Variability of Air-Sea CO_(2) fluxes and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Distribution in the Atlantic Basin:A Coupled Model Analysis

The biogeochemical dynamics of carbon in the ocean is a subject of fundamental interest to environmental studies. In this context, we have implemented a ten year run of the Brazilian Earth System Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Model (BESM-OA2.3) integrated with TOPAZ biogeochemical model for the Atlantic basin. The modeled ΔpCO2 for the tropical Atlantic shows very clearly a high dominance of positive fluxes, that is, the CO2 fluxes are sea-to-air throughout the tropical region and for both winter and summer periods. In the mid-latitudes regions negatives fluxes (air-to-sea) were observed for both seasons. An exception to this pattern is an extensive negative tongue on the latitude 10N. The occurrence of this negative ΔpCO2 tongue region in the Tropical Atlantic is highly correlated to negative Evaporation-Precipitation values during this season. In the northern hemisphere (NH) summer the negative values of ΔpCO2 in the tropical Atlantic region are concentrated in the adjacent zone of the Amazon river mouth due to the North Equatorial Counter Current intensification. This process favors the formation of a carbon sink in the adjacent region of the Amazon river mouth. Model results show lowest values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in a surface layer (100 - 150 m). Highest DIC values are observed in deeper layers and concentrated in an equatorial band. The chlorophyll bloom in equatorial zones was well represented by the model. These blooms are the result of equatorial upwelling that brings the high concentration tongues of DIC present in the equatorial band towards the euphotic zone. This is the first published paper about the BESM-OA2.3 integrated with TOPAZ. The presented results suggest that this modeling system is able to reproduce the main regional carbon dynamics features of the mid-latitude/tropical Atlantic.

Effect of Carbon fillers in Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene Matrix Prepared by Twin-Screw Extrusion

Oxidized (GO) and expanded (G-Exp) graphite were employed to prepare composites with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) matrix using masterbatches of polyethylene with different compositions. The materials and a blend of UHMWPE/HDPE were prepared by extrusion and their properties were evaluated. The effect of carbon fillers on the crystalline structure, thermo dynamic-mechanical (DMTA) and thermal properties (melting and crystallization temperatures) of the composites were discussed. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements showed that the addition of masterbatch with GO and G-Exp significantly increased the crystallite size of composites, increasing the temperatures of melting, degradation, glass transition and the degree of crystallinity of polyethylene. DMTA analysis indicated the storage and loss moduli of composites in relation to neat UHMWPE, the blend and UHMWPE/composites. SEM micrographs showed a flatter, continuous and uniform surface meaning a compact lamellar structure. The present work resulted in interesting findings on the effects of GO on the crystalline structures, mechanical and thermal properties of UHMWPE, which can lead to generalizations useful for future work.

Chagas heart disease(CHD)affects approximately 30%of patients chronically infected with the protozoa Trypanosoma *** is classified into four stages of increasing severity according to electrocardiographic,echocardiographic,and clinical *** presents with a myriad of clinical manifestations,but its main complications are sudden cardiac death,heart failure,and ***,CHD has a higher incidence of sudden cardiac death and stroke than most other cardiopathies,and patients with CHD complicated by heart failure have a higher mortality than patients with heart failure caused by other *** patients with CHD,approximately 90%of deaths can be attributed to complications of Chagas *** cardiac death is the most common cause of death(55%–60%),followed by heart failure(25%–30%)and stroke(10%–15%).The high morbimortality and the unique characteristics of CHD demand an individualized approach according to the stage of the disease and associated complications the patient presents ***,the management of CHD is challenging,and in this review,we present the most updated available data to help clinicians and cardiologists in the care of these *** describe the clinical manifestations,diagnosis and classification criteria,risk stratification,and approach to the different clinical aspects of CHD using diagnostic tools and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.

