Improving wood volume predictions in dry tropical forest in the semi-arid Brazil

The volumetric variability of dry tropical forests in Brazil and the scarcity of studies on the subject show the need for the development of techniques that make it possible to obtain adequate and accurate wood volume *** this study,we analyzed a database of thinning trees from a forest management plan in the Contendas de SincoráNational Forest,southwestern Bahia State,*** data set included a total of 300 trees with a trunk diameter ranging from 5 to 52 ***,validation and statistical selection of four volumetric models were *** to the difference in height values for the same diameter and the low correlation between both variables,we do not suggest models which only use the diameter at breast height(dBH)variable as a predictor because they accommodate the largest estimation *** comparing the best single entry model(Hohenald-Krenn)with the Spurr model(best fit model),it is noted that the exclusion of height as a predictor causes the values of 136.44 and 0.93 for Akaike information criterion(AIC)and adjusted determination coefficient(R2 adj),which are poorer than the second best model(Schumacher-Hall).Regarding the minimum sample size,errors in estimation(root mean square error(RmSE)and bias)of the best model decrease as the sample size increases,especially when a larger number of trees with dBH≥15.0 cm are randomly *** sampling by diameter class produces smaller volume prediction errors than random sampling,especially when considering all *** summary,the Spurr and Schumacher-Hall models perform *** models suggest that the total variance explained in the estimates is not less than 95%,producing reliable forecasts of the total volume with *** estimates indicate that the bias around the average is not greater than 7%.Our results support the decision to use regression methods to build models and estimate their parameters,seeking stratification strategies in diameter classes for the sample trees.

ESTABLISHmENT ANd PRELImINARY CLINICAL APPLICATION OF RAdIORECEPTOR ASSAY FOR THE dETERmINATION OF INSULIN IN HUmAN SERA

A simple radioreceptor assay (RRA) of insulin has been established by using insulin receptor on human placental membrane (HPm). In this system, 60-70% of bound125I-insulin can be displaced when native insulin (338 mU/ml) is added. This method is suitable for clinical application as shown by its sensitivity, accuracy and precision. Serum insulin concentration of normal adults, patients with diabetes mellitus and other diseases determined both by RRA and radioimmunoassay (ria) tend to be coincident. Experiments showed that RRA as well as ria, may distinguish nondiabetic and diabetic subjects and patients with insulin dependent diabetes meUitus (Iddm) and noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIddm). Fasting sera obtained from 40 normal adults were determined by RRA and ria simultaneously. The concentrations of insulin were 11.25±4.2 μU/ml and 11.19±3.9 μU/ml respectively. The insulin release curves of 9 Iddm patients measured by RRA and ria were consistent. However, the values of insulin release of 7 normal adults and 8 NIddm patients determined by RRA were slightly lower than those determined by ria. Before and after oral administration of nipedipine in 4 cases of coronary heart diseases, insulin release curves, determined by ria did not change significantly, but from those obtained by RRA, one could observe that the release curves of insulin were much lower or the peak value was delayed. These results are consistent with those of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and suggest that RRA may be more specific than ria.

Efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid salts distilled from coconut oil against two enteric pathogen challenges in weanling piglets

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(mCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of mCFA salts(dIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of dIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pd 8 PI(ETEC F4 trial).When analyzing the entire colonic microbiota(16 S rRNA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEC F4 challenge,dIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by dIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by dIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEC F4,the IEL counts were higher with dIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EmT) is defined as switching of polarized epithelial cells to a migratory fibroblastoid phenotype. EmT is known to be involved in the progression and metastasis of various cancers in humans, but this specific process is still little explored in the veterinary literature. The aim of this research was to evaluate the expression of EmT-related proteins in canine mammary carcinomas (CmCs). The expression of six EmT-related proteins in 94 CmCs of female dogs was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using a tissue array method. Additionally, clinicopathological characteristics were compared with the expression of EmT-related proteins. Loss of epithelial protein and/or acquisition of the expression of mesenchymal proteins were observed in CmCs. Loss of epithelial protein and/or acquisition of the expression of mesenchymal proteins were observed, particularly in tumors with evidence of stromal invasion;however, significance was only observed between the S100A4 and vascular invasion. In addition, Snai-1 nuclear immunoexpression was significantly related to E-cadherin loss. In conclusion, loss of epithelial proteins and/or the acquisition of mesenchymal proteins are associated with EmT and may have an important role in the evaluation of CmC patients. The unique immunoexpression pattern of Snai-1 could help to distinguish between an adenoma and a non-metastatic carcinoma and seems to be related to conversion of myoepithelial cells to a complete mesenchymal-like phenotype. Loss of E-cadherin and cytokeratin and change of immunoexpression pattern of Snai-1, N-cadherin, S100A4 and mmP-2 indicate the occurrence of EmT in canine mammary carcinomas and should result in an en bloc resection or a close follow-up.

Analysis of Tracheal Secretion in Healthy Horses Undergoing a Vaquejada Simulation Test

This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of EIPH in vaquejada horses via endoscopy and tracheal lavage and citology. We used eight Quarter-mile horses that usually perform at vaquejadas. Clinical examination was carried out before the race. After the race, endoscopy and tracheal lavage with 20 ml of saline via the service channel of the endoscope were performed. The samples were sent to the laboratory for processing and confection of the slides. Of the eight horses (four pull and four helper horses), six had hemosiderophages in their tracheal aspirates, confirming the existence of pulmonary hemorrhage after exercise. No difference was observed between the analyzed parameters between the two groups of vaquejada horses (P > 0.05). Tracheal lavage and endoscopy can be used for evaluating this important disease in animal athletes.
