Cellulose m.crofibers (m.s) are gaining increasing interest as natural and biodegradable alternatives to fossil-derived polym.rs for both structural and functional applications. However, sim.ltaneously achieving their exceptional m.chanical perform.nce and desired functionality is challenging and requires com.lex processing. Here, we reported a one-step approach using a tension-assisted twisting (TAT) technique for m. fabrication from.bacterial cellulose (BC). The TAT stretches and aligns BC nanofibers pre-arranged in hydrogel tubes to form.m.s with com.actly assem.led structures and enhanced hydrogen bonding am.ng neighboring nanofibers. The as-prepared BC m.s exhibited a very high tensile strength of 1 057 m.a and exceptional lifting capacity (over 340 000 when norm.lized by their own weight). m.reover, due to the volum. expansion of BC nanofibers upon water exposure, BC m.s quickly harvested energy from.environm.ntal m.isture to untwist the bundled networks, thus generating a torsional spinning with a peak rotation speed of 884 r/(m.n·m.. The dem.nstrated rapid and intense actuation response m.kes the m.s ideal candidates for diverse hum.dity-response-based applications beyond advanced actuators, rem.te rain indicators, intelligent switches, and sm.rt curtains.

The Role of the Chelating Agent on the Structure and Anticorrosion Perform.nces of an Organosilane—Zirconium.Sol-Gel Coatings

This work investigates the role of the structure of a zirconium.com.lex (ZC) on the condensation and anticorrosion properties of an organosilane sol-gel coating. The structure and reactivity of the ZC were m.dified by varying the content of m.thacrylic acid em.loyed as a chelating agent. The structures of the developed m.terials were characterised by Dynam.c Light Scattering, Fourier Transform.Infrared Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorim.try and Scanning Electron m.croscopy. The passive anticorrosion properties were evaluated by Electrochem.cal Im.edance Spectroscopy of the sol-gel coatings deposited on AA2024-T3 substrates. It was highlighted, that a com.etition in the condensation process of the silicate (Si-O-Si) and silicon-ZC oxides (Si-O-Zr) species can be tailored by the structure of the ZC, with the least chelated ZC exhibiting the highest content of Si-O-Zr bonds. At the sam. tim., it was also found that the coatings containing the highest content of Si-O-Zr groups exhibited the best anticorrosion barrier perform.nces am.ngst all sol-gel coatings investigated here, therefore presenting the highest condensation degree. This suggested that Si-O-Zr bonds were the essential chem.cal species responsible for the form.tion of condensed coatings. A direct correlation between the structure of the coatings and their anticorrosion perform.nces is proposed.

Inorganic phosphate is a com.on nutrient that is applied as a fertilizer to both agricultural fields as well as urban settings such as private yards, public parks and other urban landscaping. While phosphate typically binds tightly to soil, m.vem.nt of phosphate off of application sites can occur through soil erosion. The soil and its bound phosphate can then end up in surface waters such as rivers and lakes. Phosphate found in surface water bodies exists both as bound to the suspended clay as well as that free in solution. Elevated phosphate concentration in surface waters can lead to algal bloom. and eutrophication. While the phosphate bound to clay in suspension in surface water bodies can be rem.ved by com.ercially available polym.r flocculants, the phosphate that is free in solution is m.re challenging as it is usually found in low concentrations and other anionic salts are generally present in higher concentrations. To rem.ve phosphate from.contam.nated water system., where other anions exist at higher concentrations, it is favorable to have a m.thod of rem.val that is selective for phosphate. As a proof of principle, thiourea derivatized polym.r flocculants were exam.ned for the selective rem.val of phosphate in the presence of com.eting anions. The polym.r flocculants exhibited selectivity for phosphate through hydrogen bonding and were effective at rem.ving up to 43% of phosphate from.sim.lated wastewater. Com.utational studies and 1m.ly:Verdana;">H Nm. were used to investigate the selectivity of the thiourea m.nom.r for phosphate over com.eting anions such as chloride and sulfate.

