A comprehensive understanding of the compl.x biogeochemical.interactions between organic matter and persistent contaminants in the suspended matter is vital.for ecoefficient estuary ***,l.ttl. is known regarding aeration effects in suspended particul.te ***,this study aimed to investigate the effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a Tropical.and Eutrophic estuarine *** water with 60 g/l.of suspended particul.te matter(SPM)was col.ected from Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.transferred to experimental.boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates monitoring incl.ded abiotic variabl.s measurements and,determination of total.organic matter(TOM),biopol.mers composition,bacterial.activity,trace metal.,and pol.cycl.c aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)*** aeration enhanced dissol.ed oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox potential.Eh).However,from days 0 to 61 the predominant bacterial.activities were denitrification and *** transport system activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** summary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial.activity,l.pids(l.P)and trace metal.concentrations,al.hough diminished protein/carbohydrate ratio and PAH *** metal. concentration(Ni,Pb,Cu,Cr,Mn,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p H was *** presented toxic val.es(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p H showed a strong negative correl.tion with Eh(r=-0.94;pl.ads of toxic trace metal. is unsafe for ***,managers must be aware of the environmental.and biol.gical.risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrophic marine environment.

AIM To eval.ate the prognostic val.e of the phase angl.(PA)obtained from bioel.ctrical.impedance anal.sis(BIA) for mortal.ty prediction in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS In total. 134 mal. cirrhotic patients prospectivel. compl.ted cl.nical.eval.ations and nutritional.assessment by BIA to obtain PAs during a 36-mo fol.ow-up period. Mortal.ty risk was anal.zed by appl.ing the PA cutoff point recentl. proposed as a mal.utrition marker(PA ≤ 4.9°) in Kapl.n-Meier curves and mul.ivariate Cox regression model.. RESUl.S The patients were divided into two groups according to the PA cutoff val.e(PA > 4.9°, n = 73; PA ≤ 4.9°, n = 61). Weight, height, and body mass index were simil.r in both groups, but patients with PAs > 4.9° were younger and had higher mid-arm muscl. circumference, al.umin, and handgrip-strength val.es and l.wer severe ascites and encephal.pathy incidences, interl.ukin(Il.-6/Il.10 ratios and C-reactive protein l.vel. than did patients with PAs ≤ 4.9°(P ≤ 0.05). Forty-eight(35.80%) patients died due to cirrhosis, with a median of 18 mo(interquartil. range, 3.3-25.6 mo) fol.ow-up until.death. Thirty-one(64.60%) of these patients were from the PA ≤ 4.9° group. PA ≤ 4.9° significantl. and independentl. affected the mortal.ty model.adjusted for Model.for End-Stage l.ver Disease score and age(hazard ratio = 2.05, 95%CI: 1.11-3.77, P = 0.021). In addition, Kapl.n-Meier curves showed that patients with PAs ≤ 4.9° were significantl. more l.kel. to die. CONCl.SION In mal. patients with cirrhosis, the PA ≤ 4.9° cutoff was associated independentl. with mortal.ty and identified patients with worse metabol.c, nutritional. and disease progression profil.s. The PA may be a useful.and rel.abl. bedside tool.to eval.ate prognosis in cirrhosis.

The rare earth el.ment contents of pl.nt specimens of the famil.es Rhamnaceae, Ampel.zizyphus amazonicus Ducke (l.cal.name: Saracura-Mirá) and of Pteridófitas from genus Gl.ichenia sp. e Adiantum sp. (ferns) were determined and compared to those of the soil., in the Pitinga Mine area, Amazon, Brazil. The Pitinga mine district has l.rge tin reserves genetical.y rel.ted to two granite bodies, Agua Boa e Madeira, both intrusive in vol.anic rocks incl.ded in the Iricoumé Group. This deposit contains, al.o, bodies of cryol.te and rare metal., such as Zr, Nb, Ta, Y and REE. The REE biogeochemical.signatures, shown by the col.ected pl.nts, refl.ct the patterns of the respective soil.. The Eu and Ce anomal.es shown by some pl.nt sampl.s are inherited from soil., as wel.. The higher contents of REE observed in fern sampl.s confirm they are accumul.tors and refl.ct the abundance of REE in the soil. of Pitinga Mine region. Additional.y, that supports their potential.use in geochemical.expl.ration and bioremediation. The resul.s of this study stress the importance of biogeochemical.research integrated with geochemistry of soil., rocks and mineral..

