Decreased morphogenetic potential in peach palm stem-like cells in long-term in vitro conditions

Peach palm(Bactris gasipaes Kunth)has been micropropagated from pre-procambial cells that provide stem-like cell niches,(i.e.,pre-procambial cells),multipotent,pluripotent and totipotent for direct vascularization,adventitious buds and somatic embryogenesis,*** direct induction of adventitious buds and somatic embryogenesis reduces the frequency of mutations when compared to indirect ***-term in vitro cultivation of perennial species such as peach palm cause the clones to age and deteriorate;however,the consequences for morphogenesis potential are not fully *** morphogenic potential of peach palm clones established and in vitro cultivated for 8 years(regeneration of adventitious buds without callus formation)was investigated in leaves,roots and stem bases using histological and histochemical *** from long-term cultures(8-years-old)was compared to data from short-term cultures(1-year-old).Morphogenic pathways monitoring for direct induction of somatic embryos and adventitious buds revealed a strong morphogenic reduction potential in the pre-procambial cells,parenchyma cells in the proximal region of stem bases,and external cells of leaf *** cells of shoot apical meristems and pre-procambial cells commit cell reprogramming to the undifferentiated state and subsequent acquisition of cellular *** results are applicable in the micropropagation of peach palm,with consideration to obtaining clones and their long-term in vitro culture.

Mortality Trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases in the State of Sergipe,Brazil,1980-2013

Background:Neglected Tropical Diseases are a set of communicable diseases that affect the population so low socioeconomic status,particularly 1.4 billion people who are living below the poverty *** study has investigated the magnitude and mortality time trends for these diseases in the state of Sergipe,Northeast Region of ***:We conducted an ecological study of time series,based on secondary data derived from the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of *** mortality rates(crude,age-standardized rates and proportional ratio)were calculated from the deaths due to Neglected Tropical Diseases in the state of Sergipe,from 1980 to *** time trends were obtained using the Joinpoint regression ***:Three hundred six thousand and eight hundred seventy-two deaths were certified in the state and Neglected Tropical Diseases were mentioned as the underlying cause in 1,203 certificates(0.39%).Mean number of deaths was 35.38 per year,and crude and age-standardized mortality rates were,respectively:2.16 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.45-2.87)and 2.87 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.93-3.82);the proportional mortality ratio was 0.41%(95%CI:0.27-0.54).In that period,Schistosomiasis caused 654 deaths(54.36%),followed by Chagas disease,with 211(17.54%),and by Leishmaniases,with 142(11.80%)*** other diseases totalized 196 deaths(16.30%).There were increasing mortality trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases,Schistosomiasis and Chagas disease in the last 15 years,according to the age-standardized rates,and stability of the mortality trends for ***:The Neglected Tropical Diseases show increasing trends and are a real public health problem in the state of Sergipe,since they are responsible for significant mortality *** following diseases call attention for showing greater number of deaths in the period of study:Schistosomiasis,Chagas disease and *** finally suggest that public managers take appropri

Low-coverage whole-genome sequencing is an effective strategy for genome-wide association studies in hu- mans, due to the availability of large reference panels for genotype imputation. However, it is unclear whether this strategy can be utilized in other species without reference panels. Using simulations, we show that this approach is even more relevant in inbred species such as rice （Oryza sativa L.）, which are effectively haploid, allowing easy haplotype construction and imputation-based genotype calling, even without the availability of large reference panels. We sequenced 203 rice varieties with well-characterized phenotypes from the United States Department of Agriculture Rice Mini-Core Collection at an average depth of 1.5~ and used the data for mapping three traits. For the first two traits, amylose content and seed length, our approach leads to direct identification of the previously identified causal SN Ps in the major-effect loci. For the third trait, pericarp color, an important trait underwent selection during domestication, we identified a new major-effect locus. Although known loci can explain color variation in the varieties of two main subspecies of Asian domesticated rice,japonica and indica, the new locus identified is unique to another domesticated rice subgroup, aus, and together with existing loci, can fully explain the major variation in pericarp color in aus. Our discovery of a unique genetic basis of white pericarp in aus provides an example of convergent evolution during rice domestication and suggests that aus may have a domestication history independent of japonica and indica.

