Three experim.nts were conducted to evaluate direct-fed m.crobial (DFm./strong>) supplem.ntation on live perform.nce, carcass characteristics, and fecal shedding of m.E. colim. in feedlot steers. In Exp. 1, 400 steers (BW = 348 kg) were assigned to treatm.nts: CON = lactose carrier only, BOV =m. P. freudenreichii m.(NP24) +m. L. acidophilusm. (NP51), BOVD = m.P. freudenreichiim. (NP24) +m. L. acidophilusm. (NP51), and COm. = BOV fed for the first 101 d on feed, followed by BOVD for the final 28 d prior to harvest. In Exp. 2 (n = 1800;BW = 354 kg) and Exp. 3 (n = 112;BW = 397 kg), steers were utilized in a random.zed com.lete block design and assigned to DFm.treatm.nts using low dose and high dose, respectively. Fecal sam.les were collected prior to harvest and analyzed for m.E. colim. serogroups. In Exp. 1, DFm.reduced (P m. E. colim. O157. Prevalence of O157 was reduced by BOVD supplem.ntation in Exp. 2 and 3 (P m.E. colim. O157 in positive sam.les was reduced in both experim.nts where enum.ration was perform.d (P ≤ 0.02). Weighted m.an differences across the three experim.nts were equal to a 33% reduction in the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in BOVD treated cattle. A significant reduction in prevalence of O26, O45, O103, and O121 was observed in Exp. 2 (P ≤ 0.03). These results indicate that high levels of m.L. acidophilusm. (NP51) m.y represent an effective pre-harvest food safety intervention to reduce fecal shedding of several m.E. colim. serogroups.

The cratonisation of Western Australia during the Proterozoic overlapped with several key events in the evolution of Earth. These include global oxidation events and glaciations, as well as the assem.ly,accretionary growth, and breakup of the supercontinents Colum.ia and Rodinia, culm.nating in the assem.ly of Gondwana. Globally, Proterozoic m.neral system. evolved in response to the coupled evolution of the atm.sphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. Consequently, m.neral deposits form.preferentially in certain tim.s, but they also require a favourable tectonic setting. For Western Australia a distinct plate-m.rgin m.neralisation trend is associated with Colum.ia, whereas an intraplate m.neralisation trend is associated with Rodinia and Gondwana, each with associated deposit types. We com.are the current Proterozoic record of ore deposits in Western Australia to the estim.ted likelihood of oredeposit form.tion. Overall likelihood is estim.ted with a sim.le m.trix-based approach that considers two com.onents: The "global secular likelihood" and the "tectonic setting likelihood". This com.arative study shows that at least for the studied ore-deposit types, deposits within Western Australia developed at tim.s, and in tectonic settings com.atible with global databases. Nevertheless, several deposit types are either absent or poorly-represented relative to the overall likelihood m.dels. Insufficient exploration m.y partly explain this, but a genuine lack of deposits is also suggested for som. deposit types. This m.y relate either to system.c inadequacies that inhibited ore-deposit form.tion, or to poor preservation. The system.tic understanding on the record of Western Australia helps to understand m.neralisation processes within Western Australia and its past connections in Colum.ia, Rodinia and Gondwana and aids to identify regions of high exploration potential.

Zinc(Zn) deficiency in paddy soils is often a problem.for rice *** can decrease m.tal availability in som. noncalcareous soils through different m.chanism. associated with soil redox *** experim.nts were perform.d in order to better understand the processes that governed the dynam.cs of Zn in non-calcareous paddy soils at varying redox potentials(Eh).Airdried non-calcareous soil sam.les collected from.four different paddy field sites in the Philippines were subm.rged and incubated in a reaction cell with continuous stirring and nitrogen purging for 4 weeks,and then purged with com.ressed air for another week to reoxidize the *** Eh of the four soils started at 120 to 300 m.,decreased to —220 to —300 m. after 100 to 250 h of reduction,and was m.intained at this low plateau for about 2 weeks before increasing again upon *** solubility showed contrasting patterns in the four soils,with two of the soils showing a decrease in soluble Zn as the Eh becam. low,probably due to zinc sulfide(ZnS) *** contrast,the other two soils showed that Zn solubility was m.intained during the reduced phase which could be due to the com.etition with iron(Fe) for precipitation with *** in the relative am.unts of S,Fe,and m.nganese(m.) oxides in the four soils apparently influenced the pattern of Zn solubility after flooding.

Sm.king is the m.st com.on cause of prem.-ture cardiovascular disease in wom.n, but con-tem.orary data is lacking. We sought to inves-tigate the differences between fem.le sm.kers and nonsm.kers in the US. m.thods: Using a registry of alm.st 19,000 wom.n who attended free public heart screenings sponsored by Sis-ter to Sister between 2008 and 2009 in 17 large US cities, we com.ared the m.ans for lipid val-ues, cardiom.tabolic m.asures, and differences in sociodem.graphic inform.tion between sm.k-ers and nonsm.kers. Secondary outcom.s were age and race-adjusted odds for obesity, the m.tabolic syndrom., hypertension, a non-HDL > 160 m./dl, and a serum.glucose ≥ 126 m./dl between sm.king and nonsm.king wom.n. Results: The final sam.le included 18,892 wom.n (49.8 ± 14.3 years, 37% black, and 32% white, 14% Hispanic), with 1,216 (6.4%) current sm.kers. Sm.kers were younger than non-sm.kers (45.6 ± 13.0 vs 50.1 ± 14.4 years, p 160 m./dl (OR 1.19;1.01 - 1.39). Insurance and incom. data showed a sig-nificant inverse relationship between sm.king prevalence and increasing household incom.. Conclusions: In this richly diverse sam.le of wom.n, fem.le sm.kers were younger and of lower socioeconom.c status than nonsm.kers with significant differences in cardiom.tabolic risk factors.
