Research on Arterial Stiffness Status in Type 2 Diabetic Patients Based on Pulse Waveform Characteristics

For patients with type 2 diabetes,the evaluation of pulse waveform characteristics is helpful to understand changes in arterial ***,there is a lack of comprehensive analysis of pulse waveform ***,we aimed to investigate the changes in pulse waveform characteristics in patients with type 2 diabetes due to increased arterial *** this study,25 patients with type 2 diabetes and 50 healthy subjects were selected based on their clinical ***,height,weight,blood pressure,and pulse pressure were collected as the subjects’basic *** brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)was collected as an index of arterial *** of time[the pulse wave period(T),the relative positions of peak point(T1)and notch point(T2),and pulse wave time difference between upper and lower limbs(T3)]and area[the total waveform area(A),and the areas of the waveform before(A1)and after(A2)the notch point]were extracted from the pulse wave signals as pulse waveform *** independent sample t-test was performed to determine whether there were significant differences between ***’s correlation analysis was performed to determine the correlations between pulse waveform parameters and *** were significant differences in T3,A,A1,and A2 between the groups(p<0.05).For patients with type 2 diabetes,there were statistically significant correlations between baPWV and T3,A,A1,and A2(p<0.05).This study quantitatively assessed changes in arterial pulse waveform parameters in patients with type 2 *** was demonstrated that pulse waveform characteristics(T3,A,A1,and A2)could be used as indices of arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Input Data Dependency of a Genetic Algorithm to Solve the Set Covering Problem

A genetic algorithm to solve the set covering problem proposed in the literature had some improvements which gave better solutions, i.e., better chromosomes in the first starting population, taking full account of domain specific knowledge with sound programming skill. We have further investigated the input data dependency of their genetic algorithm, i.e., the dependency on costs and density. We have found that for input problem data sets with densities greater than or equal to 3%, our genetic algorithm is still practical both in computing time and approximation ratio.

Durability of Bridge Expansion Joints with Perforated Dowels Under Traffic Impact Loading

In design phases, expansion joints are required to have movement capacity, bearing capacity for static and dynamic loading, watertight, low noise emission and traffic safety. On the basis of the fact that failure due to dynamic loading is the main reason for the observed damages, attention is focused on the bearing capacity for dynamic loading governed by impact, because it differs from the static loading. In this study, from the viewpoint of durability, experimental studies for dynamic behavior were conducted for aluminium alloy expansion joints with perforated dowels. The validity of the perforated dowels against traffic impact loading was confirmed by both experimental and numerical studies.

Preparation of large mesoporous tin dioxide (lm-SnO_2) under various conditions was attempted by utilizing a self-assembly of a triblock copolymer,P123:(EO)_(20)(PO)_(70)(EO)_(20) or F127:(EO)_(106)(PO)_(70)(EO)_(106)(EO:ethylene oxide and PO: propylene oxide).The sensor fabricated from calcined lm-SnO_2 powder,which had been prepared by using P123 as a template,Na_2SnO_3 as a tin source,and TEOS as an additive ([TEOS]/[Na_2SnO_3]=0.5 in the precursor solution),showed the largest response to 1×10^(-3) hydrogen at 350℃among the sensors *** existence of two kinds of SnO_2 particles with different sizes (ca.100 nm and several nm in diameter) may be important to improve the hydrogen sensing properties drastically.

Castration-induced expression of caspase-1 in epithelia of accessory sex organs in male rats

Aim: As an attempt to clarify the molecular basis of castration-induced apoptosis, this study was undertaken todemonstrate the expression of caspase-1 in male accessory sex organs of rats. Methods and results; cDNA of ratcaspase-1 was cloned by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from the ventral prostates. The open readingframe predicts 402 amino acids, which shows more than 91% and 63% identity to those of mouse and human, respec-tively. Northern analyses demonstrated the presence of castration-induced up-regulation of the 1.6 kb transcript in theventral prostate and the seminal vesicles. Finally, the authors demonstrated the caspase-1 transcripts in the epithelia ofthese tissues by in situ hybridization analyses. Conclusion; Castration induces the expression of caspase-1 tran-scripts in the epithelia of ventral prostate and seminal vesicle. These observations suggest a possible role of caspase-1 inapoptosis in male accessory sex organs.

Effects of fibril- or fixed-collagen on matrix metalloproteinase-1 and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 production in the human hepatocyte cell line HLE

AIM:Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) are central to the spontaneous resolution of liver fibrosis. The mechanisms involved have been investigated in hepatic stellate cells (HSC), but not in hepatocytes. We investigated the effects of fibril- and fixed-collagen on MMP-1 and TIMP-1 production in hepatocytes, using the HLE cell line. METHODS: Fibril type I and IV collagen were prepared by HCI digestion of type I and IV collagen, respectively. For fixed-collagen, culture dishes were coated with fibril type I or IV collagen and fixed by ultraviolet. Type I collagenase activity was measured using fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled type I collagen. MMP-1 and TIMP-1 in HLE cells were measured by a one-step sandwich enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS: Both fibril type I and IV collagen significantly increased type I collagenase activity about two-fold compared with no fibril collagen. The effects of the fibril collagen were not affected by the coating condition. There was no significant difference in the effects on collagenase activity between cells cultured in medium containing fibril type I collagen and those cultured in the presence of type IV collagen. Both types of fibril collagen significantly increased MMP-1 production, and showed more than 10-fold higher levels of MMP-1 than the control. The enhanced MMP-1 production by fibril collagens was unaffected by the coating condition. By contrast, TIMP-1 production was not changed by the addition of fibril type I or IV collagen, and neither was it affected by the coating conditions. Coating with type I collagen significantly suppressed MMP-1 production by almost one-tenth compared with no coating. By contrast, TIMP-1 production was not affected by either the absence of a collagen coat or by increasing the concentration of the coating collagen. In this study,we proposed a novel micro-scale additive manufacturing method based on the optical potential formed by a Bessel *** proposed technique is expected to show no deterioration in manufacturing resolution due to heat genera-tion,to be applicable to various materials,and to be able to be performed in an air *** basic principle of the proposed method involves accumulating and stacking particles dispersed in air by using optical radiation *** this paper,the trajectory of the accumulated particles was numerically estimated and experimentally *** numerical and experimental results agreed well;specfially,the back ground flow carried the particles to the optical axis of the Bessel beam,and then the particles were localized at the bottom of the optical potential valley on the ***,a pillar structure was fabricated with polystyrene particles having a diameter of 1 um,which indicated that the proposed technique was promising for practical applications.
