Adult neurogenesis:a real hope or a delusion?

Adult neurogenesis,the process of creating new neurons,involves the coordinated division,migration,and differentiation of neural stem cells.This process is restricted to neurogenic niches located in two distinct areas of the brain:the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle,where new neurons are generated and then migrate to the olfactory bulb.Neurogenesis has been thought to occur only during the embryonic and early postnatal stages and to decline with age due to a continuous depletion of neural stem cells.Interestingly,recent years have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of adult brain neurogenesis,bridging the knowledge gap between embryonic and adult neurogenesis.Here,we discuss the current status of adult brain neurogenesis in light of what we know about neural stem cells.In this notion,we talk about the importance of intra cellular signaling molecules in mobilizing endogenous neural stem cell prolife ration.Based on the current understanding,we can declare that these molecules play a role in targeting neurogenesis in the mature brain.However,to achieve this goal,we need to avoid the undesired proliferation of neural stem cells by controlling the necessary checkpoints,which can lead to tumorigenesis and prove to be a curse instead of a blessing or hope.

The development and implementation of sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices are indispensable as alternatives to pesticide use and to keep populations of soil-borne plant pathogens at levels that do not affect crop productivity.The present research evaluates the incidence of soil-borne phytopathogens on the pineapple variety MD-2,which was subjected to different treatments:Incorporation of Crotalaria juncea into the soil(organic amendment),application of dolomitic lime to soil(inorganic amendment),and the use of plastic mulch covering the soil.During the crop cycle(15 months),the following variables were evaluated:plant height(cm),fruit weight(kg·plant^(−1)),crop yield(ton·ha^(−1)),the bud root disease incidence caused by phytophthora nicotianae,number of soil phytoparasitic nematodes and colony-forming-units(CFUs)of soil fungi and oomycetes.The results indicate that Crotalaria juncea treatment reduced the pathogen population(nematode and oomycetes)at levels that did not affect crop development,so that yield increased(18–20%).The incorporation of C.juncea into the soil as an organic amendment favors the populations of fungi disease suppressors(Trichoderma-Aspergillus).The phytoparasitic nematodes(Meloidogyne sp.,pratylenchus sp.,and Mesocriconema sp.)and oomycetes(phytophthora spp.,and pythium spp.)showed a reduction of their population levels by effects of organic amendment(C.juncea).The plastic mulch was also effective,probably due to the maintenance of optimal condition to crop growth and weed control.However,the dolomitic lime application had the poorest effect under the conditions of the study area on the variables analyzed.The described observations are characteristics of a system-based approach for the potential management of soil-borne pathogens of pineapple MD-2 in Veracruz,México.

Due to a complex geological and biotic history,the Isthmus of Tehuantepec(IT),has been long recognized as a driver for the evolutionary divergence of numerous lowland and highland taxa.Widely distributed in the lowlands of the American continent,the White-Tipped Dove(Leptotila verreauxi)is a polytypic species with 13 recognized subspecies.Four of these have been recorded in Mexico,and the distribution of three abuts at the IT,suggesting a contact zone.To estimate phylogenetic patterns,divergence times and genetic differentiation,we examined two mt DNA(ND2 and COI)and one n DNA(β-fibint 7)markers.We also used correlative ecological niche models(ENM)to assess whether ecological differences across the IT may have acted as a biogeographical boundary.We estimated paleodistributions during the Middle Holocene,Last Glacial Maximum and Last Interglacial,to evaluate the influence of climate changes on the distribution and demographic changes.Our results showed genetically distinct lineages that diverged approximately 2.5 million years ago.Climatic and ecological factors may have played a dual role in promoting differentiation,but also in the formation of a secondary contact zone in the southern IT.Our ecological niche comparisons indicated that the ecological niche of sympatric lineages at the IT are not identical,suggesting niches divergence;in addition,environmental niche models across the region indicated no abrupt biogeographic barriers,but the presence of regions with low suitability.These results suggest that genetic differentiation originated by a vicariant event probably related to environmental factors,favored the evolution of different ecological niches.Also,the absence of a biogeographic barrier but the presence of less suitable areas in the contact regions,suggest that secondary contact zones may be also maintained by climatic factors for the eastern group,but also by biotic interactions for the western group.

The objective of the present work is modeling the mobility habitus in the public transport system with low Co2 emission mechanics in the center of Mexico.In this sense,a documentary work was carried out with a review of sources indexed to national repositories,using the Delphi technique for the content analysis and the specification of the model.A study was conducted with a selection of 100 students to establish the reliability,linearity,sphericity,adequacy,and validity of an instrument from which a relationship of dependence between income and mobility habitus was observed.The limits of the search,selection,and processing of information are recognized,and it is recommended to extend the research to international repositories,as well as to employ a more sophisticated technique.

In Vitro-propagation of Agave tequilana Weber cv.azul in a Temporary Immersion System

In Mexico,there is a need to produce large quantities of plantlets for the establishment and replanting of blue(cv.azul)agave production areas.Most of these plots are within the origin denomination area(DOT,Spanish acronym)of the distilled product of this plant,known as tequila.The objective of this study was to develop an in vitropropagation protocol for Agave tequilana Weber cv.azul using segmented stems in both:solid and liquid media.A disinfection and in vitro technique were developed to obtain shoots,through plantlets collected in commercial plots,which attained 100%surface-disinfection and budding rate.At the multiplication stage,the effects of 6-Benzylaminopurine(BA)(0.0,4.4 and 13.2μM)and kinetin(0.0,9.4,18.8 and 37.6μM)were evaluated on lateralshoot production of segmented sagittal stems.These were cultivated on Murashige&Skoog(MS)medium,with the addition of 3.0%sucrose and 8 g L−1 agar.It was observed that BA and kinetin increased the number of shoots per explant,obtaining up to 18 and 26,respectively.Furthermore,it was found that just the sagittal segmentation of explants increased axillary budding.On the other hand,segmented-stem bases were grown in MS liquid medium with 3.0%sucrose,inside a RITAsystem,programmed by a 5 min immersion step with a frequency of every 4 h.The effect of Indole−3-Acetic acid(IAA)(0.57,2.9,5.7μM)was evaluated,while maintaining a concentration of BA(13.2μM).It was observed that the greatest concentration of IAA led to the formation of more than 20 buds per explant.These results offer a new methodology to increase the efficiency of A.tequilana Weber cv.azul-in vitro multiplication by sagittal segmentation of stems and the addition of BA and/or IAA.

