Velocity Component Comparison between CFD and EFD in Taylor Vortex Flow

Since the classical investigation of the Taylor vortex by G. I. Taylor in 1923, many researchers have studied the Taylor vortex as one of the most important vortex types in flow. In this study, the inner cylinder is rotating, while the outer cylinder, which is concentric with the inner cylinder, is stationary. In addition, the measurement of the velocity distribution is carried out by the PIV （Particle Image Velocimetry） method. The radius of the inner cylinder is 20 mm, and that of the outer cylinder is 30 mm. In this study, Re = 650-1,200 is assumed. In the upper part of the apparatus, movable ends are fixed to the upper and lower sides of the cylinder to change the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of cylinder height to gap distance. A servo motor to rotate the inner cylinder, a servo-motor control device, a servo amplifier for rotation speed control, and a YAG laser light source are installed in the apparatus. For the visualization of Taylor vortex flow, aluminum powder composed of scale like fine particles is used. As tracer particles used in the PIV method, fluorescent particles with a size of 48 Ixm were used. The governing equations are Navier-Stokes equations with cylindrical coordinates （r, θ, z） and the equations of continuity. Each physical value is nondimensionalized using the angular velocity of the inner cylinder as the representative velocity, and the radius difference between the inner and outer cylinders as the representative length. Discretization of the governing equations is based on the mAC method. The results of EFD and CFD （computational fluid dynamics） are compared. The mode bifurcation is observed, and the flow structure is investigated.

Pancreatic cancer is a malignancy with an extremely poor prognosis. Chronic pancreatitis is a well-known risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Inflammation is thought to influence carcinogenesis through DNA damage and activation of intracellular signaling pathways. many transcription factors and signaling pathways co-operate to determine and maintain cell identity at each phase of pancreatic organogenesis and cell differentiation. Recent studies have shown that carcinogenesis is promoted through the suppression of transcription factors related to differentiation. Pancreatitis also demonstrates transcriptional changes, suggesting that multifactorial epigenetic changes lead to impaired differentiation. Taken together, these factors may constitute an important framework for pancreatic carcinogenesis. In this review, we discuss the role of inflammation and de-differentiation in the development of pancreatic cancer, as well as the future of novel therapeutic applications.

Small and thin mesa structures of intrinsic Josephson junctions 1- 2μm on a side and 1.5-7.5 nm in thickness are fabricated from single crystals of Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8＋δ with a nominal Pb content x from 0.2 to 0.5. The Josephson critical current density jc is found to be pronouncedly large, ranging from 10 to 50 kA/cm^2. Switching current probability measurements for these mesa samples show an indication of a crossover to the macroscopic quantum tunneling region.

This study is conducted to evaluate the ongoing geoenvironmental impacts of Brahmaputra-Jamuna (BJ) River around the Jamuna Bridge (JB) site which was modified prior to the construction of Jamuna Bridge in 1996. Remote sensing and GIS techniques are adopted to evaluate the temporal and spatial geohazards. This study shows that the intensity of channel shifting has been increased due to regulation of river width at Sira-jganj–Bhuiyapur section from 11 km to 4.8 km. Planform analysis shows that the major channel has been stressed to migrate (315 m/year) eastwards. The phenomena of channel changes are predicted to be the con-sequences of interaction of water flow, sedimentation and channel corridor. The erosion and deposition have complicated variations over time and space due to the abrupt changes of flow and sedimentation around the regulated section. Due to width reduction, the bridge site in the braided system acts as sluice gate which can not accommodate the entire flow to release downstream properly. The helical flow developed with the inter-action of guide bund creates local scours and helps to shift the river bank eastward.

