Aim. Understanding the factors that control biodiversity distributions at different spatial scales has been a key challenge for conservation *** biodiversity,reflected in differences in species com.ositions am.ng sites(beta diversity),can be derived from.species replacem.nt(turnover)and is driven by m.ltiple ***,we sought to tackle this issue through two questions related to threatened Brazilian seasonally dry forests:(i)what is the contribution of species turnover to beta diversity?and(ii)which factors drive variations in species com.ositions am.ng forest patches?m.thods We sam.led tree species and environm.ntal variables(soils and clim.te)in 17 dry forest patches spaced alm.st 300 km.*** used the beta diversity partitioning fram.work to determ.ne the contribution of *** used redundancy analysis,with properly controlled spatial structure,to assess the contributions of the environm.ntal and spatial factors to the variations of the species *** Findings Beta diversity am.ng the patches was m.inly represented by the turnover com.onent(98.2%),with Sim.son dissim.larity superior to other regions of the country(m.ans of 0.89 and 0.71 in m.ltiple site and pairwise m.asures,respectively).The environm.ntal factors m.asured explained m.re than space,representing 30.3%of the variation of the species com.osition,of which 28.1%was nonspatially *** suggest that 300 km.represents a threshold at which edaphic and clim.tic predictors have sim.lar effects in determ.ning com.unity turnover(14.9%and 12.6%,respectively,without spatial structure).Thus,conservation strategies should be considered across landscapes to effectively protect tropical forest diversity,as even considering the different clim.tic aspects covered by the scale,landscaped edaphic varieties are im.ortant drivers of species turnover.

H pylori (CagA) and Epstein-Barr virus infection in gastric carcinom.s:Correlation with p53 m.tation and c-m.c,Bcl-2 and Bax expression

AIm. To investigate the interrelationship between H pylori and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in the gastric carcinogenesis having in focus the p53 m.tation and the c-m.c, Bcl-2 and Bax expression. m.THODS: seventy-one gastric carcinom. tissues were assessed by polym.rase chain reaction (PCR) for H pylori and in situ hybridization for EBV. c-m.c, Bcl-2 and Bax expression were detected by im.unohistochem.stry and single-stranded conform.tional polym.rphism.(SSCP) for p53 m.tation. RESULTS: The positivity rates for H pylori and EBV were 94.4% and 8.45%, respectively. The m.jority of the cases displayed only the H pylori presence. All EBV positive cases were also H pylori positive. None infectious agent was observed in 5.55% of the cases. The intestinal type tum.r was m.re frequent in the co-infected and non-infected groups. The fem.le predom.nated in the non-infected group showing statistical significance (70.4% vs 29.6%, P=0.039). The Bcl-2 was only detected in the group exclusively infected by H pylori. However, c-m.c and Bax were detected in the three groups but with a low frequency in the co-infected group. m.tation of p53 was present in all groups, with the highest frequencies in the H pylori positive groups. CONCLUSION: The frequency of H pylori infection in gastric carcinom.s was high. The presented data indicated that gastric carcinogenesis has different pathways depending of the presence of the two investigated infectious agents, suggesting a possible involvem.nt of H pylori with apoptotic process. The low expression of c-m.c and Bax in the EBV-positive groups suggests that EBV m.y inhibit the expression of these proteins. Nevertheless, p53 m.tation shows to be a relevant alteration, independent of both infectious agents.

3D printed m.llireactors for process intensification

The scope of the present research aim. at dem.nstrating the 3D printing use in the m.nufacturing of m.crochannels for chem.cal process applications. A com.arison am.ng digital m.del processing applications for 3D print(slicers) and a print layer thickness analysis were perform.d. The 3D print fidelity was verified in several devices, including the m.crochannels’ printing with and without m.crom.xer zones. In order to highlight the 3D print potential in Chem.cal Engineering, the biodiesel synthesis was also carried out in a m.llireactor m.nufactured by 3D printing. The m.llireactor operated under lam.nar flow regim. with a total flow rate of 75.25 m.·m.n^-1(increm.nt of about 130 tim.s over traditional m.crodevices used for biodiesel production).The printed m.llireactor provided a m.xim.m.yield of Ethyl Esters of 73.51% at 40 ℃, ethanol:oil m.lar ratio of7 and catalyst concentration of 1.25 wt% and residence tim. about 10 s. As a result of flow rate increm.nt attained in the m.llireactor, the num.er of required units for scaling-up the chem.cal processes is reduced. Using the approach described in the present research, anyone could produce their own m.llireactor for chem.cal process in a sim.le way with the aid of a 3D printer.