AIM:To evaluate the effects of soy supplementation on insulin resistance,fatty liver and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) levels in non-diabetic patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS:In a prospective,randomized and singleblinded clinical trial,we compared patients with CHC who had casein as a supplement(n = 80)(control group),with patients who consumed a soy supplement diet(n = 80) [intervention group(IG)].Both groups received 32 g/d of protein for 12 ***:Patients' baseline features showed that 48.1% were overweight,43.7% had abdominal fat accumulation,34.7% had hepatic steatosis and 36.3% had an homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) ≥ *** analysis showed that protein supplementation diet reduced hepatic steatosis in both groups;however,significant reductions in ALT levels occurred in the soy *** regression modeling indicated that in the presence of severe fibrosis(f3/f4),g glutamyl transferase elevation and high density lipoprotein(HDL) reduction,the intervention group had 75% less chance of developing hepatic steatosis(OR= 0.25;95% CI:0.06-0.82) and 55% less chance of presenting with an ALT level ≥ 1.5 × the upper limit of normal(ULN)(OR = 0.45,95% CI:0.22-0.89).Soy treatment did not have any effect on insulin resistance(OR = 1.92;95% CI:0.80-4.83),which might be attributed to the fact that the HOMAIR values at baseline in most of our patients were in the normal *** hepatic fibrosis,an ALT level > 1.5 × ULN and visceral fat were predictors of an HOMA-IR ≥ *** IG group had a reduced risk of an ALT level > 1.5 × *** HOMA-IR ≥ 3.0 and HDL factors for increased ***:Soy supplementation decreased ALT levels and thus may improve liver inflammation in hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients;it also reduced hepatic steatosis in a subgroup of patients but did not change insulin *** should be considered in the nutritional care of HCV patients.

Raman Spectroscopy Analysis of Wollastonite/Tricalcium Phosphate Glass-Ceramics after Implantation in Critical Bone Defect in Rats

In this work wollastonite/tricalcium phosphate (W/TCP) glass-ceramics with three W/TCP weight ratios (20/80;60/40 and 80/20) were implanted in rat calvaria and the modifications taking place during implantation were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The experimental glass-ceramics were composed of different contents of βW, αW, βTCP, αTCP, and glassy phases. Materials were implanted for 7-, 15-, 45- and 120-day periods after which the implanted materials were recovered and analyzed by fT-Raman spectroscopy. The results suggested that the αW phase reabsorbs fast during implantation in the glass-ceramics 60/40 and 80/20, whereas βTCP and αTCP glass-ceramic are gradually attenuated and replaced by biological apatite-like bands. In the glass-ceramic 20/80, the bands related to the βTCP phase remained unvaried in all analyzed periods. New bands associated with the deposition of collagenous material appeared during implantation for all 60/40 and 80/20 glass-ceramics experimental groups, but important differences in intensities between both groups. The spectra corresponding to implants of 60/40 glass-ceramic at the 120-day period were very similar to those of the control group (normal cortical bone), with regards to Raman shifts and intensities, as well as in the fWHM value of the 962 cm-1 apatite band (ν1 PO4 in hydroxyapatite), evidencing that apatite deposited at the implant site has the same crystallinity than biological apatite in normal bone mineral. The glass-ceramic 20/80 behaved just as an osteoconductive filling material, while glass-ceramics 60/40 and 80/20 were able to induce deposition of organic matrix mineralized new tissue. The 60/40 glass-ceramic showed the best performance and the most similar Raman spectrum to normal cortical bone.

Data Mining of Spatio-Temporal Variability of Chlorophyll-a Concentrations in a Portion of the Western Atlantic with Low Performance Hardware

The contemporary scientific literature that deals with the dynamics of marine chlorophyll-a concentration is already customarily employing data mining techniques in small geographic areas or regional samples. However, there is little focus on the issue of missing data related to chlorophyll-a concentration estimated by remote sensors. Intending to provide greater scope to the identification of the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of marine chlorophyll-a concentrations, and to improve the reliability of results, this study presents a data mining approach to cluster similar chlorophyll-a concentration behaviors while implementing an iterative spatiotemporal interpolation technique for missing data inference. Although some dynamic behaviors of said concentrations in specific areas are already known by specialists, systematic studies in large geographical areas are still scarce due to the computational complexity involved. for this reason, this study analyzed 18 years of NASA satellite observations in one portion of the Western Atlantic Ocean, totaling more than 60 million records. Additionally, performance tests were carried out in low-cost computer systems to check the accessibility of the proposal implemented for use in computational structures of different sizes. The approach was able to identify patterns with high spatial resolution, accuracy and reliability, rendered in low-cost computers even with large volumes of data, generating new and consistent patterns of spatiotemporal variability. Thus, it opens up new possibilities for data mining research on a global scale in this field of application.
