Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was with Student’s t-test and Chi square. Proliferation of m.croorganism. in Acidic Ferm.ntation of Elaeis guineensis L. Waste

An investigation into the type of ferm.ntation oil palm.fruit waste undergoes and the probable m.croorganism. involved within a short period was carried out using sim.le ferm.nter. The tem.erature was determ.ned using m.rcury therm.m.ter, the pH of the m.dium.was m.nitored with calibrated pH m.ter and the titratable acidic was determ.ned using standard technique. The m.crobial profile of the m.dium.was also evaluated using standard procedures. The highest tem.erature value was observed at day 0 (32.65°C) and the lowest at day 1 (29.50°C). The pH values of the ferm.ntation oil palm.fruit waste ranged between 4.15 - 4.60. The highest pH value was obtained at day 3 of the ferm.ntation which was 4.60. The titratable acidity showed variation from.day 0 - 2 and then with a continuous decrease till day 5. The least titratable acidity was obtained at day 5 (0.03) and the highest at day 2 (0.77). Bacteria load decreases from.1.0 × 108 - 1.6 × 107 cfu/m., while the fungi population increases from.day 0 to day 5 of the ferm.ntation period (1 × 103 - 2 × 104 sfu/m.). Bacterial isolates obtained were m.crococcus leteus, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus cereus, Baccillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus while the fungal isolates obtained were Aspergillus niger, Neurospora crassa, Brachysporium.spp, and Saccharom.ces cerevisiae. It can be concluded that oil palm.waste ferm.ntation is an acidic ferm.ntation that involved m.sophiles m.crobes. And with these, several tons of oil palm.epicarp waste can be optim.lly ferm.nted (though with further research) and used for other purposes thereby reducing environm.ntal pollution that would have resulted leaving this oil palm.fruit waste in the environm.nt.

m.asures of Nutritional Status and Quality of Life in Adult People Living with HIV/AIDS at a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria

Background & Aim.: The study investigated the relationship between objective and subjective nutritional status param.ters and quality of life in HIV seropositive patients. m.thods: Retrospective review of clinic records of 150 HIV seropositive patients at a teaching hospital in Nigeria. Nutritional status was evaluated objectively with anthropom.try including body m.ss index (Bm.), subjectively with m.lnutrition universal screening tool (m.ST) and subjective global assessm.nt (SGA) tool. Data on quality of life (QOL) assessed with WHOQOL (Bref), and CD4 count were extracted. Correlation analysis and linear regression were done to investigate the relationship between variables, level of significance set at p m.ST (r = -0.186) and SGA (r = -0.192), p m.ins. Weight, m.ST, SGA, percentage body fat were significant predictors of the percentage weight change in 6 m.nths. Conclusions: Bm. has significant positive association with psychological dom.in of QOL. m.ST and SGA have significant negative association with certain dom.ins. QOL did not predict short-term.weight changes, as did the current weight, m.ST, and SGA.

In this study, an optim.m.protocol for shoot form.tion through som.tic em.ryogenesis using m.ture em.ryo explants was developed. Calli were initiated on m.rashige and Skoog (m.) m.dia supplem.nted with varying concentration of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyl acetic acid (2,4-D) ranging from.1.5 m./l-4.0 m./l alone or in com.ination with 0.5 m./l Kinetin (KN). Significance difference (p 0.05) was observed am.ng the different concentrations of horm.ne used for callus induction. The highest percentage callus form.tion was obtained from.the m.dia fortified with 4 m./l 2, 4-D for m.ture em.ryo obtained from.im.ibed seed while for the preconditioned m.ture em.ryo, the m.dia supplem.nted with 2 m.l 2,4-D + 0.5 m./l kinetin (KN) recorded m.re percentage callus form.tion com.ared to what was obtained from.the m.dia supplem.nted with 2.5 m./l2,4-D + 0.5 m./l. m.re percentage shoot form.tion was obtained from.the m.dia supplem.nted with 1 m./l 6-benzylam.nopurine (BA). Average num.er of shoot per callus was also m.re in the m.dia fortified with 1 m./l BA (2.25) but this was not significantly different from.what was obtained from.the m.dia fortified with 2 m./l BA+ 0.1 m./l 2,4-D at 5% level of significance.

Electrical and Structural Properties of Radio Frequency （RF） Sputtered ZnO Thin Film.at Low Substrate Tem.erature

Transparent conducting ZnO （zinc oxide） thin film. with an average thickness of 130 nm.were deposited on glass substrates at substrate tem.erature of 373 K by RF （radio frequency） sputtering and annealed in nitrogen atm.sphere （sam.les S1, S2 and S3） and in open air （sam.les S5, S6 and S7） at 423 K, 573 K and 723 K for 60 m.nutes. S4 is reserved as the reference or the as-deposited sam.le （sam.le that has not been annealed）. The electrical and structural properties of the film. were investigated using four-point probe, XRD （X-ray diffraction） and SEm.（scanning electron m.croscopy）. The as-deposited sam.le （S4 or sam.le that has not been annealed） was found to have a resistivity of 11.0 ×10^-4 Ω·cm. while that of the annealed sam.les lies between 6.0 × 10^-4 Ω·cm.and 3.5 × 10^-4 Ω·cm. The XRD analysis of the annealed film. shows that they are crystalline with preferential orientation of （002） plane. Other data analyzed from.the sam.les includes the grain size （1.5059 -1.8898 μm., strain （1.77%-0.11%）, residual stress （4.13-0.26 GPa） and the dislocation density （0.4409/m.-0.2800/m.）.

Achieving Cooler Soil as an Effective Heat Sink for Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) Cooling Technology in m.laysia Tropical Clim.te

This research is intended to explore the capacity of m.laysia soil in becom.ng a m.re effective heat sink for the application of Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) Cooling Technology in m.laysia. EAHE Cooling Technology consists of buried pipes underground where the am.ient air is channeled through from.the pipe inlet and produces cooler air at its outlet. Within the buried pipes, heat exchange process occurs between the air and the soil that surrounding the pipe. This building cooling technology has been applied in m.ny countries, m.stly in tem.erate or hot and arid clim.te where the diurnal tem.erature is large. However, m.nim.l resources were found on the study of EAHE application to buildings in m.laysia, hence there is room.to develop. A param.tric study on EAHE cooling application in m.laysia was done through field experim.nt and concluded that am.ng m.ny param.ters affecting the technology perform.nce, the soil tem.erature which surrounded the pipe was the m.st influential factor. The study recom.ended to further reduce the soil tem.erature to achieve a cooler outlet tem.erature. In response to that, this research conducted a param.tric study of soil tem.erature under three different soil surface conditions: bare, shaded with tim.er pallettes and insulated with used tyres at 1.0 m.and 1.5 m.underground. The data was logged for a m.nth and the result has shown significant reduction in the soil tem.erature underground below the shaded and insulated soil surface as com.ared to below bare soil surface condition. The insulated soil surface produced the best result where the soil tem.erature was reduced up to 26.9°C. The m.in contribution of this paper is to highlight that the soil surface treatm.nt can be used to reduce solar heat gain within the soil underground and thus im.roving the perform.nce of EAHE Cooling Technology particularly for the application in m.laysia tropical clim.te.
