The Virtue of Open-mindedness

Bayesianism is a theory of probabilistic reasoning that attempts to capture the logic of confirming and disconfirming hypotheses. I first argue that Bayesianism reveals striking parallels between structures universally held as paradigms of rational belief systems and structures typically considered clear examples of irrational belief systems. I next explain that the crucial difference between these two types of belief systems is found not inside the systems but outside them, in the dynamics, i.e., the attitudes, by which such systems are revised and maintained. The principal attitude that distinguishes these belief systems is ＂open-mindedness.＂ I conclude that rationality and irrationality are primarily properties of attitudes, and derivatively of persons （who exhibit such attitudes） and of beliefs （that are maintained by such attitudes）. It turns out then that, on the one hand, the Bayesian approach reveals important truths about the nature of rationality and irrationality, but, on the other hand, it is inadequate as a theory of rationality, since it leaves some aspects of rationality and irrationality unaccounted for. The Bayesian analysis on the basis of which these conclusions are reached arises from a careful examination of the Duhem problem, which is the problem of determining the disconfirmation impact on the plausibility of hypotheses collectively responsible for a false observational consequence.

A Low Complexity Linear moving Average Filtering Technique for PAR Reduction in OFDm Systems

In this paper, a linear moving average recursive filtering technique is proposed to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDm) signals. The proposed low complexity technique is analyzed in an oversampled OFDm system and a simple distribution approximation of the oversampled and linearly filtered OFDm signals is also proposed. Corresponding time domain linear equalizers are developed to recover originally transmitted data symbols. Through extensive computer simulations, effects of the new filtering technique on the oversampled OFDm peak-to-average power ratio (PAR), power spectral density (PSD) and corresponding linear equalizers on the frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel transmission symbol-error-rate (SER) performance are investigated. The newly proposed recursive filtering scheme results in attractive PAR reduction, requires no extra fast Fourier transform/inverse fast Fourier transform (FFT/IFFT) operations, refrains from transmitting any side information, and reduces out-of-band radiation. Also, corresponding linear receivers are shown to perform very close to their frequency domain counterparts.

In vivo combination therapy of chloroquine and stigmasterol against Plasmodium berghei induced pathologies in mice

Objective:To investigate the effect of combination therapy of chloroquine and stigmasterol on Plasmodium(P.)berghei malaria-induced organ ***:Totally 35 mice weighing 20-30g were placed into 7 groups of 5 mice each and distributed as uninfected administered 100 mg/kg BW stigmasterol,uninfected administered only feed and water ad libitum,infected with *** and administered 50 mg/Kg BW stigmasterol,100 mg/kg BW stigmasterol,100 mg/kg BW stigmasterol plus 5 mg/kg BW chloroquine,and 5 mg/kg BW *** last group of mice served as *** infected and not treated *** levels of parasitemia,packed cell volume,and other biochemical parameters were ***:Combination therapy of *** infection with stigmasterol and chloroquine did not significantly(P>0.05)reduce parasitemia level while stigmasterol treatment alone significantly(Pmia ***,the *** induced anemia was decreased significantly(Pment with a combination of chloroquine and stigmasterol as well as with stigmasterol ***,the combination of chloroquine and stigmasterol significantly(Pm alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,urea and level of spleen total proteins in *** infected mice in comparison with the untreated *** of *** infected mice with stigmasterol alone and in combination with chloroquine significantly(Pm creatinine while serum and spleen malondialdehyde levels were significantly(P0.05)altered upon treatment with both doses of stigmasterol as well as the combination ***:This study concluded that the combination of stigmasterol and chloroquine could combat anemia and some organ pathologies associated with *** infection.
