Tensile strength and failure behavior of rock-mortar interfaces: Direct and indirect measurements

The tensile strength at the rock-concrete interface is one of the crucial factors controlling the failure mechanisms of structures,such as concrete gravity *** the critical importance of the failure mechanism and tensile strength of rock-concrete interfaces,understanding of these factors remains very *** study investigated the tensile strength and fracturing processes at rock-mortar interfaces subjected to direct and indirect tensile *** image correlation(DIC)and acoustic emission(AE)techniques were used to monitor the failure mechanisms of specimens subjected to direct tension and indirect loading(Brazilian tests).The results indicated that the direct tensile strength of the rock-mortar specimens was lower than their indirect tensile strength,with a direct/indirect tensile strength ratio of 65%.DIC strain field data and moment tensor inversions(MTI)of AE events indicated that a significant number of shear microcracks occurred in the specimens subjected to the Brazilian *** presence of these shear microcracks,which require more energy to break,resulted in a higher tensile strength during the Brazilian *** contrast,microcracks were predominantly tensile in specimens subjected to direct tension,leading to a lower tensile *** monitoring of the cracking processes in the rock-mortar interfaces revealed that they show AE precursors before failure under the Brazilian test,whereas they show a minimal number of AE events before failure under direct *** to different microcracking mechanisms,specimens tested under Brazilian tests showed lower roughness with flatter fracture surfaces than those tested under direct tension with jagged and rough fracture *** results of this study shed light on better understanding the micromechanics of damage in the rock-concrete interfaces for a safer design of engineering structures.

Techno-economic optimization of a sustainable system to cogenerate power and water for remote areas

In this study,a new water and power cogeneration plant,employing photovoltaic(PV)and photovoltaic-thermal(PVT)panels simultaneously,is designed and optimized for a village struggling to provide energy and potable water in *** system includes a solar energy unit to generate clean electricity and heat,and a reverse osmosis unit to produce drinking ***-economic optimization is performed by implementing a genetic algorithm,and a comprehensive water and energy management strategy is designed and presented in detail,expandable for future works.A new method,the logarithmic model,is used to calculate the depth of discharge(DOD)of lithium-ion batteries,which was previously a fixed and predetermined value in previous *** indices,the constraints of the optimization process,are also introduced to measure the reliabilities of different *** effects of the system components on total cost are investigated and a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to find the best solution to increase the penetration of renewable-energy *** results reveal that considering the depth of discharge of batteries and water storage tank capacity as decision variables reduces the system’s life-cycle cost(by 5.1%for changeable DODs).Furthermore,the simultaneous use of PV and PVT panels decreases the life-cycle cost considerably by≤19%compared with the use of only PVT ***,the cost of the battery causes a decrease in the cost of electricity storage and the cost of producing and storing fresh water.

Despite improved survival outcomes across many cancer types,the prognosis remains grim for certain solid organ cancers including glioblastoma and pancreatic *** in these cancers,the control achieved by time-limited interventions such as traditional surgical resection,radiation therapy,and chemotherapy is short-lived.A new form of anti-cancer therapy called therapeutic alternating electric fields(AEFs)or tumor treating fields(TTFields)has been shown,either by itself or in combination with chemotherapy,to have anti-cancer effects that translate to improved survival outcomes in *** the pre-clinical and clinical data are promising,the mechanisms of TTFields are not fully *** investigations are underway to better understand how and why TTFields is able to selectively kill cancer cells and impede their *** purpose of this review is to summarize and discuss the reported mechanisms of action of TTFields from pre-clinical studies(both in vitro and in vivo).An improved understanding of how TTFields works will guide strategies focused on the timing and combination of TTFields with other therapies,to further improve survival outcomes in patients with solid organ cancers.

