Soil Physical Properties and Grain Yield Influenced by Cover Crops and Crop Rotation

The crop yield is related to several factors, among these, soil tillage, soil compaction and crop rotation. This study aimed to evaluate the winter cover crops and crop rotation influence on soil physical properties and grain yield of dry beans, maize and soybean for two growing seasons. Three experiments were conducted, corresponding to dry beans, maize and soybean crops. It was used the randomized block design with three treatments and four replications consisted by 3 × 10 m plots. The treatments were: two cover crops systems and crop rotation in no-till, and the control, consisting of winter fallow and conventional tillage. The cover crop dry matter, soil physical properties and grain yield for dry beans, maize and soybean in the two growing seasons were evaluated. Crop rotation systems and cover crops showed a trend to increase maize and soybean yields. Crop rotation in no-till increases soil compaction in the superficial layer compared to conventional tillage, but does not reduce the dry beans, maize and soybean yields.

Background: measures to contain the COVID-19 transmission reached teaching routines of universities worldwide with possible mental health consequences for anxiety. This study assessed prevalence and risk factors for stress, depression, and anxiety (SDA) in medical students during quarantine by COVID-19. methods: A cross-sectional observational study of medical students by means of the DASS-21 questionnaire. Risk factors for SDA were assessed based on epidemiologic questions related to COVID-19. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves were calculated for each predictor, as well as sensitivity and specificity. Results: This survey reached 1009 responses. A prevalence of 77.5% for some SDA disorder was found, 63% being severe. Previous diagnosis of psychiatric disorder was a factor of risk for anxiety (OR 2.78 CI95% 1.44 - 14.25, p = 0.044), as well as for depression (OR 3.37 CI95% 1.98 - 6.02, p Conclusion: Psychiatric conditions as well as chronic illnesses were risk factors for high prevalence of anxiety, depression and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic among medical students.

Objective: To investigate whether a rapid access approach is useful for the ev aluation of patients with symptoms suggestive of a new cardiac arrhythmia. Desig n: Prospective, descriptive study. Setting: Secondary care based rapid access ar rhythmia clinic in West London, UK. Participants: Patients referred by their gen eral practitioner or the emergency department with symptoms suggestive of a new cardiac arrhythmia. main outcome measures: Number of patients with a newly diagn osed significant arrhythmia. Number of patients with diagnosed atrial fibrillati on. Number of eligible, moderate, and high risk patients treated with warfarin. Results: Over a 25 month period 984 referrals were assessed. The mean age was 55 years (range 20-90 years) and 56%were women. The median time from referral to assessment was one day. A significant cardiac arrhythmia was newly diagnosed in 40%of patients referred to the RAAC. The most common arrhythmia was atrial fib rillation, with 203 new cases (21%). Of these, 74%of eligible patients over 65 were treated with warfarin. Other arrhythmias diagnosed were supraventricular tachycardias (127(13%)), conduction disorders (43 (4%)), and non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (21 (2%)). Vasovagal syn cope was diagnosed for 53 patients (5%). The most frequent diagnosis was sympto matic ventricular and supraventricular extrasystoles (355 (36%)). Conclusion: A rapid access arrhythmia clinic is an innovative approach to the diagnosis and m anagement of new cardiac arrhythmias in the community. It provides a rapid diagn osis, stratifies risk, and leads to prompt initiation of effective treatment for this population.
