to identify their contributions from the perspective of older-adult personal support worker(OAPSW). This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews, inviting 15 OAPSWs from the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. This study uncovered the OAPSWs' contribution at three levels: individual(enhancing physical health, mental health, and overall well-being), work(improving working environment and service and supporting co-workers), and family(protecting their nuclear and extended families). The outcomes inform the older-adult research, practice, policy, public discourse, and education by enhancing the appreciation of older-adults' diverse strengths and promoting their engagement and contributions in disaster settings.

We derived a theoretical solution of the shock stand-off distance for a non-equilibrium flow over spheres based on Wen and Hornung＇s solution and Olivier＇s solution. Compared with previous approaches, the main advantage of the present approach is allowing an analytic solution without involving any semi-empirical parameter for the whole non-equilibrium flow regimes. The effects of some important physical quantities therefore can be fully revealed via the analytic solution. By combining the current solution with Ideal Dissociating Gas（IDG） model, we investigate the effects of free stream kinetic energy and free stream dissociation level（which can be very different between different facilities） on the shock stand-off distance.

Defective interfering genes(DIGs)are short viral genomes and interfere with wild-type viral ***,we demonstrate that the new designed SARS-CoV-2 DIG(CD3600)can significantly inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2 including Alpha,Delta,Kappa and Omicron variants in human HK-2 cells and influenza DIG(PAD4)can significantly inhibit influenza virus replication in human A549 *** dose of influenza DIGs prophylactically protects 90%mice from lethal challenge of A(H1N1)pdm09 virus and CD3600 inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in hamster lungs when DIGs are administrated to lungs one day before viral *** further investigate the gene delivery vector in the respiratory tract,a peptidic TAT2-P1&LAH4,which can package genes to form small spherical nanoparticles with high endosomal escape ability,is demonstrated to dramatically increase gene expression in the lung ***2-P1&LAH4,with the dual-functional TAT2-P1(gene-delivery and antiviral),can deliver CD3600 to significantly inhibit the replication of Delta and Omicron SARS-CoV-2 in hamster *** peptide-based nanoparticle system can effectively transfect genes in lungs and deliver DIGs to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 variants and influenza virus in vivo,which provides the new insight into the drug delivery system for gene therapy against respiratory viruses.

BACKGROUND This case study describes an atypical presentation of avascular necrosis(AVN)of the first metatarsal head,which is largely unfounded in the *** SUMMARY A healthy 24-year-old female initially presented with pain at the first metatarsophalangeal joint(MTPJ)and was diagnosed with AVN by physical examination and magnetic resonance *** patient demonstrated atypically poor progress in recovery,despite being in otherwise good health and being of young age,with no history of corticosteroid or alcohol *** patient also did not have any history or clinical features of autoimmune disease or vasculitis,such as systemic lupus *** patient was managed with conservative treatment for 18 mo,which allowed for gradual return of full range of motion of the first MTPJ and subsiding pain,permitting the patient to return to highintensity sports training and full *** her recovery,many differential diagnoses were ruled out through specific investigations leading to further reinforcement of the diagnosis of AVN of the 1st metatarsal *** Atypical AVN may occur with no predisposing risk *** is mainly conservative,with unclear guidelines in literature on management.

Objective:To investigate the effect of honokiol on oxidative damage in HaCaT human ***:HaCaT cells were exposed to hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)),following pretreatment with various concentrations of *** alleviating effects of honokiol on HaCaT cell viability and cell death,reactive oxygen species(ROS)production,DNA damage,mitochondrial dynamics,and inhibition of adenosine triphoaphate production against H_(2)O_(2)were *** blotting analysis was used to analyze the expression levels of specific ***:Honokiol suppressed H_(2)O_(2)-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damage by blocking abnormal ROS *** also prevented apoptosis by inhibiting loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytosol,decreasing the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio,and reducing the activity of caspase-3 in H_(2)O_(2)-stimulated HaCaT *** addition,honokiol attenuated H_(2)O_(2)-induced reduction of adenosine triphosphate content,and activation of AMP-activated protein kinase(AMPK)was markedly promoted by honokiol in H_(2)O_(2)-stimulated ***,the anti-apoptosis and anti-proliferative activity of honokiol against H_(2)O_(2)was further enhanced by adding an activator of AMPK,indicating that honokiol activated AMPK in HaCaT keratinocytes to protect against oxidative ***:The present results indicate that honokiol may be useful as a potential therapeutic agent against various oxidative stress-related skin diseases.

There have been reports on sheet forming of Mg alloy in industry via the punch and die method; this paper is probably the first formal one for studying the sheet formability of AZ31 employing pressurized gas to press the sheet into a female die cavity at various elevated temperatures. The results indicate it is feasible to form a rectangular box via pressurized gas from extruded sheets of 0.5 and 1.7 mm thick. The formed box has 1:2 depth over width ratio, which should be large enough when dealing with realistic industrial sheet forming parts. Presently, forming a sheet of 0.5 mm thick is considered a technical challenge by industry, and it is conquered as demonstrated in this paper. Gas forming technique applied to Mg alloy is unprecedented and shows potential for industrial utilization.