This review provides a recompilation of the most important and recent strategies employed to increase the efficiency of metal-organic framework(MOF)-based systems toward the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution(pHE)reaction through specific strategies:tailoring the photocatalytic activity of bare MOFs and guest@MOF composites,formation of heterojunctions based on MOFs and various photocatalysts,and inorganic photocatalysts derived from MOFs.According to the data reported in this mini-review,the most effective strategy to improve the pHE of MOFs relies on modifying the linkers with new secondary building units(SBUs).Although several reviews have investigated the photocatalytic activity of MOFs from a general point of view,many of these studies relate this activity to the physicochemical and catalytic properties of MOFs.However,they did not consider the interactions between the components of the photocatalytic material.This study highlights the effects of strength of the supramolecular interactions on the photocatalytic performance of bare and MOF-based materials during pHE.A thorough review and comparison of the results established that metal-nanoparticle@MOF composites have weak van der Waals forces between components,whereas heterostructures only interact with MOFs at the surface of bare materials.Regarding material derivatives from MOFs,we found that pyrolysis destroyed some beneficial properties of MOFs for pHE.Thus,we conclude that adding SBUs to organic linkers is the most efficient strategy to perform the pHE because the SBUs added to the MOFs promote synergy between the two materials through strong coordination bonds.

Subjective experience and visual attention to a historic building:A real-world eyetracking study

The objective of this exploratory study is to discover the relations between visual attention to an architectural work and the subjective experiences produced during its observation.A subjective experience with a building is the specific manner in which an architectural element or the building as a whole are presented to a person.The qualities of the element as how they are perceived and the inner world of the observer are both considered in this subjective experience.The aims of this study are to describe the experience that a building generates in people,pinpoint what has attracted the participant's attention during each view of the building in an itinerary;and understand which aspects of this selected case study have made it an object of attend on.An eye-tracking study was carried out using a portable eye tracker.This tool allowed the participants to walk freely around the exterior of a historic train station in the city of Monterrey,Mexico.Two groups of participants,with routes starting from opposite sides of the building,contemplated it while using the eye tracker.Eye tracking allowed for the identification of the architectural elements that were objects of attention,the lengths of observation,and the points of view from which the elements were observed.Other data collection techniques,such as the think-aloud protocol and a special type of survey,were used to deeply understand the experiences that accompanied the visual exploration of the historic building.Results suggest that the participants observed the different architectural elements for a time that was neither influenced by the route used to explore the building nor the point where that route was initiated.The architectural elements identified as examples of high-quality architecture and perceived as aesthetically pleasing by the participants during the itinerary were observed for longer times.

Seven-year follow-up of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens with central port design

Background:To assess the clinical outcomes of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens(ICL)with a central port throughout 7 years of follow-up.Methods:Eighty-four eyes of 52 patients were evaluated over a follow-up period of 7 years after V4c ICL implantation.Uncorrected(UDVA)and corrected(CDVA)distance visual acuities,refraction,intraocular pressure(IOp),endothelial cell density(ECD)and vault were analysed.Results:The mean postoperative UDVA(logMAR)was 0.04±0.11,0.13±0.19 and 0.17±0.23 at 1-,5-and 7-years,respectively(pp period(0.02±0.08 and 0.02±0.08,at 5-and 7-years,respectively,p=0.2).At all follow-up visits,more than 95%of the eyes achieved a CDVA of 20/25 or better and more than 85%a CDVA of 20/20.At the end of the follow-up(7 years),no eye lost more lines of CDVA,56 eyes(66.7%)and 28 eyes(33.3%)gained lines of CDVA.At 7-years,the spherical equivalent was−0.62±0.62 D.No significant increase in IOp(>20 mmHg or an increase higher than 5 mmHg)occurred in any case throughout the 7-year of follow-up.The loss in ECD from the preoperative baseline at the last follow-up visit was 2.6%.No intraoperative or postoperative complications or adverse events occurred during the follow-up period.Conclusions:The outcomes of this study show the long-term viability of the V4c ICL implantation as a surgical option for the correction of myopia.

The worldwide prevalence of spinal cord injury （SCI） ranges from 233 to 755 per million inhabitants, whereas the report- ed incidence lies between 10.4 and 83 per million inhabitants annually （Wyndaele and Wyndaele, 2006）. Thus, the socio- economic impact of SCI associated with cervical trauma is high enough that it could become an important concern in the vast majority of developed countries.

BACKGROUND The global coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has caused more than 5 million deaths.Multiorganic involvement is well described,including liver disease.In patients with critical COVID-19,a new entity called"post-COVID-19 cholangiopathy"has been described.CASE SUMMARY Here,we present three patients with severe COVID-19 that subsequently developed persistent cholestasis and chronic liver disease.All three patients required intensive care unit admission,mechanical ventilation,vasopressor support,and broad spectrum antibiotics due to secondary infections.Liver transplant protocol was started for two of the three patients.CONCLUSION Severe COVID-19 infection should be considered a potential risk factor for chronic liver disease and liver transplantation.