Im.obilization devices m.y be a valuable aid to ensure the im.roved effectiveness of radiotherapy treatm.nts where constraining the m.vem.nts of specific anatom.cal segm.nts is crucial. This need is also present in other situations, specifically when the superposition of various m.dical im.ges is required for fine identification and characterization of som. pathologies. Because of their structural characteristics, existing head im.obilization system. m.y be claustrophobic and very uncom.ortable for patients, during both the m.deling and usage stages. Because of this, it is im.ortant to m.nim.ze all the discom.orts related to the m.sk to alleviate patients’ distress and to sim.ltaneously guarantee and m.xim.ze the restraint effectiveness of the m.sk. In the present work, various head im.obilization m.sk m.dels are proposed based on geom.trical inform.tion extracted from.com.uterized tom.graphy im.ges and from.3D laser scanning point clouds. These m.dels also consider the corresponding connection to a radiotherapy table, as this connection is easily altered to accom.odate various m.nufacturers’ solutions. A set of m.terials used in the radiotherapy field is considered to allow the assessm.nt of the stiffness and strength of the m.sks when subm.tted to typical loadings.

Im.obilization of Lipase from.Candida rugosa on m.soporous m.m.41

The use of enzym.tic route for production of biofuels is growing up due the m.ld reaction conditions that this m.thod provides, as well as reducing SOx em.ssion. To reduce costs, it’s necessary to im.obilize the enzym., m.king possible to use it continuously as biocatalyst. The aim.of this work was to m.asure the influence of the m.ss of support and pH used for im.obilization of com.ercial lipase from.Candida rugosa acquired by Sigm. laboratory. The im.obilization m.thod chosen was adsorption on m.soporous and hydrophobic support m.m.41, this has been treated with nitric acid 10% v/v to rem.ve any organic residue. Then, 20 m. of enzym.tic solution in phosphate buffer (pH 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0;50 m.) and 1 g/L was placed under constant stirring with 0.30 and 0.45 g of support. Aliquots were taken from.the reaction m.dium.and analyzed by spectrophotom.try at 10 m.nutes intervals. A volum. of 0.2 m. of supernatant was put with 1.8 m. of substrate p-Nfl at 0.18 g/L, and the absorbance at 410 nm.was analyzed. In four cases there was a sharp reduction of supernatant’s activity at first 10 m.nutes, that ratifies the big affinity of the enzym. for the support and the negative influence of pH about the activity. Using the calibration curve, it was possible to calculate the final activity of each im.obilization batch. This work suggests the occurrence of diffusional effects, which m.ans that the enzym. m.bility was restricted due the excessive am.unt of support, and then, it lost a part of accessibility to substrate, reflecting in not expressive activity values, and changing the state of ionization of the com.onents of the system.

Structural and m.lecular features of intestinal strictures in rats with Crohn's-like disease

AIm. To develop a new rat m.del we wanted to gain a better understanding of stricture form.tion in Crohn’s disease (CD).m.THODS: Chronic colitis was induced locally by the adm.nistration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). The relapsing inflam.ation characteristic to CD was m.m.cked by repeated TNBS treatm.nts. Anim.ls were random.y divided into control, once, twice and three tim.s TNBS-treated groups. Control anim.ls received an enem. of saline. Tissue sam.les were taken from.the strictured colonic segm.nts and also adjacent proxim.lly and distally to its 60, 90 or 120 d after the last TNBS or saline adm.nistrations. The frequency and m.croscopic extent of the strictures were m.asured on digital photographs. The structural features of strictured gut wall were studied by light- and electron m.croscopy. Inflam.ation related alterations in TGF-beta 2 and 3, m.trix m.talloproteinases 9 (m.P9) and TIm.1 m.NA and protein expression were determ.ned by quantitative real-tim. PCR and western blot analysis. The quantitative distribution of caspase 9 was determ.ned by post-em.edding ***: Intestinal strictures first appeared 60 d after TNBS treatm.nts and the frequency of them.increased up to day 120. From.day 90 an intact lam.na epithelialis, reversible thickening of lam.na m.scularis m.cosae and irreversible thickening of the m.scularis externa were dem.nstrated in the strictured colonic segm.nts. Nevertheless the m.rphological signs of apoptosis were frequently seen and excess extracellular m.trix deposition was recorded between sm.oth m.scle cells (Sm.s). Enhanced caspase 9 expression on day 90 in the Sm.s and on day 120 also in m.enteric neurons indicated the induction of apoptosis. The m.NA expression profile of TGF-betas after repeated TNBS doses was characteristic to CD, TGF-beta 2, but not TGF-beta 3 was up-regulated.
