Screening for retinopathy of prematurity:a report from upper Egypt

AIm： To detect the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity （ROP） in a tertiary referral neonatal intensive care unit in upper Egypt and to describe the obstacles faced during implementing the screening protocol for the first time. mETHODS： Consecutive infants were enrolled at birth and screened for ROP. We used the UK ROP guideline （may 2008） for infant selection, follow up and treatment. Repeat examinations were performed until retinal vascularisation was complete. RESULTS： Fifty-two infants were enrolled： 24 males and 28 females. mean gestational age was 31.3wk （±2.8 SD） and mean birth weight was 1234,6 g （±221.1 SD）. Incidence of ROP was 36.5% （stages 1, 2, 3 and 4a were 9.6%, 9.6%, 15.4% and 1.9% respectively）, no stages 4b or 5 were found in this series. Six infants （11.5%） died during screening without ROP, 25 infants （48.1%） were discharged from screening with retinal vascularisation reaching zone III, 5 infants （9.6%） were treated with indirect diode with or without additional cryotherapy and 16 infants （30.8%） were lost to follow up. In this series gestational age rather than birth weight was found significantly correlated and predictive （P〈0.05） with ROP stages. CONCLUSION： ROP in a single site in upper Egypt appears to have comparable incidence to other areas worldwide. The main screening obstacle was missing cases due to the absence of a national ROP screening protocol.

AIm:To evaluate the effect of chronic mild stress(CmS) on the emergence of gastric ulcers and possible modulation by octreotide,a synthetic somatostatin analogue. mETHODS:Adult male Wistar rats were subjected to nine different unpredictable random stress procedures for 21 d,a multifactorial interactional animal model for *** was administered daily for 21 d at two dose levels(50 and 90μg/kg)before exposure to stress ***-and microscopical assessments were made,in addition to quantification of plasma corticosterone and gastric mucosal inflammatory,oxidative stress, and apoptotic biomarkers. RESULTS:Exposure to CmS elevated plasma corticosterone(28.3±0.6μg/dL,P=0.002),an event that was accompanied by gastric lesions(6.4±0.16 mm,P=0.01) and confirmed ***,the insult elevated gastric mucosal lipid peroxides(13±0.5 nmol/g tissue,P=0.001),tumor necrosis factor-α(3008.6±78.18 pg/g tissue,Pmg protein,P=0.002).Conversely,CmS mitigated interleukin-10(627.9±12.82 pg/g tissue,P= 0.001).Furthermore,in animals exposed to CmS,octreotide restored plasma corticosterone(61%and 71%from CmS,P=0.002)at both dose *** beneficial effects were associated with a remarkable suppression of gastric lesions(38%and 9%from CmS,P=0.01)and reversal of derangements in gastric mucosa. CONCLUSION:The current investigation provides evidence that exposure to CmS induces gastric ulceration, which was alleviated by administration of octreotide possibly possessing antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anti-apoptotic actions.

The aim of this study was to test the antimicrobial properties of dental cements modified with magnesium oxide(mgO)***-modified mgO nanoparticles(zmgO)in concentrations(0.0,0.3,0.5,and 1.0%)were mixed with dental cements(Fuji II,Rely X Temp E,Ionoglass Cem,Es Temp NE,and System P link).Eight discs were fabricated from each zmgO-cement pair for a total of 32 specimens for each *** of the dental cements incorporating zmgO was done by X-ray Diffraction(XRD)and Field Emission Scanning Electron microscopy(FESEm).The antimicrobial properties of the mixtures were tested using direct contact and agar diffusion assays against Streptococcus mutans,Staphylococcus aureus,Enterococcus faecalis,and Candida *** was analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and LSD post hoc test at 0.05 significance *** spectra showed sharp peaks of zmgO indicating its high crystalline nature,while the amorphous dental cements with zmgO had broad *** analysis showed a uniform distribution of the zmgO nanoparticles in the *** were significant inhibition zone values associated with all concentrations of zmgO-cement mixtures tested compared to controls(pmgO groups compared to controls for all *** effect was most prominent with Rely X against *** and *** cements containing zmgO showed significant antimicrobial properties that were dependent on the specific initial cement substrate.

