Facts and Perceptions Regarding Software measurement in Education and in Practice: Preliminary Results

How is software measurement addressed in undergraduate and graduate programs in universities? Do organizations consider that the graduating students they hire have an adequate knowledge of software measurement? To answer these and related questions, a survey was administered to participants who attended the IWSm-mENSURA 2010 conference in Stuttgart, Germany. Forty-seven of the 69 conference participants (including software development practitioners, software measurement consultants, university professors, and graduate students) took part in the survey. The results indicate that software measurement topics are: 1) covered mostly at the graduate level and not at the undergraduate level, and 2) not mandatory. Graduate students and professors consider that, of the measurement topics covered in university curricula, specific topics, such as measures for the requirements phase, and measurement techniques and tools, receive more attention in the academic context. A common observation of the practitioners who participated in the survey was that students hired as new employees bring limited software measurement-related knowledge to their organizations. Discussion of the findings and directions for future research are presented.

In addition to liver injury, elevation of aminotransferases can be caused by strenuous exercise and use of muscle-building and weight-loss supplements. The purpose of this review is to discuss the various mechanisms of elevation of aminotrans-ferases related to body building. A literature review was performed on clinical trials and case reports involving exer-cise or supplement use and their effects on aminotrans-ferases. Normal aminotransferase levels varied according to gender, age, body mass index, and comorbidities. Strenuous exercise and weight lifting, especially in the unaccustomed, can cause elevated aminotransferases in the absence of liver damage. Supplements such as anabolic steroids, ephedra, and LipoKinetix, amongst others, have also been associated with aminotransferase elevations. The pattern of elevation of aminotransferases is not helpful in distinguishing liver from muscle injury. Other associated muscle enzymes can be useful in making that distinction. To prevent aminotransfer-ase elevations, subjects not accustomed to moderate-high intensity workouts, are recommended to undertake gradual increase in intensity. When causes of liver injury have been ruled out, investigation into bodybuilding, extreme exercise, and supplement use is warranted.

Aminotransferases are commonly found to be elevated in patients with celiac disease in association with two different types of liver dysfunction:cryptogenic liver disorders and autoimmune *** purpose of this review is to discuss the mechanisms by which aminotransferases become elevated in celiac disease,clinical manifestations,and response to gluten-free *** studies have shown that celiac patients with cryptogenic liver disease have normalization in aminotransferases,intestinal histologic improvement and serologic resolution after 6–12 months of strict gluten-free *** patients with an underlying autoimmune liver disease,simultaneous treatment for both conditions resulted in normalized elevated *** literature suggests that intestinal permeability may be at least one of the mechanisms by which liver damage *** with celiac disease should have liver enzymes routinely checked and treated with a strict gluten-free diet if found to be *** of improvement in patients who have strictly adhered to gluten-free diet should prompt further workup for other causes of liver disease.

Dubin Johnson syndrome usually appears in the second dec-ade of life, making differentiation from biliary atresia (BA) relatively easy. However, there are rare cases of neonatal Dubin Johnson syndrome (nDJS) causing cholestasis in neo-nates that can be easily mistaken for other conditions, in-cluding BA. It is important to make a distinction between the two in neonates because nDJS is typically a benign condition and BA, if left untreated, has a high mortality rate.

Objective: Each year 45 million surgical procedures are performed in the United States, and a significant number of these are performed on hypothyroid patients. Little guidance is available to determine the postoperative risk to these subjects. We hypothesized that new surgical techniques and modern anesthesia would lead to no differences in outcome between hypothyroid patients and euthyroid controls. methods: We queried surgical databases in our health system for patients who underwent an operative procedure between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015 with a TSH > 10 mcU/mL or a FT4 Results: We identified 29 hypothyroid patients. The LOS was significantly longer for the hypothyroid patients compared to the predicted LOS (14.4 vs 6.7 days, P Conclusions: In contrast to our initial hypothesis, hypothyroidism is associated with a 2-fold longer LOS following surgery. Hypothyroidism continues to place patients at increased surgical risk.

Bladder cancer is a common disease that is often detected late and has a high rate of recurrence and progression. The current standard of care for the primary detection and follow-up of NmIBC consists of urethro-cystoscopy associated with cytology. However, several clinical risk factors have been claimed to predict recurrence and progression, these factors have a predictive value on a population basis, but no parameter has been found that reliably predicts how an individual patient’s tumor will behave. In the last years many markers have been described in order to decrease the number of cystoscopies and try to provide individualized risk-stratified decision-making. We have focused our review in tumor markers for primary diagnosis, surveillance of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and predicting progression to muscle-invasive disease. After our review, we can conclude that to the date no non-invasive biomarker has proven to be sensitive and specific enough to replace cystoscopy, neither in the diagnosis nor in the follow-up. On the other hand, promising results have been reported of potential biomarkers for predicting recurrence, early progression and poor response to BCG, new studies should be promoted to validate these results and make possible to incorporate markers as a new tool in clinical guidelines.
