AIm: To determine the best cut-off value between the early and late recurrence periods after the initial recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).mETHODS: The clinical records of 404 patients who underwent macroscopic curative hepatectomy for HCC between 1980 and 2010 were retrospectively examined. We divided the 252 patients experienced a recurrence of HCC into two groups, the early and late recurrence groups using the "minimum P-value" approach. Factors for early recurrence were investigated using all 404 patients, and factors related to late recurrence were investigated in the patients who were confirmed to be recurrence free at the end of the early recurrence ***: For the 252 patients who experienced a recurrence, the optimal cut-off value for differentiating early and late recurrence based on the overall survival after initial recurrence was 17 mo(5-year overall survival after initial recurrence: 15.4% vs 36.3%, P = 0.000018). Cox proportional hazard analysis identified early recurrence(P = 0.003) as one of the independent prognostic factors associated with overall survival after initial recurrence. A logistic regression model showed that an alpha-fetoprotein level > 100 ng/m L(P multiple HCC(P microvascular invasion(P = 0.012) were independent factors associated with early recurrence, whereas the only independent factor related to late recurrence was liver cirrhosis(P = 0.002).CONCLUSION: Seventeen months after hepatectomy is a useful cut-off value between early and late recurrence of HCC based on the prognosis and different etiologies.

AIm: To evaluate the impact of obesity on the posto- perative outcome after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). mETHODS: Data from 328 consecutive patients with primary HCC and 60 patients with recurrent HCC were studied. We compared the surgical outcomes between the non-obese group (body mass index: BmI m2) and the obese group (BmI ≥ 25 kg/m2). RESULTS: Following curative hepatectomy in patients with primary HCC, the incidence of postoperative complications and the long-term prognosis in the non- obese group (n = 240) were comparable to those in the obese group (n = 88). Among patients with recurrent HCC, the incidence of postoperative complications after repeat hepatectomy was not significantly different between the non-obese group (n = 44) and the obese group (n = 16). However, patients in the obese group showed a significantly poorer long-term prognosis than those in the non-obese group (P may not have an adverse effect on the surgical outcomes of patients with primary HCC. However, greater caution seems to be required when planning a repeat hepatectomy for obese patients with recurrent HCC.

＜正＞Introduction Electroless Cu plating on polymer substrate is the key process in the PWB manufacturing. Pd/Sn catalysts are usually used to initiate the electroless deposition. As a more inexpensive alternative, Ag nanoparticles can be used to start electroless Cu plating[1].In this paper, we show the preparation of Ag-nanoparticle catalyst and the enhancement of their adsoprtion onto the epoxy substrate by predipping into cationic surfactant solutions.

Since organic falls are ephemeral and distributed sporadically, organisms in organic-fall communities must acquire high dispersal ability to migrate from one organic fall to another. However, the dispersal ability of obligate organic-fall organisms has not been investigated thoroughly and the stability of the genetic structure of their communities is unknown. In this study, in order to elucidate the dispersal ability and genetic structure in the organic-fall communities, we carried out population genetic analyses based on sequences of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 in two mytilid mussels.?Adipicola pacifica was obtained from whale and cow bones artificially settled in Japanese waters off Cape Noma (CN) and in the Nansei-Shoto Trench (NS) and Sagami Bay (SB), and Benthomodiolus geikotsucola from natural whale bones in the Torishima Seamount (TS);both species are symbiotic with chemoautotrophic bacteria. Genetic differentiation (Fst) indicated almost no annual change in genetic structure between 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007 collections of A. pacificafrom CN (depth 225 - 229 m), although the 2010 collection had somewhat different genetic structure from the others. Similarly, there was not significant genetic differentiation between 1993 and 2005 collections of *** from TS (depth 4020 m). The Fst and gene bidirectional mean rate of gene flow (Nm) indicated high gene flow and no significant genetic differentiation between A. pacifica specimens collected from CN, NS, and SB. The results suggest that the genetic structure is stable and A. pacifica has high dispersal ability. The mismatch distribution suggests that A. pacificaexpanded their distribution from SB to NS via CN, as expansion time (τ = 2ut) decreased from SB to CN and NS.

