UV RADIATION INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYmERIZATION OF ALLYL ACETATE ONTO POLY(ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE)(PET) FILmS FOR FUEL CELL mEmBRANES

Ultraviolet （UV）-induced graft copolymerization of allyl acetate （AA） monomer onto poly（ethylene terephthalate）（PET） films and the subsequent sulfonation on the monomer units in the grafting chain using chlorosulfonic acid （C1SO3H） were carried out to prepare proton exchange membranes （PEms） for fuel cells. A maximum grafting value of 12.8% was found for 35 vol% allyl acetate after 3 h radiation time. Optimum concentration of C1SO3H was selected for the sulfonation reaction to be 0.05 mol/L based on the degree of sulfonation and the tensile strength studies of the membrane. The degree of sulfonation increased as the sulfonation reaction temperature and sulfonation time were increasing. The radiation grafting and the sulfonation have been confirmed by titrimetric and gravimetric analyses as well as FTIR spectroscopy. The maximum ion exchange capacity （IEC） of 0.04125 mmol g-1 was found at 12.1% degree of sulfonation and the maximum proton conductivity was found to be 0.035 S cm-1 at 30℃ and a relative humidity of 60%. The various physical and chemical properties of the PEms such as water uptake, mechanical strength, thermal durability and oxidative stability were also studied. To investigate the suitability of the prepared membrane for fuel cell applications, its properties were compared with those ofNafion 117.

On chip chiral and plasmonic hybrid dimer or tetramer:Generic way to reverse longitudinal and lateral optical binding forces

For both the longitudinal binding force and the lateral binding force,a generic way of controlling the mutual attraction and repulsion(usually referred to as reversal of optical binding force)between chiral and plasmonic hybrid dimers or tetramers has not been reported so *** this paper,by using a simple plane wave and an onchip configuration,we propose a possible generic way to control the binding force for such hybrid objects in both the near-field region and the far-field *** also investigate different inter-particle distances while varying the wavelengths of light for each inter-particle distance throughout the *** of all,for the case of longitudinal binding force,we find that chiral-plasmonic hybrid dimer pairs do not exhibit any reversal of optical binding force in the near-field region nor in the far-field region when the wavelength of light is varied in an air ***,when the same hybrid system of nanoparticles is placed over a plasmonic substrate,a possible chip,it is possible to achieve a reversal of the longitudinal optical binding ***,for the case of lateral optical binding force,we investigate a setup where we place the chiral and plasmonic tetramers on a plasmonic substrate by using two chiral nanoparticles and two plasmonic nanoparticles,with the setup illuminated by a circularly polarized plane *** applying the left-handed and the right-handed circular polarization state of light,we also observe the near-field and the far-field reversal of lateral optical binding force for both *** far as we know,so far,no work has been reported in the literature on the generic way of reversing the longitudinal optical binding force and the lateral optical binding force of such hybrid *** a generic way of controlling optical binding forces can have important applications in different fields of science and technology in the near future.

Wind energy has been identified as the second dominating source in the world renewable energy generation after *** and distribution of wind energy has brought technology revolution by developing the advanced wind energy conversion system(WECS)including multilevel inverters(mLIs).The conventional rectifier produces ripples in their output waveforms while the mLI suffers from voltage balancing issues across the DC-link *** paper proposes a simplified proportional integral(PI)-based space vector pulse width modulation(SVPWm)to minimize the output waveform ripples,resolve the voltage balancing issue and produce better-quality output *** experiences various types of faults particularly in the DC-link capacitor and switching devices of the power *** faults,if not detected and rectified at an early stage,may lead to catastrophic failures to the WECS and continuity of the power *** paper proposes a new algorithm embedded in the proposed PI-based SVPWm controller to identify the fault location in the power converter in real *** most wind power plants are located in remote areas or offshore,WECS condition monitoring needs to be developed over the internet of things(IoT)to ensure system *** this paper,an industrial IoT algorithm with an associated hardware prototype is proposed to monitor the condition of WECS in the real-time environment.

Ion-Acoustic Rogue Waves in multi-ion Plasmas

The basic properties of nonlinear ion-acoustic(IA) waves(IAWs), particularly finite amplitude IA rogue waves(IARWs) in a plasma medium(containing pair ions, iso-thermal positrons, and non-thermal electrons) are theoretically investigated by deriving the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation(NLSE).The criteria for the modulational instability of IAWs, and the basic features of finite amplitude IARWs are *** modulationally stable and unstable regions are determined by the sign of the ratio of the dispersive coefficient to the nonlinear coefficient of *** latter is analyzed to obtain the region for the existence of the IARWs, which corresponds to the unstable *** shape of the profile of the rogue waves depends on the non-thermal parameter α and the ratio of electron temperature to positron *** is found that the increase in the value of the non-thermal parameter enhances both the amplitude and width of IARWs, and that the enhancement of electron(positron) temperature reduces(enhances) the amplitude and width of *** is worth to mention that our present investigation may be useful for understanding the salient features of IARWs in space(viz., upper region of Titan’s atmosphere, cometary comae, and Earth’s ionosphere, etc.)and laboratory(viz., plasma processing reactor and neutral beam sources, etc.) plasmas.