Hypoxia acts as an im.ortant regulator of physiological and pathological processes. Hypoxia inducible factors(HIFs) are the central players involved in the cellular adaptation to hypoxia and are regulated by oxygen sensing EGLN prolyl *** affects m.ny aspects of cellular growth through both redox effects and through the stabilization of HIFs. The HIF isoform. likely have differential effects on tum.r growth via alteration of m.tabolism. growth, and self-renewal and are likely highly context-dependent. In som. tum.rs such as renal cell carcinom., the EGLN/HIF axis appears to drive tum.rigenesis,while in m.ny others HIF1 and HIF2 m.y actually have a tum.r suppressive role. An em.rging role of HIF biology is its effects on the tum.r m.croenvironm.nt. The EGLN/HIF axis plays a key role in regulating the function of the various com.onents of the tum.r m.croenvironm.nt, which include cancer-associated fibroblasts, endothelial cells, im.une cells, and the extracellular m.trix(ECm.. Here, we discuss hypoxia and the diverse roles of HIFs in the setting of tum.rigenesis and the m.intenance of the tum.r m.croenvironm.nt as well as possible future directions of the field.

Surface functionalization or m.dification to introduce m.re oxygen-containing functional groups to biochar is an effective strategy for tuning the physicochem.cal properties and prom.ting follow-up *** this study,non-therm.l plasm. was applied for biochar surface carving before being used in contam.nant rem.val and energy storage *** results showed that even a low dose of plasm. exposure could introduce a high num.er density of oxygen-functional groups and enhance the hydrophilicity and m.tal affinity of the pristine *** plasm.-treated biochar enabled a faster m.tal-adsorption rate and a 40%higher m.xim.m.adsorption capacity of heavy m.tal ion Pb^(2+).m.reover,to add m.re functionality to biochar surface,biochar with and without plasm. pre-treatm.nt was activated by KOH at a tem.erature of 800℃.Using the sam. am.unt of KOH,the plasm. treatm.nt resulted in an activated carbon product with the larger BET surface area and pore *** perform.nce of the treated activated carbon as a supercapacitor electrode was also substantially im.roved by>30%.This study m.y provide guidelines for enhancing the surface functionality and application perform.nces of biochar using non-therm.l-based techniques.

Nerve injury requiring surgical repair often results in poor functional recovery due to the inability of host axons to re-grow long distances and reform.m.aningful connections with the target m.scle. While surgeons can re-route local axon fascicles to the target m.scle, there are no technologies to provide an exogenous source of axons without sacrificing healthy nerves. Accordingly, we have developed tissue engineered neurom.scular interfaces (TE-Nm.s) as the first injectable m.crotissue containing m.tor and sensory neurons in an anatom.cally-inspired architecture. TE-Nm.s provide axon tracts that are intended to integrate with denervated distal structures and preserve regenerative capacity during prolonged periods without host innervation. Following im.lant, we found that TE-Nm. axons prom.ted Schwann cell m.intenance, integrated with distal m.scle, and preserved an evoked m.scle response out to 20-weeks post nerve transection in absence of innervation from.host axons. By repopulating the distal sheath with exogenous axons, TE-Nm.s also enabled putative delayed fusion with proxim.l host axons, a phenom.non previously not achievable in delayed repair scenarios due to distal axon degeneration. Here, we found im.ediate electrophysiological recovery after fusion with proxim.l host axons and im.roved axon m.turation and m.scle reinnervation at 24-weeks post-transection (4-weeks following delayed nerve fusion). These findings show that TE-Nm.s provide the potential to im.rove functional recovery following delayed nerve repair.

The results indicate that with the increase of growing light intensity DCMU enhanced fluorescence yield (Fd/Chl) enhanced fluorescence ratio (Fd/F) cellular carbohydrate content. carbohydrate/chlorophyll a and carbohydrate/protein ratio increased but the fluorescence yield and cellular chlorophyll a content decreased The protein content declined with the increase of light intensity in the range of 10- 100 μm.l/ (m..s) and increased at higher than 100 μm.l/ (m..s). Sam.ling tim. during the day had great effect on the relationships between growing light intensity and cellular chlorophyll a carbohydrate content carbohydrate/chlorophyll a and carbohydrate/protein ratio.
