Utilization of RNA sequencing to investigate olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps:A pilot study

Objectives:Prior research on olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS)has focused on patients with polyps and suggests that direct inflammation of the olfactory cleft mucosa plays a contributory *** purpose of this study was to evaluate gene expression in superior turbinate mucosal specimens,comparing normosmic and dysosmic CRS patients without polyps(CRSsNP).methods:Tissue samples were obtained from the superior turbinates of patients with CRSsNP at the time of endoscopic sinus *** subsequently underwent RNA sequencing and functional analysis to investigate biological pathways associated with differentially expressed genes between dysosmic(n=7)and normosmic(n=4)***:Differential gene expression analysis comparing dysosmic and normosmic CRSsNP patients showed upregulation of 563 genes and downregulation of 327 *** stringent criteria for multiple comparisons,one upregulated gene(Immediate Early Response 3[IER3])had an false discovery rate(FDR)correction adjustedP value considered statistically significant(Pme functional analysis revealed eight biological pathways significantly different between dysosmic and normosmic patients(Pmation regarding biological pathways and genes involved in olfactory *** study supports literature suggesting that Type 2 inflammation may play a role in olfactory dysfunction in at least some patients with *** study also prompts questions regarding the role of IL-10,rhodopsin-like receptors,andIER3 in the pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction.

Trigeminal-specific stimulants have been shown to activate different receptors preferentially and this likely accounts for variation in sensory *** is unclear whether trigeminal sensitivity is similar across different transient receptor potential(TRP)receptors or if dysfunction of different receptors results in differing patient ***,a prospective cohort study was conducted,consisting of trigeminal lateralization testing with three different stimulants(eucalyptol,isothiocyanate,acetic acid),olfaction testing with Sniffin'Sticks,and measurement of various patient‐reported outcome measures(PROms).A total of 50 participants were enrolled across the olfactory *** TDI score was 27.1±8.3(range 7.0–39.5)with 38%normosmic and 62%*** trigeminal lateralization scores out of 20 in the overall cohort were 16.18(2.78)for eucalyptol,14.94(3.49)for mustard oil,and 15.28(3.68)for *** showed a significant correlation with threshold scores of Sniffin'Sticks.A significant correlation was found between acetic acid and various *** of the lateralization scores of the trigeminal stimulants correlated to each other significantly and there was no correlation to *** lack of correlation suggests that the measured sensitivity of one type of TRP receptor may not translate to similar sensitivity of the other *** investigations with TRPV1 and TRPA1 agonists are needed to corroborate our findings.

The SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks highlighted the need for effective,reliable,fast,easy-to-do and cheap diagnostics *** pragmatically experienced that an early positive-case detection,inevitably coupled with a mass vaccination campaign,is a milestone to control the COVID-19 *** nanoparticles(AuNPs)can indeed play a crucial role in this context,as their physicochemical,optics and electronics properties are being extensively used in photothermal therapy(PTT),radiation therapy(RT),drug delivery and *** can be synthesized by several approaches to obtain different sizes and shapes that can be easily functionalized with many kinds of molecules such as antibodies,proteins,probes,and *** addition,AuNPs showed high biocompatibility making them useful tool in medicine *** thus reviewed here the most relevant evidence on AuNPs as effective way to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 *** trust future diagnostic efforts must take this‘old-fashioned’nanotechnology tool into consideration for the development and commercialization of reliable and feasible detection kits.

Hatching asynchrony in birds is considered an adaptation to facilitate brood reduction because under conditions of food scarcity, the smallest nestling usually dies soon after hatching, thereby minimizing parental effort. However, in species with extreme hatching asynchrony, the last hatchlings paradoxically experience a very low probability of survival and death can take so long that it can hardly be considered an adaptation. Here, we propose and experimentally tested a new adaptive hypothesis explaining the brood reduction paradox, namely the“male manipulation Hypothesis”. Our hypothesis suggests that by inducing asynchronous hatching,females increase the feeding requirements of the brood, which will induce males to increase provisioning effort. In addition, females may extend the period of male manipulation by feeding the smallest nestling just enough to sustain life. Our study showed that male common blackbirds(Turdus merula) increased their effort(i.e., number of food items per hour) in experimental asynchronous broods compared to synchronous broods, while females reduced their contribution, as predicted by the hypothesis.