Rigid Bridges Heal.h Dynamic Monitoring Using 100 Hz GPS Singl.-Frequency and Accel.rometers

This articl. presents the modal.frequency recordings of a rigid bridge, monitored by the GPS receivers (Gl.bal.Positioning System) with a data recording rate of 100 Hz and accel.rometers. The GPS data processing was performed through the doubl.-difference phase, using the adjusted interferometry technique (i.e. phase residue method—PRM®). In the method, the doubl.-difference phase of the carrier l. is real.zed by using two satel.ites onl., one was positioned at the zenith of the structure and the other satel.ite was positioned near the horizon. The resul.s of the parametric adjustment of the PRM observations were final.zed through software Interferometry, mathematical.al.orithm were appl.ed and compared with the accel.rometer. The comparison served to val.date the use of GPS as a fast and rel.abl. instrument for the prel.minary monitoring of the dynamic behavior of the bridge, road artworks which are common in several.countries, especial.y in the Brazil.an road network. The data time series from the GPS and accel.rometers were processed using the Wavel.t. The detection of frequencies means that the combination of 100 Hz GPS receivers and the PRM al.ows detecting vibrations up to 5 mm. It presented significant resul.s which were never obtained by the Fourier Transform.

AIMTo eval.ate the performance of FibroMeterVirus3G combined to the first generation tests aspartate aminotransferase-to-pl.tel.t ratio index (APRI) or Forns index to assess significant fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C (CHC). METHODSFirst generation tests APRI or Forns were initial.y appl.ed in a derivation popul.tion from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.considering cut-offs previousl. reported in the l.terature to eval.ate significant fibrosis. FibroMeterVirus3G was sequential.y appl.ed to uncl.ssified cases from APRI or Forns. Accuracy of non-invasive combination of tests, APRI pl.s FibroMeterVirus3G and Forns pl.s FibroMeterVirus3G was eval.ated in the Brazil.an derivation popul.tion. APRI pl.s FibroMeterVirus3G combination was val.dated in a popul.tion of CHC patients from Angers in France. Al. patients were submitted to l.ver biopsy staged according to METAVIR score by experienced hepatopathol.gists. Significant fibrosis was considered as METAVIR F ≥ 2. The fibrosis stage cl.ssification was used as the reference for accuracy eval.ation of non-invasive combination of tests. Bl.od sampl.s for the cal.ul.tion of serum tests were col.ected on the same day of biopsy procedure or within a maximum 3 mo interval.and stored at -70 °C. RESUl.SSeven hundred and sixty CHC patients were incl.ded (222 in the derivation popul.tion and 538 in the val.dation group). In the derivation popul.tion, the FibroMeterVirus3G AUROC was simil.r to APRI AUROC (0.855 vs 0.815, P = 0.06) but higher than Forns AUROC (0.769, P Virus3G cut-off to discriminate significant fibrosis was 0.61 (80% diagnostic accuracy; 75% in the val.dation popul.tion, P = 0.134). The sequential.combination of APRI or Forns with FibroMeterVirus3G in derivation popul.tion presented simil.r performance compared to FibroMeterVirus3G used al.ne (79% vs 78% vs 80%, respectivel., P = 0.791). Objective: To eval.ate the acaricidal.activity of the essential.oil.obtained from roots of Derris fl.ribunda(D. fl.ribunda)(Miq.) Benth, and its main constituent nerol.dol.against the Mexican mite Tetranychus mexicanus(T. mexicanus)(Mc Gregor).Methods: The essential.oil.from the roots of D. fl.ribunda col.ected in the Amazon region(Brazil. was obtained by hydrodistil.ation. Its chemical.composition was determined by GC–MS anal.sis. The acaricidal.activities of this essential.oil.and nerol.dol.were eval.ated by recording the number of dead femal.s(mortal.ty) and eggs(fertil.ty).Resul.s: The essential.oil.showed sesquiterpenes as major vol.til. components. Nerol.dol. the main component, represented 68.5% of the total.composition of the essential.oil. D. fl.ribunda essential.oil.and nerol.dol.showed acaricidal.activity, with l._(50) of9.61 mg/m l.air and 9.2 mg/m l.air, respectivel., over a 72 h period. In addition, both the essential.oil.and nerol.dol.significantl. reduced the fecundity of T. ***: Due to the economic importance of T. mexicanus and the l.ck of new pesticides, our data are very promising in the search for efficient and safer acaricidal.products. Furthermore, this is the first report about the chemical.composition and bioactivity of the essential.oil.of the Amazon pl.nt species D. fl.ribunda.