We present a case of fetal liver failure caused by the activation of larnivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus （HBV） nine months after lamivudine treatment. A 57-year old man visited our hospital for the treatment of decornpensated chronic hepatitis B. Lamivudine was started in December 2001. Subsequently, serum HBV was negative for HBV DNA with seroconversion from HBeAg to anti-HBe and improvement of liver function. However, HBV DNA and HBeAg were again detected in September 2002. He was complicated by breakthrough hepatitis and admitted to our hospital in November for severely impaired liver function. Vidarabine treatment was started and serum HBV DNA and alanine aminotransferase （ALT） decreased transiently. However, after the start of m-interferon treatment, HBV DNA level increased and liver function deteriorated. He died 1 mo after admission. An analysis of amino acid sequences in the polymerase region revealed that rtm204I/V with rtLSOI/V occurred at the time of viral breakthrough. After the start of antiviral treatment, rtL180m was detected in addition to rtm204I/V and rtLSOI/V, and became predominant in the terminal stage of the disease. HBV clone with a high replication capacity may be produced by antiviral treatment leading to the worsening of liver function. Antiviral therapy for patients with breakthrough hepatitis in advanced liver disease should be carefully performed.

Preoperative Diagnosis of Thyroglossal Duct Cancer: A Case Report and Literature Review

Objective: To clarify the preoperative diagnostic rate and elucidate the morphological features of thyroglossal duct cancer through a literature search on cases reported in Japan. methods: A search of a medical database (Japan medical Abstracts Society) identified 40 studies on thyroglossal duct cancer in Japanese patients between 1976 and 2014. A total of 47 cases, including the present case, are summarized herein. Patient characteristics, preoperative diagnosis, and morphological features were reviewed and analyzed. morphological features of the internal portions in the cystic lesions were classified using the previously reported Yokosuka Kyosai Hospital criteria for ultrasonography findings of thyroid cystic tumors. Results: Preoperative diagnosis was described for 43 of the 47 cases. malignancy was suspected in 18 (41.9%) of the 43 cases on the basis of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology (presence of suspected papillary carcinoma cells) and imaging studies (presence of calcifications), 12 and 6 cases, respectively. Preoperative FNA was performed in 24 cases with a correct diagnosis obtained in only 12 (50%) cases. morphological features were evaluated by preoperative imaging studies and/or postoperative histopathology. We found 6 cases (15%) with solid lesions, 32 cases (80%) with cystic lesions containing a solid part, and 2 cases (5%) with solo cystic lesions, respectively. Calcification was observed in 28 (72.5%) cases. We further examined the internal morphology of 32 cases with cystic lesions according to the criteria for ultrasonography findings of thyroid cystic tumors described in methods. Of the 32 cases, 25 (62.5%) and 7 (17.5%) were classified as “eccentric acute angle type (Ea)” and “multiseptate type (m)”, respectively. The boundary between the solid part and the cystic part was irregular in all 7 “m” cases. No “eccentric and blunt angle type (Eb)” or “concentric type (C)” lesions were observed. AIm: To clarify the relationship between autophagy and lipotoxicity-induced apoptosis, which is termed "lipoapoptosis," in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. mETHODS: male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet(HFD) for 12 wk, after which the liver histology and expression of proteins such as p62 or LC3 were evaluated. Alpha mouse liver 12(AmL12) cells treated with palmitate(PA) were used as an in vitro model. RESULTS: LC3-Ⅱ, p62, and Run domain Beclin-1 interacting and cysteine-rich containing(Rubicon) proteins increased in both the HFD mice and in AmL12 cells in response to PA treatment. Rubicon expression was decreased upon c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK) inhibition at both the m RNA and the protein level in AmL12 cells. Rubicon knockdown in AmL12 cells with PA decreased the protein levels of both LC3-Ⅱ and p62. Rubicon expression peaked at 4 h of PA treatment in AmL12, and then decreased. Treatment with caspase-9 inhibitor ameliorated the decrease in Rubicon protein expression at 10 h of PA and resulted in enlarged AmL12 cells under PA treatment. The enlargement of AmL12 cells by PA with caspase-9 inhibition was canceled by Rubicon ***: The JNK-Rubicon axis enhanced lipoapoptosis, and caspase-9 inhibition and Rubicon had effects that were cytologically similar to hepatocyte ballooning. As ballooned hepatocytes secrete fibrogenic signals and thus might promote fibrosis in the liver, the inhibition of hepatocyte ballooning might provide antifibrosis in the NASH liver.
