The impact of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), child-turcotte-pugh (CTP) score and disease staging on the survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients: a retrospective cohort from single oncology center

Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common cause of cancer-related death in Saudi Arabia. Our study aimed to investigate the patterns of HCC and the effect of TNm staging, Alfa-fetoprotein (AFP), and Child-Turcotte Pugh (CTP) on patients' overall survival (OS).methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted on 43 HCC patients at a single oncology center in Saudi Arabia from 2015 to 2020. All patients had to fulfill one of the following criteria: (a) a liver lesion reported as definitive HCC on dynamic imaging and/or (b) a biopsy-confirmed diagnosis.Results:The mean patient age of all HCC cases was 66.8 with a male-to-female ratio of 3.3:1. All patients were stratified into two groups: viral HCC (n = 22, 51%) and non-viral HCC (n = 21, 49%). Among viral-HCC patients, 55% were due to HBV and 45% due to HCV. Cirrhosis was diagnosed in 79% of cases. Age and sex did not significantly statistically differ in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients (-value > 0.05). About 65% of patients had tumor size >5 cm during the diagnosis, with a significant statistical difference in OS (-value = 0.027). AFP was >400 ng/ml in 45% of the patients. There was a statistically significant difference in the OS in terms of AFP levels (-value = 0.021). A statistically significant difference was also observed between the CTP score and OS (-value = 0.02). CTP class B had the longest survival. BSC was the most common treatment provided to HCC patients followed by sorafenib therapy. There was a significant statistical difference in OS among viral and non-viral HCC patients (-value = 0.008).Conclusions:The most common predictors for OS were the underlying cause of HCC, AFP, and tumor size. Being having non-viral etiology, a tumor size >5 cm, an AFP > 400 ng/mL, and a CTP score class C were all negatively associated with OS.

Analytical approximation of heat and mass transfer in mHD non-Newtonian nanofluid flow over a stretching sheet with convective surface boundary conditions

The paper provides an analytical investigation, homotopy analysis method （HAm）, of the heat and mass transfer for magnetohydrodynamic Oldroyd-B nanofluid flow over a stretching sheet in the presence of convective boundary condition. The PDE governing equations, which consist of equations of continuity, momentum, energy and nanoparti- cles, are converted to ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. The current HAm solution demonstrates very good correlation with those of the pre- viously published studies in the special cases. The influences of different flow physical parameters such as the Deborah numbers in terms of relaxation and retardation times （/3i, /32）, magnetic parameter （m）, Prandtl number （Pr）, Brownian motion parameter （Nb）, thermophoresis parameter （Nt）, Lewis number （Le）, and Biot number （Bi） on he fluid velocity component （f＇（η））, temperature distribution （θ（η）） and concentration φ（η）） as well as the local Nusselt number （Nux/Rex ） and the local Sherwood number （Shx/Re1/2 ） are discussed in detail.

There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease after *** that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopaminergic ***,mice received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the striatum to establish an animal model of nigrostriatal *** weeks after lesion,animals were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 *** this period,the animals had access to a running wheel,which they could use or *** acid treatment,voluntary exercise,or the combination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apomorphine-induction test or(iii)the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars ***,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive terminals and induced a rise in dopamine concentrations in the lesioned *** to docosahexaenoic acid treatment or exercise alone,the combination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)improved forelimb balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopamine ratio and(iii)led to increased dopamine transporter levels in the lesioned *** present results suggest that the combination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid may act synergistically in the striatum of mice with a unilateral lesion of the dopaminergic system and provide support for clinical trials combining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

A Novel Approach for Energy and Water Conservation by Using Silver-Carbon Quantum Dots Hybrid Nanofluids in Wet Cooling Towers Systems

This study presents the use of Silver-Carbon Quantum Dots(Ag-CQD)hybrid nanofluids,prepared by a facile wet chemical method,for heat transfer enhancement of wet cooling towers *** samples were characterized using different analyses,including FT-IR,XRD and *** synthesizing the CQD,it was hybridized with silver nanoparticles and dispersed in water,using ultrasonic *** viscosity and density of the prepared nanofluid were investigated as a function of temperature and nanoparticles concentration,which demonstrated that there were no noticeable changes at lower particles ***,thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer coefficient were measured to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement of the *** 45℃ and 0.5 wt%,the most significant thermal conductivity improvement compared to the base fluid was 24%;and 28%enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient was obtained at Reynolds number of *** nanofluid performance was evaluated in a wet cooling tower for investigating the efficiency and water consumption *** results indicated that the efficiency of the cooling tower,by applying Ag-CQD nanofluid,enhanced from 23.72%to 28.23%;consequently,the amount of the consumed water decreased from 80.76 mL·min^(−1)to 69.67 mL·min^(−1).The results proved that the prepared nanofluid is a successful and promising candidate to enhance heat transfer.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(mSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving mSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of mSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement mSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.

Synthesis of vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite biochar via a novel developed functionalization method to recover phosphate as a potential fertilizer substitute

The effectiveness of phosphate(P)removal from aqueous solutions was investigated by novel low-cost biochars synthesized from vinasse and functionalized with calcined *** vinasse-derived biochar,synthesized via pyrolysis at different temperatures,showed easy preparation and a large surface *** novel vinasse biochar nanocomposites were prepared by adding dolomite to the vinasse biochars with different weight percentages(10,20 and 30%).The characteristics of the prepared materials were identified for further understanding of the inherent adsorption mechanism between P ions and vinasse ***-dolomite nanocomposite was very effective in the adsorption of P species from aqueous *** effect of the operational factors on Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite was explored by applying response surface methodology(RSm).According to RSm results,the optimum condition was achieved to be contact time 90(min),250(mg/L)of P concentration and pH *** isotherm and kinetic studies were applied on experimental data to understand the adsorption *** Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite revealed preferential P species adsorption in the presence of co-existing *** P species could be recovered by 1.0 mHC 1 where the efficiency was not affected up to the fifth *** P-loaded Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite was successfully tested on a plant;it significantly improved its growth and proved its potency as a P-based fertilizer substitute.