In this paper, we prove the following result. Let ξ be a saturated formation and ∑ a Hall system of a soluble group G. Let X be a w-solid set of maximal subgroups of G such that ∑ reduces into each element of X. Consider in G the following three subgroups： the ξ-normalizer D of G associated with ∑; the X-prefrattini subgroup W = W（G, X） of G; and a hypercentrally embedded subgroup T of G. Then the lattice ζ（T, W, D） generated by T, D and W is a distributive lattice of pairwise permutable subgroups of G with the cover and avoidance property. This result remains true for the lattice ,ζ（V, W, D）, where V is a subgroup of G whose Sylow subgroups are also Sylow subgroups of hypercentrally embedded subgroups of G such that ∑ reduces into V.

Ovarian Cysts in Users of Two Kinds of Progestin-only Contraceptives Implants

Objective To evaluate the prevalence of functional ovarian cysts in users of two different types of contraceptive implants. methods A total of 239 women were enrolled at 3 months of use of the etonogestrelreleasing implant （Implanon） and the levonorgestrel-releasing implant （Jadelle）. Bimanual pelvic examination and vaginal ultrasound were performed during routine 3, 6 and 12-month visits of asymptomatic women（control group）. Women with ovarian cysts （or enlarged ovarian follicles 〉25 mm）（cysts group） were assessed weekly until disappearence or reduction of the image （including estradiol （E2） and progesterone measurement and women with no ovarian enlargement underwent same evaluation for the same period of time. Results Ovarian cysts were detected in 5.1% and 13.0% of users of Implanon and Jadelle, respectively, at 3rd month. At the 6th month of use, prevalences were 7.1% and 7.8%, and at 12th month rates were 25.7% and 14.7% in the two groups, respectively. E2 levels were significantly higher in cysts group than in control group. The time until disappearance of the ovarian cyst was similar in Implanon and Jadelle group. There were more cases of menorrhagia in patients rveth ovarian cysts than in patients with no ovarian enlargement. Conclusions The finding of ovarian cysts or enlarged ovarian follicles during the first year of use of Implanon and Jadelle implants is common and transient and should not be interpreted as a pathologic ovarian cyst. No further medical interventions are necessary.

Influence of Surface Finishing on High-Temperature Oxidation of AISI Type 444 Ferritic Stainless Steel Used in SOFC Stacks

This research is focused on the study of the samples, approximatively 15 × 30 mm^2 sized, that were mechanically cut from two sheets （0.4 and 0.2 mm thick, respectively） of AIS1444 Type ferritic stainless steel （FSS）（DIN 1.4521, Eu designation X2CrmoTil8-2）; this material was in the ＇as-rolled＇ state. Part of these specimens were treated superficially on one side using abrasive SiC papers with different average grit sizes （i.e., 46.2, 30.2, 18.3 gm） and diamond suspension （up to 1 tim） in order to obtain various surface roughness. Both the ＇as-rolled＇ and superficially treated samples were then aged in a muffle fumace in static air according to a thermal cycle corresponding to the curing phase of an experimental glass used as sealing in the solid oxide fuel cell stacks. After aging, the chemical compositions and mor- phological peculiarities of the scale formed depending on the thickness of the samples and their surface state were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, bright field light optical microscopy. The obtained results show that all scales formed consist of an inner Cr2O3 subscale and an outer （mn,Cr）3O4 spinel layer; the relationship between FSS grain size and scale microstructural features is consistent on the samples with mirror-like surface only; the scale thicknesses on SiC grinded samples are comparable; the scales covering the ＇as-rolled＇ surfaces are morphologically similar to those grown on the surfaces finished with the 30.2 and 18.3 μm SiC papers, and their thicknesses show an intermediate situation between the abraded and the mirror-like specimens. The last described characteristics depend mainly on the surface and microstructural peculiarities resulting from the rolling process.
