Aims Habitat loss and fragmentation are the main threats to biodiversity in tropical *** such as shaded cocoa plantations(ScP)provide refuge for tropical forest ***,it is poorly known whether the interspecific ecological interactions are also maintained in these transformed *** evaluated the diversity,reproductive status and photosynthetic metabolism(cAm or c3)of the epiphytic orchid community,and their interactions with host trees(phorophytes)in ScP compared to tropical rainforest(TrF).methods In southeastern mexico,three sites each in TrF and ScP were studied,with four 400 m2 plots established at each site to record all orchids and their *** determined the reproductive(adult)or non-reproductive(juvenile)status of each orchid individual in relation to the presence or absence,respectively,of flowers/fruits(or remnants),and assigned the photosynthetic pathway of each orchid species based in *** used true diversity and ecological networks approaches to analyze orchid diversity and orchid–phorophyte interactions,*** Findings In total,607 individuals belonging to 47 orchid species were *** diversity was higher in TrF(19 effective species)than in ScP(11 effective species)and only seven species were shared between the two *** orchid species were m.re frequent in ScP(53%)than in TrF(14%).At the community level the proportion of non-reproductive and reproductive orchid species and the nested structure and specialization level of the TrF orchid–phorophyte network were maintained in ***,only a subset of TrF epiphytic orchids remains in ScP,highlighting the importance of protecting *** this difference,shaded agroecosystems such as ScP can maintain some of the diversity and functions of natural forests,since the ScP epiphytic orchid community,mainly composed of cAm species,and its phorophytes constitute a nested interaction network,which would confer robustness to d

In the present study,an analysis of the heat and mass transfer in a ventilated cavity in a warm climate zone was carried out to analyze,among others,the temperatures and percentage of relative humidity(rH).The governing equations of the mathematical model were solved through the finite volume *** used the k-εturbulence mode to find the results of the variables of interest in seven climate records on a given *** velocity of the inlet flow of the air-H2O mixture was varied through the reynolds number(re)from 500 to *** outdoor weather conditions considered were solar radiation,ambient temperature,and *** was found that at low velocities,flow recirculation was formed inside the cavity which increased the temperature and concentration of *** re=5000 the flow is predominantly forced,which tends to set the values of temperature and rH as 20°c and 20%*** values of the rH increase in the afternoon hours when the solar radiation decreases to the value of ***,the mass transfer through the values of Sh is maintained with similar values in the seven weather *** was concluded that when air conditioning supplies air at speeds higher than 0.26 m/s at low temperatures it produces cooling with low rH,this causes discomfort,illness and/or discomfort to the users.

Post-myocardial infarction(mI),the left ventricle(LV)undergoes a series of events collectively referred to as *** a result,damaged myocardium is replaced with fibrotic tissue consequently leading to contractile dysfunction and ultimately heart *** remodeling post-mI includes inflammatory,fibrotic,and neovascularization responses that involve regulated cell recruitment and *** cells(Scs)have been transplanted post-mI for treatment of LV remodeling and shown to im.rove LV function by reduction in scar tissue formation in humans and animal models of *** promising results obtained from the application of Scs post-mI have sparked a massive effort to identify the optimal Sc for regeneration of cardiomyocytes and the paradigm for clinical *** Sc transplantations are generally associated with new tissue formation,Scs also secrete cytokines,chemokines and growth factors that robustly regulate cell behavior in a paracrine fashion during the remodeling *** this review,the different types of Scs used for cardiomyogenesis,m.rkers of differentiation,paracrine factor secretion,and strategies for cell recruitment and delivery are addressed.

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper *** devices are based on thin films of WS_(2),Te,and BP(P-type semiconductors)and TiS_(3)and TiS_(2)(N-type semiconductors),deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against *** thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum Seebeck coefficients of(+1.32±0.27)mV K^(-1)and(-0.82±0.15)mV K^(-1)for WS_(2)and TiS_(3),***,Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P-and N-type films with graphite electrodes.A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K^(-1)was obtained when the Peltier element were constructed with three *** findings of this work show proof-of-concept devices to illustrate the potential application of semiconducting van der Waals materials in future thermoelectric power generation as well as temperature sensing for low-cost disposable electronic devices.

Subclinical cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus: To screen or not to screen

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2Dm) has risen in recent decades, and cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in this population. Several clinical trials have demonstrated the benefit of tight control of risk factors on the incidence and m.rtality of cardiovascular disease. However, in clinical practice, few patients achieve the therapeutic goals. The current diagnostic procedures for subclinical cardiovascular disease in T2 Dm patients have not been shown to im.rove prognosis or m.rtality, probably because they do not categorize cardiovascular risk. Thus, clinical practice guidelines do not systematically recommend screening for subclinical atherosclerosis in these patients, although it is known that patients with extracoronary atherosclerosis, microangiopathy and poorlycontrolled cardiovascular risk factors are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Im.rovements in the reliability of diagnostic tests, with fewer side effects and better cost efficiency, may better help to stratify cardiovascular risk in this group of patients, and further evaluation on this topic should be considered.