Influence of combustion-originated dioxins in atmospheric deposition on water quality of an urban river in Japan

Bulk（wet and dry） deposition samples were collected in Saitama Prefecture, Japan throughout a year（February 8, 2012 to February 7, 2013） to estimate the influence of dioxins emitting from waste incinerators on river water quality. The annual deposition flux of dioxins was 3.3 ng-toxic equivalent（TEQ）/m^2/year. Source identification using indicative congeners estimated that 82% of dioxin TEQ in the bulk deposition（2.7 ng-TEQ/m^2/year）was combustion-originated, indicating that most of the dioxins in the deposition were derived from waste incinerators. In Saitama prefecture the annual flux of combustionoriginated dioxins in depositions was apparently consistent with that of dioxin emission into the air from waste incinerators. The TEQ of combustion-originated dioxins in the deposition per rainfall was 2.4 pg-TEQ/L on annual average, exceeding the environmental quality standard（EQS） for water in Japan of 1 pg-TEQ/L. This suggests there is a possibility that dioxins in atmospheric deposition have a significant influence on the water quality of urban rivers which rainwater directly flows into because of many paved areas in the *** influence of combustion-originated dioxin in the deposition on the water quality of Ayase River, an urban river heavily polluted with dioxins, was estimated at 0.29 pg-TEQ/L on annual average in 2015. It seems that dioxins in atmospheric deposition from waste incinerators have a significant influence on water quality of some urban rivers via rainwater though the dioxins in the ambient air have achieved the EQS for atmosphere at all monitoring sites in Japan.

One of the major aims of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) Physiome Project is to develop multiscale mathematical and computer models that can be used to help understand human health. We present here a small facet of this broad plan that applies to the gastrointestinal system. Specifically, we present an anatomically and physiologically based modelling framework that is capable of simulating normal and pathological electrical activity within the stomach and small intestine. The continuum models used within this framework have been created using anatomical information derived from common medical imaging modalities and data from the Visible Human Project. These models explicitly incorporate the various smooth muscle layers and networks of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) that are known to exist within the walls of the stomach and small bowel. Electrical activity within individual ICCs and smooth muscle cells is simulated using a previously published simplified representation of the cell level electrical activity. This simulated cell level activity is incorporated into a bidomain representation of the tissue, allowing electrical activity of the entire stomach or intestine to be simulated in the anatomically derived models. This electrical modelling framework successfully replicates many of the qualitative features of the slow wave activity within the stomach and intestine and has also been used to investigate activity associated with functional uncoupling of the stomach.

It has long been recognized that plant invasions may alter carbon （C） and nitrogen （N） cycles, but the direction and magnitude of such alterations have been rarely quantified. In this study, we quantified the effects caused by the invasion of a noxious exotic plant, Kalanchoe daigrernontiana （Crassulaceae）, on C and N mineralization and enzymatic and microbial activities in the soil of a semiarid locality in Venezuela. We compared soil parameters associated with these processes （C and N mineralization time and the cumulative values, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity, and activities of dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, glucosaminidase, and urease） between invaded and adjacent non-invaded sites. In addition, correlations among these parameters and the soil physical-chemical properties were also examined to determine if a positive feedback exists between nutrient availability and K. daigremontiana invasion. Overall, our results showed that C mineralization and transformation of organic compounds to NH4^＋ were favored at sites colonized by K. daigrernontiana. With this species, we found the highest cumulative amounts of NH4^＋-N and C and the lowest mineralization time. These results could be explained by higher activities of urease and glueosaminidase in soils under the influence of K. daigremontiana. In addition, higher amounts of organic matter and moisture content in invaded soils might favor C and N mineralization. In conclusion, invasion of Neotropical semiarid zones by K. daigrernontiana may influence the chemical and biological properties of the soils covered by this species, increasing nutrient bioavailability, which, in time, can facilitate the invasion process.

The microclimate surrounding a plant has major effect on its health and photosynthesis process,where certain plants struggle in suboptimal environmental conditions and unbalanced levels of humidity and *** ability to remotely track and correlate the effect of local environmental conditions on the healthy growth of plants can have great impact for increasing survival rate of plants and augmenting agriculture *** necessitates the widespread distribution of lightweight sensory devices on the surface of each *** flexible and biocompatible materials coupled with a smart compact design for a low power and lightweight system,we develop widely deployed,autonomous,and compliant wearables for *** demonstrated wearables integrate temperature,humidity and strain sensors,and can be intimately deployed on the soft surface of any plant to remotely and continuously evaluate optimal growth *** is enabled through simultaneous detection of environmental conditions while quantitatively tracking the growth rate(***).Finally,we establish a nature-inspired origami-assembled 3D-printed“PlantCopter”,used as a launching platform for our plant wearable to enable widespread microclimate monitoring in large fields.
