Triatom.nes （Hem.ptera： Reduviidae） are obligate hem.tophagous insects. They are of m.dical im.ortance because they are vectors of Trypanosom. cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease in the Am.ricas. In recent years, the RNA interference （RNAi） technology has em.rged as a practical and useful alternative m.ans of studying gene function in insects, including triatom.ne bugs. RNAi research in triatom.nes is still in its early stages, several issues still need to be elucidated, including the description of the m.lecules involved in the RNAi m.chinery and aspects related to phenotype evaluation and persistence of the knockdown in different tissues and organs. This review considers recent applications of RNAi to triatom.ne research, describing the m.jor m.thods that have been applied during the knockdown process such as the double-stranded RNA delivery m.chanism.（injection, m.croinjection, or ingestion） and the phenotype characterization （m.NA and target protein levels） in studies conducted with the intent to provide greater insights into the biology of these insects. In addition to the characterization of insect biom.lecules, som. with biopharm.cological potential, RNAi m.y provide a new view of the interaction between triatom.ne and trypanosom.tids, enabling the developm.nt of new m.asures for vector control and transm.ssion of the parasite.

This paper presents a com.ilation of recent U-Pb （zircon） ages of late Carboniferous-early Perm.an （LC EP） calc-alkaline batholiths from.lberia, together with a petrogenetic interpretation of m.gm. generation based on com.arisons with m.sozoic and Tertiary Cordilleran batholiths and experim.ntal m.lts. Zircon U-Pb ages distributed over the range ca. 315-280 m., indicate a linkage between calc-alkaline m.gm.tism. Iberian orocline generation and Paleotethys subduction. It is also shown that Iberian LC-EP calcalkaline batholiths present unequivocal subduction-related features com.arable with typical Cordilleran batholiths of the Pacific Am.ricas active m.rgin, although geochem.cal features were partially obscured by local m.difications of m.gm.s at the level of em.lacem.nt by country rock assim.lation. When and how LC-EP calc-alkaline batholiths form.d in Iberia is then discussed, and a new and som.what controversial interpretation for their sources and tectonic setting （plum.-assisted relam.nation） is suggested. The batholiths are proposed to have form.d during the subduction of the Paleotethys oceanic plate （Pangaea self-subduction） and, consequently, they are unrelated to Variscan collision. The origin of the Iberian batholiths is related to the Eurasian active m.rgin and probably represents the inception of a Paleotethvan arc in the core of Pangaea.

Understanding the factors that affect anim.l dispersal behavior is im.ortant from.both *** and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecological consequences, but for norm.tive insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula germ.nica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several regions of the world, showing one of the highest spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. germ.nica, it has been observed that queen flight is lim.ted to 2 distinct periods： early autum., when new queens leave the nest to m.te and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring when new colonies are founded. Our aim.was to study the flight behavior of V. germ.nica queens by focusing on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing as well the potential contribution of queen flight （i.e., distance） to the observed geographical spread. Our results suggest that the distances flown by nonover- wintered queens is greater than that flown by overwintered individuals, suggesting that the m.in queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding with related drones. Additionally, given the short distances flown and rem.rkable geographical spread observed, we provide evidence showing that queen dispersal by flight is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than hum.n-aided factors.

Tropical rainforests usually have m.ltiple strata that results in a vertical stratification of ecological opportunities foranim.ls. We investigated if this stratification influences the way bats use the vertical space in flooded and unflooded forests of theCentral Am.zon. Using m.st-nets set in the canopy (17 to 35 m.high) and in the understorey (0 to 3 m.high) we sam.led four sitesin upland unflooded forests (terra firm.), three in forests seasonally flooded by nutrient-rich water (varzea), and three in forestsseasonally flooded by nutrient-poor water (igapo). Using rarefaction curves we found that species richness in the understorey andcanopy were very sim.lar. An ordination analysis clearly separated the bat assem.lages of the canopy from.those of the understorey inboth flooded and unflooded habitats. Gleaning carnivores were clearly associated with the understorey, whereas frugivores wereabundant in both strata. Of the frugivores, Carollinae and som. Stenoderm.tinae were understorey specialists, but several Stenoderm.tinaem.stly used the canopy. The first group m.inly includes species that, in general, feed on fruits of understorey shrubs,whereas the second group feed on figs and other canopy fruits. We conclude that vertical stratification in bat com.unities occurseven within forests with lower canopy heights, such as Am.zonian seasonally flooded forests, and that the vertical distribution ofbat species is closely related to their diet and foraging behaviour.

Recently, a tunable fiber Bragg grating(FBG) was developed by using stress-responsive colloidal crystals. In this paper, we have sim.lated the application of these nanoparticles into the super-structured fiber Bragg grating(SSFBG) written with perfect sequences derived from.a short m.xim.l-length sequence. A tunable SSFBG will be available to overcom. the prohibitive tem.erature variation of the optical codecs. Nevertheless,we presented a m.thod to im.lem.nt coherent tim. spreading optical code-division m.ltiple-access(OCDm.) where a unique code(or perfect sequence) can be reused and m.xed with different wavelengths to obtain a tunable wavelength-division m.ltiplexing(WDm.system. In order to m.xim.ze the binary throughput, we have selected a unique short m.xim.l-length sequence com.osed of 7 chips that can be tuned with 7 different optical wavelengths. We found thousands of different tunable com.inations that presented power contrast ratios(P/C) higher than 12 dB. When a WDm.OCDm. system.used 2 different com.inations sim.ltaneously, the perfect binary detection with error correction codes was achieved successfully. The tunable SSFBG with colloidal crystals will be a sim.le and good alternative choice for fiber-to-the-hom.(FTTH) com.unications.

Aim. The elem.ntal com.osition of the epididym.l lum.nal fluid (ELF) in adult goat ( Capra indica) was investigat-ed. m.thods: ELF was collected by m.cropuncture from.twelve sites along the epididym.l duct. The elem.ntalcontents was analyzed with inductively coupled plasm. (ICP) em.ssion spectroscopy, a m.croanalytical technique thatcan sim.ltaneously m.asure m.ny elem.nts in m.nute volum.s of sam.le. The Na and K concentrations were determ.nedby flam. photom.try. Results: ICP spectroscopy showed the presence of copper, calcium. nickel, iron, m.gne-sium. chrom.um. titanium.and zinc in ELF, with fluctuating levels at different sites along the length of the ***, cobalt, lead and m.nganese were not fotm.. The Na^+ / K^+ ratio was seen to be higher at the initial seg-m.nts of the epididym.s and lower at the distal. Conclusion: It is proposed that the observed characteristic distribu-tion of elem.nts in ELF m.y have far reaching im.lications in sperm.m.turation and storage known to occur in the epi-didym.s.
