Free vibration analysis of non-homogeneous orthotropic plates resting on a Pasternak type of elastic foundation is investigated. A set of admissible orthogonal polynomials are generated with Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure and adopted in the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Accuracy and applicability of the method are examined by comparison of the results for different boundary conditions and material types with those available in literature. It is found that this method has good accuracy regardless of type of boundary condition and yields very accurate results even with low number of terms of orthogonal polynomials for the first mode of vibration. For higher modes of vibration, higher terms of orthogonal polynomials should be used. The effects of foundation parameter, density and non-homogeneity parameters on natural frequency are examined. It is concluded that natural frequency of plates are more sensitive to shearing layer coefficient rather than Winkler coefficient and density parameter has weakening effect on natural frequency.

Free vibration analysis of symmetrically laminated composite plates resting on Pasternak elastic support and coupled with an ideal, incompressible and inviscid fluid is the objective of the present work. The fluid domain is considered to be infinite in the length direction but bounded in the depth and width directions. In order to derive the eigenvalue equation, Rayleigh-Ritz method is applied for the fluid-plate-foundation system. The efficiency of the method is proved by comparison studies with those reported in the open literature. At the end, parametric studies are carried out to examine the impact of different parameters on the natural frequencies.

Dynamics and vibration of control valves under flow-induced vibration are analyzed. Hydrodynamic load characteristics and structural response under flow-induced vibration are mainly influenced by inertia, damping, elastic, geometric characteristics and hydraulic parameters. The purpose of this work is to investigate the dynamic behavior of control valves in the response to self-excited fluid flow. An analytical and numerical method is developed to simulate the dynamic and vibrational behavior of sliding dam valves, in response to flow excitation. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed model, the simulation results are validated with experimental ones. Finally, to achieve the optimal valve geometry, numerical results for various shapes of valves are compared. Rounded valve with the least amount of flow turbulence obtains lower fluctuations and vibration amplitude compared with the flat and steep valves. Simulation results demonstrate that with the optimal design requirements of valves, vibration amplitude can be reduced by an average to 30%.

Mitochondrial redox states provide important information about energy-linked biological processes and signaling events in tissues for various disease phenotypes including *** redox scanning method developed at the Chance laboratory about 30 years ago has allowed 3D highresolution(∼50×50×10µm^(3))imaging of mitochondrial redox state in tissue on the basis of the fluorescence of NADH(reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)and Fp(oxidized flavoproteins including flavin adenine dinucleotide,i.e.,FAD).In this review,we illustrate its basic principles,recent technical developments,and biomedical applications to cancer diagnostic and therapeutic studies in small animal *** developed calibration procedures for the redox imaging using reference standards allow quantification of nominal NADH and Fp concentrations,and the concentration-based redox ratios,e.g.,Fp/(Fp+NADH)and NADH/(Fp+NADH)in *** calibration facilitates the comparison of redox imaging results acquired for different metabolic states at different times and/or with different instrumental settings.A redox imager using a CCD detector has been developed to acquire 3D images faster and with a higher in-plane resolution down to 10µ*** vivo imaging and in vivo imaging of tissue mitochondrial redox status have been demonstrated with the CCD *** of tissue redox imaging in small animal cancer models include metabolic imaging of glioma and myc-induced mouse mammary tumors,predicting the metastatic potentials of human melanoma and breast cancer mouse xenografts,differentiating precancerous and normal tissues,and monitoring the tumor treatment response to photodynamic *** future directions for the development of redox imaging are also discussed.

Reactive oxygen species(ROS)play a vital role in cell signaling and redox regulation,but when present in excess,lead to numerous *** quantitative characterization of mitochondrial superoxide anion(O^(·-)_(2))production in fetal pulmonary artery endothelia cells(PAECs)has never been *** aim of this study is to assess mitochondrial O^(·-)_(2)pro-duction in cultured PAECs over time using a novel quantitative optical *** rate,the sources,and the dynamics of O^(·-)_(2)production were assessed using targeted metabolic modulators of the mitochondrial electron transport chain(ETC)complexes,specifically an uncoupler and inhibitors of the various ETC complexes,and inhibitors of extra-mitochondrial sources of O^(·-)_(2).After stabilization,the cells were loaded with nanomolar mitochondrial-targeted hydroethidine(Mito-HE,MitoSOX)online during the experiment without washout of the residual ***-lapse fuorescence microscopy was used to monitor the dynamic changes in O^(·-)_(2)fluorescence intensity over time in *** transient behaviors of the fuorescence time course showed exponential increases in the rate of O^(·-)_(2) production in the presence of the ETC uncoupler or *** most dramatic and the fastest increase in O^(·-)_(2)production was observed when the cells were treated with the uncoupling agent,*** also showed that only the complex IV inhibitor,KCN,attenuated the marked surge in O^(·-)_(2)production induced by *** results showed that mitochondrial respiratory complexes I,III and IV are sources of O^(·-)_(2) production in PAECs,and a new observation that ROS production during uncoupling of mitochondrial res-piration is mediated in part via complex *** novel method can be applied in other studies that examine ROS production under stress condition and during ROS mediated injuries in vritro.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome(POTS)is a disabling condition characterized by orthostatic intolerance with tachycardia in the absence of drop-in blood pressure.A custom-built near-infrared spectroscopy device(NIRS)is applied to monitor the muscle oxygenation,noninvasively in patients undergoing incremental head-up tilt table(HUT).Subjects(6 POTS patients and 6 healthy controls)underwent 30 mins of 70on a *** results showed a signicant difference in deoxyhemoglobin(Hb),change-in-oxygenation(△Oxy)and blood volume(△BV)between patients and healthy ***,oxyhemoglobin(HbO_(2))showed a significantly faster rate of change in the healthy controls during the first 10 mins of the tilt and during the *** NIRS muscle oximetry tool provides quantitative measurements of blood oxygenation monitoring in diseases such as POTS.