Deposition behavior and tribological properties of diamond-like carbon coatings on stainless steels via chemical vapor deposition

A systematic investigation was carried out to observe the deposition rate of a diamond-like carbon(DLC) coating on two stainless steel substrates by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). The objective of this research is to study the deposition behavior of the DLC coating and its tribological properties in different combinations of methane(CH_4) and nitrogen, which were used as precursor gases. The results reveal that the deposition rate increases with increasing CH_4 content up to 50 vol%. The hardness of the DLC-deposited layer also increases while the friction coefficient decreases with increasing CH_4 gas content up to 50% in the precursor gas mixture.

Investigation of Linear Tetra-Atomic Negative Ion by Photodetached-Electron Spectra

Photodetachment spectra from a linear tetra-atomic negative ion is investigated by treating the detached-electron wave function quantum mechanically.A plane polarized laser light,perpendicular to the axis of the ion,is used to detach the electron from the *** expressions for the electron flux and total photodetachment cross section are *** electron flux on screen shows strong-energy-dependent oscillations with different *** total cross section of the tetra-atomic negative ion reduces the cross section of mono-atomic,diatomic and triatomic negative ions for high energy photons,while for low energy photons it becomes four times the cross section of mono-atomic negative ions.

Influence of surface treatments on fatigue life of a two-stroke free piston linear engine component using random loading

This paper describes the finite element (FE) analysis technique to predict fatigue life using the narrow band frequency response approach. The life prediction results are useful for improving the component design methodology at the very early development stage. The approach is found to be suitable for a periodic loading but requires very large time records to accurately describe random loading processes. This paper is aimed at investigating the effects of surface treatments on the fatigue life of the free piston linear engine’s components. Finite element modelling and frequency response analysis were conducted using computer aided design and finite element analysis commercial codes, respectively. In addition, the fatigue life prediction was carried out using finite element based fatigue analysis commercial code. Narrow band approach was specially applied to predict the fatigue life of the free piston linear engine cylinder block. Significant variation was observed between the surface treatments and untreated cylinder block of free piston engine. The obtained results indicated that nitrided treatment yielded the longest life. This approach can determine premature products failure phenomena, and therefore can reduce time to market, improve product reliability and customer confidence.

Size-manipulation,compaction and electrical properties of barium manganite nanorods synthesized via the CHm method

A composite-hydroxide mediated method was employed to synthesize barium manganite ***,surface smoothness and uniformity of these nanorods were optimized by varying reaction temperature and reaction *** rods with an average diameter of 200 nm and length of1–1.5 μm were obtained at optimum conditions of 200 1C/48 *** dielectric study of these rods reveals that they have higher value of dielectric constant at lower frequencies which was attributed to the interfacial and rotational type ***,the increase in dielectric constant with temperature was attributed to the thermal activation of such ***,the analysis of ln(J) vs.E1/2characteristics in the temperature range of 300–400 K shows that possible operative conduction mechanism was of Poole–Frenkel *** value of βexp was found to be 4.85 times greater than the expected theoretical value of feld lowering coeffcient with an internal feld enhancement factor ofα2 *** high value of βexp may be due to some localized electric felds existing inside the sample.

Predictive car-following scheme for improving traffic flows on urban road networks

Driving behavior is one of the main reasons that causes bottleneck on the freeway or restricts the capacity of signalized *** paper proposes a car-following scheme in a model predictive control(mPC)framework to improve the traffic flow behavior,particularly in stopping and speeding up of individual vehicles in dense urban traffic under a connected vehicle(CV)*** information received through vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V)communication,the scheme predicts the future states of the preceding vehicle and computes the control input by solving a constrained optimization problem considering a finite future *** objective function is to minimize the weighted costs due to speed deviation,control input,and unsafe *** scheme shares the planned driving information with the following vehicles so that they can make better cooperative driving *** proposed car-following scheme is simulated in a typical driving scenario with multiple vehicles in dense traffic that has to stop at red signals in multiple *** speeding up or queue clearing and stopping characteristics of the traffic using the proposed scheme is compared with the existing car-following scheme through numerical simulation.