Background: A keloid is a specific skin lesion that expands beyond the boundaries of the original injury as it heals. Histologically, it is characterized by the excessive accumulation of collagen. However, the reasons for the expansion and the invasive nature of keloids remain unknown. Objectives: We evaluated collagen degradation and migration by cultured keloid fibroblasts based on the assumption that these variables were of functional relevance to the expanding and invasive nature of keloid lesions. methods: Collagen production was investigated by the detection of type 1 collagen (procollagen type1C peptide: P1P). matrix metalloproteinase (mmP)-1 (interstitial collagenase) and mmP-2 (gelatinase-A),were investigated as elements of the collagen degradation system. Enzyme immunoassays were performed to measure the production of P1P, mmP-1, mmP-2, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TImP)-1. To assess the production of mmP-2 its gelatinolytic activity was measured by zymography using gelatin-containing gels. The participation of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in the production and degradation of collagen was also investigated. Finally, the migratory activity of keloid fibroblasts was evaluated using a colony dispersion assay. Results: The production of type 1 collagen, mmP-1, mmP-2, and TImP-1 by keloid fibroblasts was 3-fold, 6-fold, 2-4-fold, and 2-fold greater than that of normal dermal fibroblasts, respectively. Production of P1P was increased when TGF-β1 was added to cultures of keloid fibroblasts, while it was decreased when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. In contrast, the production of mmP-1 was decreased by the addition of TGF-β1 to cultured keloid fibroblasts, while it was increased when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. The production of mmP-2 increased after treatment with TGF-β1, but did not change significantly when anti-TGF-β1 antibody was added to the cultures. Production of TImP-1 did not change significant

meV-and Sub-meV-photon Sources Based on Compton Backscattering at SPring-8 and KPSI-JAEA

Recently we have constructed two facilities for generating photon beams in the meV and sub-meV energy regions by means of the Compton backscattering with a laser and an electron beam at SPring-8 and at Kansai Photon Science Institute of Japan Atomic Energy Agency(KPSI-JAEA). The meV-photon source at SPring-8 consists of a continuous-wave optically-pumped far infrared laser with a wavelength of 118.8 μm and an 8 GeV stored electron beam. Present meV-photon flux is estimated to be 1.3×103 photons/s. On the other hand,the sub-meV-photon source at KPSI-JAEA consists of a pulse Nd∶YAG laser with a wavelength of 1 064 nm and a 150 meV electron beam accelerated by microtron. In the first trial of the photon production in this source,backscattered photon flux is estimated to be 20 photons/pulse. Both the Compton backscattered photon sources have possibilities to be used for new tools in various fields such as nuclear physics,materials science,and astronomy.

Observation of Cell-Size Variation under Environmental Stress by Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy without Objective Image magnification

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy （FCS） without objective image magnification （without using con-focal microscope） was applied to observe the variation in cell size of Escherichia coli （E. coli） induced by the anti-cancer agent mitomycinC （mmC）. In the system without image magnification followed in this study, the suspension of E. coli cells was stirred, and the difference in movement due to the different cell sizes induced by the compulsive solution flow was detected. The addition of 0.1-0.4 pg/L of mmC elongated the E. coli cell length from about 3.6 to 7.8μm. The flow cell （i.d. = about 1 mm） also produced a size-dependent correlation curve, The present system is not based on single molecular FCS but is inexpensive and effective at observing the variation in cell size induced by environmental changes.

Background: Although an association between benign digestive diseases and smoking or drinking habits was reported, consistent results have not been obtained either in European,American or Japanese populations. methods: Smoking and alcohol habits as risk factors for the incidence of gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis as well as cholelithiasis were examined using the longitudinal data of the Adult Health Study collected biennially between 1958 and 1998. During 1958- 1998, 1,093 gastric ulcers, 437 duodenal ulcers, 2,054 chronic liver diseases and cirrhoses, and 1,136 cholelithiasis cases were newly detected based on medical history, fluoroscopy or endoscopy and ultrasonography. Smoking and drinking histories were obtained from five and three questionnaires, respectively, administered during different periods. The relative risks (RRs) for ever smoked to never smoked and that for ever drank to never drank were estimated after adjustment for city, sex, age, birth cohort, calendar time and radiation dose. Results: The analysis showed a positive association of smoking with gastric ulcer (RR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.71- 2.41), duodenal ulcer (RR: 1.31, 95% CI: 0.99- 1.72), chronic liver disease and cirrhosis (RR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.08- 1.39) and cholelithiasis (RR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.02- 1.40), and a positive association of drinking with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis (RR: 1.10, 95% CI: 0.99- 1.23). Conclusions: The peptic ulcer, chronic liver disease and cholelithiasis incidence increased significantly with smoking, and the chronic liver disease incidence increased significantly with drinking simultaneously in a prospective study of a Japanese population.