Fabrication of an electrochemical sensor for determination of doxorubicin in human plasma and its interaction with DNA

In this work, an electrochemical sensor was fabricated for determination of an anthracycline, doxorubicin(DOX) as a chemotherapy drug in plasma based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified platinum electrode(Pt/MWCNTs). DOX was effectively accumulated on the surface of modified electrode and generated a pair of redox peaks at around 0.522 and 0.647 V(vs. Ag/Ag Cl) in Britton Robinson(B-R) buffer(p H 4.0, 0.1 M). The electrochemical parameters including p H, type of buffer, accumulation time, amount of modifier and scan rate were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, there was a linear correlation between cathodic peak current and concentration of DOX in the range of 0.05–4.0 μg/m L with the detection limit of 0.002 μg/m L. The number of electron transfers(n) and electron transfer-coefficient(α) were estimated as 2.0 and 0.25, respectively. The constructed sensor displayed excellent precision, sensitivity, repeatability and selectivity in the determination of DOX in plasma. Moreover, cyclic voltammetry studies of DOX in the presence of DNA showed an intercalation mechanism with binding constant(K_b) of 1.12×10~5L/mol.

Improving mold powder through crystallization using calcium fluoride and manganese oxide for continuous casting of steel

Mold powder is generally made of SiO2 and CaO with little amount of calcium fluoride(CaF_(2))and ***,F^(-)has a crucial effect on viscosity and crystallization of the ***,emission of toxic materials containing F^(-)constituent such as HF and SiF4 leads to serious environmental ***,six powder samples were made during this research to study the effects of such compounds as calcium fluoride(CaF_(2))and manganese oxide(MnO)on the crystallization of mold powder and compare with that of the original mold *** considered the chemical compounds of these six samples,two were finally chosen:powder sample A and powder sample *** former was a simulated sample of the original mold powder using CaF_(2),and the latter was a less-F^(-)sample in which MnO was used as a substitution for F^(-)in the compounds of the mold *** other words,the amount of F^(-)was cut in half comparing to that of the original mold *** thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA)was performed on the original mold powder,the simulated sample of the original mold powder and the less-F^(-)*** results of the TGA demonstrated the reduction of thermal loss in samples A and E comparing to the original mold *** the other hand,the results of differential thermal analysis(DTA)of these three samples,i.e.,original mold powder and samples A and E,demonstrated that melting and crystallization temperatures of the original mold powder were similar to those of samples A and ***,it can be concluded that samples A and E are potential laboratory-scale substitutions for the original mold powder.

Brain computer interface(BCI)systems permit individuals with motor disorders to utilize their thoughts as a mean to control external *** is a promising interdisciplinary field that gained the attention of many ***,the development of BCI systems is facing several challenges,such as network *** Medium Access Control(MAC)Protocol is the bottle-neck of network *** are many MAC protocols that can be utilized for dependable transmission in BCI applications by altering their control ***,modifying these parameters is another source of concern due to the scarcity in knowledge about the effect of ***,there is still no instrument that can receive and actualize these parameters on transmitters embedded inside the *** this paper,we propose two novel MAC protocols using passive UHF-RFID,the proposed protocols provide efficient and reliable communication between the transmitters and the *** UHF-RFID transmitters were used because they are energy efficient which makes them compatible with BCI *** first protocol is designed for the EEG *** the second protocol was designed for the ECoG *** evaluation results showed the validity of the proposed protocols in terms of network *** results also proved that the protocols are suitable and reliable for designing efficient BCI applications.

Medicinal Properties of Foeniculum Vulgare Mill,in Traditional Iranian Medicine and Modern Phytotherapy

Foeniculum vu/gare Mill. （F. vu/gare）, commonly known as Fennel, is a popular medicinal plant with various pharmacological activities mentioned in traditional Iranian medicine （TIM） and modern phytotherapy such as antioxidant, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, bronchodilatory, estrogenic, diuretic, lithontripic, galactogogue, emmenagogue, antithrombotic, hypotensive, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, memory enhancing, and antimutagenic activities. No serious adverse events were recorded after ingestion of F. vu/gare except some cases of allergic reactions. The estrogenic activity of F. vu/gare brings some side effects such as decrease in protein concentration and acid and alkaline phosphatase in male genital organs, increase in weight of mammary glands and reproductive organs in women and premature thelarohe in girls. However, no evidence of teratogenicity was recorded, it is better not to use F. vulgare during pregnancy due to its estrogenic activity. Because of inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 （CyP3A4）, the pharmacokinetic parameters of drugs mainly metabolized by this isozyme may be affected by F. vu/gare. In addition, a significant interaction between cyprofloxacin and F. vu/gare was demonstrated. The aim of current paper is to review pharmacological properties, toxicity and adverse events, and drug interactions of ***/gare and brings conclusive results about the use of this plant in men, women and during pregnancy.