Genetic polymorphisms of MAFK, encoding a small Maf protein, are associated with susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in Japan

To investigate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms in maf protein K (MAFK), which encodes the MAFK, lead to increased susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in the Japanese population. METHODSThis case control study examined the associations between MAFK single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs4268033 G>A, rs3735656 T>C and rs10226620 C>T) and ulcerative colitis susceptibility in 174 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) cases, and 748 subjects without no lower abdominal symptoms, diarrhea or hematochezia (controls). In addition, as the second controls, we set 360 subjects, who have an irregular bowel movement without abnormal lower endoscopic findings (IBM controls). RESULTSThe genotype frequency of rs4268033 AA and allelic frequency of the rs4268033A allele were significantly higher in the UC cases than in both controls (P = 0.0005 and < 0.0001, P = 0.015 and 0.0027 vs controls and IBM controls, respectively). Logistic regression analysis after adjustment for age and gender showed that the rs4268033 AA and rs3735656 CC genotypes were significantly associated with susceptibility to UC development (OR = 2.63, 95%CI: 1.61-4.30, P = 0.0001 and OR = 1.81; 95%CI: 1.12-2.94, P = 0.015, respectively). Similar findings were observed by the comparison with IBM controls. In addition, the rs4268033 AA genotype was significantly associated with all phenotypes of UC except early onset. There was no significant association between rs10226620 and ulcerative colitis. CONCLUSIONOur results provide the first evidence that MAFK genetic polymorphisms are significantly associated with susceptibility to UC development. In particular, rs4268033 is closely associated with an increased risk for the development of UC.

Reactive oxygen species(ROS)have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many acute and chronic pulmonary disorders such as acute lung injury(ALI)in adults and bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD)in premature *** infection and oxygen toxicity,which result in pulmonary vascular endot belial injury,contribute to impaired vascular growth and alveolar simplfcation soen in the lungs of premature infants with *** induces ALI,reduces cell proliferation,cauuses DNA damage and promotes cell death by causi ng mitochondrial dys *** objective of this study was to use an optical imaging technique to evaluate the variations in fluorescence intensities of the auto fuorescent mitochondrial metabolic coenzymes,NADH and FAD in four different groups of *** ratio of these fluorescence signals(NA DH/FAD),referred to as NADH redox ratio(NADH RR)has been used as an indicator of tisue metabolism in ***,we investigated whether the changes in metabolic state can be used as a marker of oxidative stress caused by hyperoxia and bacterial lipopolysaccharide(LPS)exposure in neonatal mat *** examined the tissue redox states of lungs from four groups of rat pups:nomoxic(21%O_(2))pups,hyperoxic(90%O_(2))pups,pups treated with LPS(normoxic+LPS),and pups treated with LPS and hyperoxia(hyperoxic+LPS).Our results show that hyperoxia oxidized the respiratory chain as reflected by a~31%docrease in lung tssue NADH RR as compared to that for normoxic *** treatment alone or with hyperoxia had no significant ffect on lung tssue NADH RR as compared to that for normoxic or hyperoxic lungs,***,NADH RR serves as a quantitative marker of oxidative stress level in lung injury caused by two clinically important conditions:hyperoxia and LPS exposure.

AIM:To clarify the association between a polymorphism-449 C>G(rs72696119) in 5'-UTR of NFKB1 with ulcerative colitis(UC).METHODS:The studied population comprised 639 subjects,including patients with UC(UC cases,n = 174) and subjects without UC(controls,n = 465).We employed polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism to detect the gene ***:The rs72696119 G allele frequencies in controls and UC cases were 33.4% and 38.5%,respectively(P = 0.10).Genotype frequency of the GG homozygote in UC cases was significantly higher than that in controls(P = 0.017),and the GG homozygote was significantly associated with susceptibility to UC [odds ratio(OR),1.88;95%CI,1.13-3.14].In male subjects,the GG homozygote was associated with an increased risk for UC(OR,3.10;95%CI,1.47-6.54;P = 0.0053),whereas this association was not found in female *** addition,the GG homozygote was significantly associated with the risk of non-continuous disease(OR,2.06;95%CI,1.12-3.79;P = 0.029),not having total colitis(OR,2.40;95%CI,1.09-3.80,P = 0.040),disease which developed before 20 years of age(OR,2.80;95%CI,1.07-7.32,P = 0.041),no hospitalization(OR,2.28;95%CI,1.29-4.05;P = 0.0090) and with a maximum of 8 or less on the UCDAI score(OR,2.45;95%CI,1.23-4.93;P = 0.022).CONCLUSION:Our results provide evidence that NFKB1 polymorphism rs72696119 was significantly associated with the development of *** polymorphism influences the susceptibility to and pathophysiological features of UC.
