The endophenotype concept was initially proposed to enhance the power of genetic studies of com..ex disorders. It is closely related to the genetic com..nent in a liability-threshold m..el; a perfect endophenotype should have a correlation of 1 with the genetic com..nent of the liability to disease. In reality, a putative endophenotype is unlikely to be a perfect representation of the genetic com..nent of disease liability. The m..nitude of the correlation between a putative endophenotype and the genetic com..nent of disease liability can be estim..ed by fitting m..tivariate genetic m..els to twin data. A num..r of statistical m..hods have been developed for incorporating endophenotypes in genetic linkage and association analyses with the aim..f im..oving statistical power. The m..t recent of such m..hods can handle m..tiple endophenotypes sim..taneously for the greatest increase in power. In addition to increasing statistical power, endophenotype research plays an im..rtant role in helping to understand the m..hanism..which connect the associated genetic variants with disease occurrence. Novel statistical approaches m.. be required for the analysis of the com..ex relationships between endophenotypes at different levels and how they converge to cause the occurrence of disease.

Despite the advent of relatively reliable m..alities of diagnosing diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN),such as nerve conduction studies,there is still a knowledge gap about the pathophysiology,and thus lim..ed available in-terventions for sym..om..ontrol and curtailing disease *** pharm..cologic aspect of m..agem..t is m..nly centred on pain control,however,there are several im..rtant aspects of DPN such as loss of vibration sense,pressure sense,and proprioception which are associated with risks to lower lim..health,which pharm..otherapy does not ***,published evidence suggests non-pharm..ologic interventions such as glycaem.. control through dietary m..ification and exercise need to be com..ned with other m..sures such as psychotherapy,to reach a desired,however m..est *** is em..ging as an im..rtant treatm..t m..ality for several chronic m..ical conditions including neuropathic and other pain *** their study published in the World Journal of Diabetes on the potential of acupuncture to reduce DPN sym..om..and enhance nerve conduction param..ers,Hoerder et al have been able to dem..strate that acupuncture im..oves sensory function and that this effect is likely sustained two m..ths after treatm..t *** previous studies also support these findings,larger m..ti-center random..ed control trials including a sham..ontrolled arm..ccounting for a placebo effect are ***,given the satisfactory safety profile and the positive results found in these studies,it is likely that acupuncture m.. becom..an im..rtant aspect of the repertoire of effective DPN m..agem..t.

Results The research carried out in Hong Kong covers etiology, natural behavior, treatm..t and prognosis of NPC. These studies not only elucidated the different aspects of NPC, m..y of these new findings will also guide future directions of research. Objectives To produce an enzym..linked im..nosorbant assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against Epstein Barr virus (EBV) specified nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA 1) and the 18kD EBV m..rix protein, and to determ..e and optim..e its sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinom..(NPC).m..hods We used a com..nation of highly purified glutathione transferase fusion proteins of the 40kD carboxy dom..n of EBNA1 and the 18kD EBV m..rix protein for coating ELISA plates. In three separate studies, we tested for IgA antibodies in serum..pecim..s from..8 EBV seronegative donors, 284 EBV seropositive donors and 160 newly diagnosed NPC patients. By com..ring the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis obtained for different cutoff values, we derived several quantitative param..ers to evaluate assay perform..ce, establish objective diagnostic criteria which optim..e the intrinsic diagnostic capability of the assay and assess the significance of individual test results, respectively. Optim.. cutoff optical density (OD) is defined as the cutoff OD where sensitivity of the assay equals its specificity, and resolution of the assay is indicated by the value of sensitivity (or specificity) determ..ed at the optim.. cutoff OD.