Initial Growth of Eucalyptus with Different Spatial Arrangements in Agrosilvopastoral Systems

Success of integrating livestock farming with forestry systems or SAF′s (Agroforestry Systems) highly depends on correct chose of the tree component and the best spatial arrangement of plants, for which eucalyptus has proven as an excellent option. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate eucalyptus wood yield under different spatial arrangements in agrosilvipastoral system. The arrangements were: single rows 10 × 2 m, double rows (2 × 3) + 15 m and (2 × 3) + 20 m and triple rows (3 × 2 × 3) +20 m. Silvicultural evaluations (DBH, tree height, tree volume and volume per hectare) were done eighteen months after experiment installation. The experimental design was randomized blocks with six repetitions and two trees per plot. Trees were arbitrarily identified in each spatial arrangement, numbered from 1 to 5, totaling 30 plots in each system. The DBH increased as the alleys became closer to each other, being higher in the10 × 2 m and (2 × 3) + 15 m systems;tree height increased in denser spacing—10 × 2 m, (2 × 3) + 15 m and (3 × 2 × 3) + 20 m;the volume of wood per plant and per hectare showed higher values in the 10 × 2 m and (2 × 3) + 15 m systems. The lowest yield was found in the system with the least amount of trees, i.e. (2 × 3) + 20 m (576 trees/ha).

Natural Mg silicates with different structures and morphologies: Reaction with K to produce K2MgSiO4 catalyst for biodiesel production

In this work, different magnesium silicate mineral samples based on antigorite, lizardite, chrysotile(which have the same general formula Mg3Si2O5(OH)4), and talc(Mg3Si4O10(OH)2) were reacted with KOH to prepare catalysts for biodiesel production. Simple impregnation with 20 wt% K and treatment at 700–900°C led to a solid-state reaction to mainly form the K2MgSiO4 phase in all samples. These results indicate that the K ion can diffuse into the different Mg silicate structures and textures, likely through intercalation in the interlayer space of the different mineral samples followed by dehydroxylation and K2MgSiO4 formation. All the materials showed catalytic activity for the transesterification of soybean oil(1:6 of oil : methanol molar ratio, 5 wt% of catalyst, 60°C). However, the best results were obtained for the antigorite and chrysotile precursors, which are discussed in terms of mineral structure and the more efficient formation of the active phase K2MgSiO4.

Quantitative Study on Nonmetallic Inclusion Particles in Steels by Automatic Image Analysis With Extreme Values Method

The presence of nonmetallic inclusion particles which appear during steelmaking process is harmful to the properties of steels, which is mainly as a function of some aspects such as size, volume fraction, shape, and distribution of these particles. The automatic image analysis technique is one of the most important tools for the quantitative determination of these parameters. The classical Student approach and the Extreme Values Method （EVM） were used for the inclusion size and shape determination and the evaluation of distance between the inclusion particles. The results thus obtained indicated that there were significant differences in the characteristics of the inclusion particles in the analyzed products. Both methods achieved results with some differences, indicating that EVM could be used as a faster and more reliable statistical methodology.

Different culture conditions applied to in vitro shoot multiplication of two Eucalyptus benthamii explant sources

Eucalyptus adult material requires more successive subcultures in the in vitro multiplication phase for increased vigor and cellular activity. This study evaluated the endophytic manifestation and shoot multiplication of one 13-year-old Eucalyptus benthamii clone under different culture conditions and used canopy branches(CB) and trunk base material as explant sources. The culture media were wood plant medium(WPM), Murashige and Skoog medium(MS) and JADS(Correia and co-authors medium).Based on the results of the initial multiplication experiment, further tests examined sucrose concentrations and p H. Morphophysiology, dry mass production, endophyticmanifestation and histochemical were determined. Explant sources responded differently to MS and JADS media, but the WPM medium promoted homogeneous *** responses were similar for both explant sources when sucrose concentrations varied. Shoots died in the absence of sucrose, showed high oxidation at 60 g L-1 and optimal development at 30 g L-1. Endophytes were more evident for shoots from the CB origin. Explant sources responded distinctively to treatment due to physiological and intrinsic genetic factors. Therefore, explant sources, different culture media, sucrose concentration and p H may determine micropropagation success and influence the presence and/or intensity of endophytic manifestation.
