Approximating home ranges of humpback and fin whales in Drake Passage and Antarctica

Identifying home ranges—those areas traversed by individuals in their normal foraging,mating,and parenting activities—is an important aspect of cetacean *** these ranges facilitates identification of resource use and *** and humpback whales occur in Antarctica during the austral summer,but information regarding their home ranges is *** opportunistically collected whale sighting data from eight consecutive summer seasons spanning 2010–2017,we approximate the home ranges of humpback and fin whales around Drake Passage(DRA),West of Antarctic Peninsula(WAP),South Shetland Islands(SSI),an area northwest of the Weddell Sea(WeD),and around the South Orkney Islands(SOI).Approximate home ranges are identified using Kernel Density estimation(KDe).Most fin whales occurred north and northwest of the SOI,which suggests that waters near these islands support concentrations of this *** humpback whales were observed around the SSI,but unlike fin whales,their distributions were highly variable in other *** suggests spatial segregation in areas where both species exist such as SOI,SSI,and *** redundancy analysis(pRDA)suggests that the distributions of these species are more affected by spatial variables(latitude,longitude)than by local scale variables such as sea surface temperature and *** study presents a visual approximation of the home ranges of fin and humpback whales,and identifies variation in the effects of space and environmental variables on the distributions of these whales at different spatial scales.

Classification of low-density eeG for epileptic seizures by energy and fractal features based on eMD

We are here to present a new method for the classification of epileptic seizures from electroencephalogram(eeG) *** consists of applying empirical mode decomposition(eMD) to extract the most relevant intrinsic mode functions(IMFs) and subsequent computation of the Teager and instantaneous energy,Higuchi and Petrosian fractal dimension,and detrended fluctuation analysis(DFA) for each *** validated the method using a public dataset of 24 subjects with eeG signals from 22 channels and showed that it is possible to classify the epileptic seizures,even with segments of six seconds and a smaller number of channels(e.g.,an accuracy of0.93 using five channels).We were able to create a general machine-learning-based model to detect epileptic seizures of new subjects using epileptic-seizure data from various subjects,after reducing the number of instances,based on the k-means algorithm.

Microstructural characterization and mechanical behavior analysis of 7075-T6 aluminum subjected to simulated lightning strikes

Urbanization has opposite effects on the territory size of two passerine birds

The presence of heavy metals such as arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)can be considered one of the most toxic heavy *** study aims to develop and evaluate a graphene oxide(GO)based material functionalized with ferrihydrite for the removal of As(V)in the presence of Cr(VI).The adsorbent ferrihydrite-functionalized graphene oxide(GOFH)was characterized by SeM,FTIR,XRD,XPS,surface charge,BeT and *** adsorption capacities for As(V)and Cr(VI)were 160 and 66 mg g^(-1)respectively at pH 4 and 298 K,fitting the Langmuir *** binary systems,GOFH adsorbed As(V)with an adsorption capacity of 137 mg g^(-1)in the presence of 20 mg L^(-1)Cr(VI)at room *** analysis revealed an exothermic and spontaneous ***,GOFH effectively removed several coexisting anions from groundwater,including SO_(4)^(2-),CO_(3)^(2-)and Cl^(-).This work evidences the potential of GOFH for competitive adsorption of priority pollutants from complex *** GOFH material represents a technically and economically viable technology for application in groundwater decontamination,as it requires inexpensive precursors and ambient conditions during synthesis and operation.

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Necrotizing Pancreatitis: A Case Report

Introduction: Necrotizing pancreatitis management is complex and varies significantly among clinicians. Minimally invasive approaches like transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy are emerging as effective treatment options. This case report underscores the technique’s efficacy, clinical outcomes, and role in reducing complications. Clinical Observation: A 59-year-old male with a history of smoking and alcoholism presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Over the following weeks, he developed symptoms including asthenia, weight loss, and melena. Diagnostic workup revealed severe anemia and Balthazar e necrotizing pancreatitis, with significant intra-abdominal fluid collections and signs of infection. After initial conservative management, the patient underwent transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy due to deteriorating clinical status. The procedure involved removing necrotic tissue and performing a cystogastroanastomosis and jejunostomy. Postoperative care included fasting, parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and enzymatic replacement. The patient recovered well, with reduced necrotic tissue on follow-up imaging, and was discharged twelve days post-surgery [1]. Conclusion: Transgastric necrosectomy by laparoscopy is a valuable first-line surgical option for patients with symptomatic necrotizing pancreatitis, particularly in cases without prior interventions. This minimally invasive technique helps reduce major complications and mortality, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional open necrosectomy. The multidisciplinary approach and careful postoperative management were crucial to the patient’s favorable outcome. The case highlights the potential of transgastric necrosectomy as an effective treatment strategy in managing complex pancreatitis cases, including those with associated duodenal perforation [2].

In general terms,the acute inflammatory reaction in conditions of infection or tissue damage is a response of the immune system to cope with survival and return to ***,the reaction is initiated by edema followed by the progressive accumulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMN)and monocytes that differentiate into macrophages,with production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes(e.g.,LTB4)and prostaglandins(e.g.,PGe2,PGI2,PGF2),which in excess may progress to chronic inflammation(1).Considering that the acute inflammatory response is a protective and self-limited phenomenon,its resolution is an active programmed reaction that is set in by specific pro-resolving mediators(SPMs),which are derived from n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(n-3 PUFAs).
