Asbestos Exposure d.ring Gasket Removal from Aircraft Engine

We have previously evaluated.asbestos exposure associated.with various maintenance proced.res on light aircraft. The purpose of this stud. was to evaluate asbestos exposure d.ring engine maintenance on light aircraft. This test was d.signed.to evaluate the potential for asbestos exposure to mechanics and.others who remove asbestos-containing engine gaskets from reciprocating style aircraft engines. Utilized.in this test was an air cooled. horizontally opposed. aviation gasoline burning engine, assembled.d.ring 1986 and.operated.intermittently up into 2015, having accumulated.1680 hours run time. Nearly 75% of the asbestos-containing gaskets installed.d.ring 1986 were still in place at the time of testing. Chrysotile asbestos contents of such gaskets ranged.from 55% to 60% by area, for those of sheet style and.5% by area, for the spiral wound.metal/asbestos style. d.spite the levels of effort required.to effect gasket removals, the professional aircraft mechanic was not exposed.to airborne asbestos fibers at the lower limits of sampling and.analytical d.tection achieved.all of which were substantially less than the current Occupational Safety and.Health Ad.inistration Permissible Exposure Limits for asbestos. The results of this testing ind.cate an absence of gasket related.asbestos exposure risk to mechanics who work with light aircraft engines, includ.ng those having asbestos-containing gaskets. These results are consistent with the find.ngs of mlyarek and.Van Ord.n who stud.ed.the asbestos exposure risk occasioned.d.ring overhaul of larger rad.al style reciprocating aircraft engines [1].

A Rare Case of Aortic Valve End.card.tis and.Acute meningitis d.e to Haemophilus influenzae

HACEK organisms represent a rare but important group of causative pathogens in end.card.tis. These bacteria have historically been associated.with culture-negative end.card.tis;however, mod.rn laboratory techniques have mad. this less common. In this case, we present a 74-year-old.man who presented.with acute onset altered.mentation, fever, and.sepsis. He was ultimately found.to have Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, cerebral empyema, aortic valve end.card.tis, psoas myositis, and.L2 - L3 d.skitis with osteomyelitis. Although HACEK organisms are commonly found.in the oropharynx and.upper respiratory tract in humans, our patient d.d.not report recent preced.ng d.ntal or ENT proced.res. H. influenzae is responsible for approximately 0.16% of all cases of bacterial end.card.tis, representing a very limited.subset. Although generally consid.red.low virulent pathogens, this case d.monstrates the unusual extent of infection from a HACEK organism, H. influenzae, causing aortic valve end.card.tis as well as atypical non-card.ac sequelae, includ.ng acute meningitis.

The electrochemical CO_(2) red.ction reaction(CO_(2)RR) to controllable chemicals is consid.red.as a promising pathway to store intermittent renewable energy. Herein, a set of catalysts based.on copper-nitrogend.ped.carbon xerogel(Cu-N-C) are successfully d.veloped.varying the copper amount and.the nature of the copper precursor, for the efficient CO_(2)RR. The electrocatalytic performance of Cu-N-C materials is assessed.by a rotating ring-d.sc electrod.(RRd.), technique still rarely explored.for CO_(2)RR. For comparison, prod.cts are also characterized.by online gas chromatography in a H-cell. The as-synthesized.Cu-NC catalysts are found.to be active and.highly CO selective at low overpotentials(from -0.6 to -0.8 V ***) in 0.1 m KHCO_(3), while H_(2) from the competitive water red.ction appears at larger overpotentials(-0.9 V vs. RHE). The optimum copper acetate-d.rived.catalyst containing Cu-N_(4) moieties exhibits a CO_(2)-to-CO turnover frequency of 997 h^(-1) at -0.9 V vs. RHE with a H_(2)/CO ratio of 1.8. These results d.monstrate that RRd. configuration can be used.as a feasible approach for id.ntifying electrolysis prod.cts from CO_(2)RR.

Application of Connected.Truck d.ta to Evaluate Spatiotemporal Impact of Rest Area Closures on Ramp Parking

Ensuring ad.quate access to truck parking is critical to the safe and.efficient movement of freight traffic. There are strict fed.ral guid.lines for commercial truck d.iver rest period.. Rest areas and.private truck stops are the only places for the trucks to stop legally and.safely. In locations without sufficient parking areas, trucks often park on interstate ramps, which create safety risks for other interstate motorists. Historically, agencies have employed.costly and.time intensive manual counting method., camera surveillance, and.d.iver surveys to assess truck parking. Connected.truck d.ta, available in near real-time, offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck parking patterns and.id.ntify areas where there may be insufficient safe parking spaces. This paper presents a case stud. of interstate I-70 in east central Ind.ana and.d.cuments the observed.spatiotemporal impacts of a rest area closure on truck parking on nearby interstate ramps. Results showed.that there was a 28% increase in parking on ramps d.ring the rest area closure. Analysis also found.that ramps closest to the rest area were most impacted.by the closure, seeing a rise in truck parking sessions as high as 2.7 times. Parking d.ration on the ramps d.ring rest area closure also increased.d.astically. Although it was expected.that this would.result in increased.parking by trucks on ad.acent ramps, this before, d.ring, after scenario provid.d.an id.al scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing parking characteristics of long-haul commercial trucks. The d.ta analytics and.visualization tools presented.in this stud. are scalable nationwid. and.will aid.stakehold.rs in informed.d.ta-d.iven d.cision making when allocating resources toward. improving the nations commercial vehicle parking infrastructure.

The poor corrosion and.wear resistances of mg alloys seriously limit their potential applications in various *** conventional epoxy coating easily forms many intrinsic d.fects d.ring the solid.fication process,which cannot provid. sufficient *** the current stud.,we d.sign a d.uble-layer epoxy composite coating on mg alloy with enhanced.anti-corrosion/wear properties,via the spin-assisted.assembly *** outer layer is functionalized.graphene(FG)in waterborne epoxy resin(WEP)and.the inner layer is Ce-based.conversion(Ce)*** FG sheets can be homogeneously d.spersed.within the epoxy matrix to fill the intrinsic d.fects and.improve the barrier *** Ce film connects the outer layer with the substrate,showing the transition *** corrosion rate of Ce/WEP/FG composite coating is 2131 times lower than that of bare mg alloy,and.the wear rate is d.creased.by~90%.The improved.corrosion resistance is attributed.to the labyrinth effect(hind.ring the penetration of corrosive med.um)and.the obstruction of galvanic coupling *** synergistic effect d.rived.from the FG sheet and.blocking layer exhibits great potential in realizing the improvement of multi-functional integration,which will open up a new avenue for the d.velopment of novel composite protection coatings of mg alloys.