SP100 is an antiviral protein that restricts the productive stage of human papillomavirus(HPV)and multiple other viruses,and viruses in turn block sUmO-1-mediated stabilization of SP100 and promotes its degradation(Table S1).Interferon(IFN)signaling could still produce m.re SP100 through transcription to counteract viruses.1 Viruses also disable the transcriptional up-regulation of SP100 to achieve persistent infection in hosts.

metabolic diseases are highly prevalent worldwide and have been associated with adverse clinical outcomes,including m.rtality,in patients developing coronavirus disease(cOVID-19).Because of the close relationship between metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity and the presence of metabolicassociated fatty liver disease(mAFLD),a high number of cases of patients affected by both mAFLD and cOVID-19 would be expected,especially in highrisk *** studies have shown an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes,viral shedding,and deep vein thrombosis,especially in patients with mAFLD-related liver *** predisposition to poor outcomes and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in patients with mAFLD could be secondary to mechanisms common to both,including preexisting systemic chronic inflammation,endothelial dysfunction,and involvement of the renin-angiotensin *** of the increased risk of adverse outcomes,mAFLD should be screened in all patients admitted for *** computed tomography scans could be of help,assessment of liver fibrosis is also recommended,favoring noninvasive methods to limit the exposure of healthcare *** involvement in this population ranges from abnormalities in liver chemistry to hepatic steatosis in postm.rtem ***,preventive measures should be strongly advocated in patients already known to have mAFLD,including the use of telemedicine and vaccination in addition to general measures.

Purification and characterization of a thermostable glutamate dehydrogenase from a thermophilic microorganism from Deception Island, Antarctica

Glutamate dehydrogenase （GDH） catalyzes the oxidative deamination of glutamate to a-ketoglutarate and ammonium ions. currently the determination of ammonium and glutamate is carried out using a bovine GDH enzyme, which lacks optimal thermostability for long term storage at room temperature. From samples of Deception Island, Antarctica, we obtained the thermophilic bacteria PID 15 belonging to the Bacillus genera with high GDH specific activity. This new enzyme exhibited NAD＋ dependent activity and no activity was observed when NADP＋ was used. This enzyme shows a specific activity of 4.7 ***-1 for the oxidative deamination reaction and 15.4 U·mg-1 for the reduction of a-ketoglutarate. This enzyme has an optimum temperature of 65℃ and pH of 8.5 for the oxidative deamination. For the reduction of a-ketoglutarate, the optimum temperature is 60℃, with a pH of 8.0. One of the most important characteristics of this enzyme is its ability to retain m.re than 60% of its activity when it is incubated for 8 h at 65℃. The enzyme is also able to retain full activity when it is incubated for 48 d at 4℃ and over 80% of its activity when it is incubated at 25℃. characterization of its kinetics suggests that it prim.rily catalyzes the formation of α-ketoglutarate. This enzyme has an important biological role in the catabolism of glutamate and may have some interesting biotechnological applications based on its thermostable properties.

Fermented chile pepper mash （capsicum annuum cv. mesilla cayenne） is a major industrial food product in New mexico. The fermentation of chile pepper mash depends on temperature, acidity, salt concentration, dissolved air, available carbohydrates and enzymes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of calcium chloride （cacI2） on the microbial characteristics of the pepper mash fermentation. Nine five gallon buckets were prepared with pepper that had been washed and ground by the manufacturer, each with 15% sodium chloride added. The buckets were allotted randomly to 1 of 3 treatments. The treatments included no cacl2, 0.2% cacl2 and 0.4% cacl2 added to the pepper mash. Samples were stored at room temperature and sampled over a 3 months period to examine changes in the microflora. chile mash samples were serially diluted in butterfield＇s phosphate buffer for microbial enum.ration. Aerobic plate counts were conducted by pour plating with an overlay. Petrifilms were used for E. coil/coliform counts and Enterobacteriaceae. Yeasts and molds were surface plated on rose Bengal chloramphenicol agar while streptococci and lactobacilli were plated onto m17 and acidified mrS respectively. Aerobic plate counts, coliforms, E. coli, Enterobacteriaceae, yeast, mold, lactobacilli, and streptococci were not affected by cacl2 level. The addition of 0.4% cacl2 was found to have no effect on the chile pepper mash fermentation.
