In-situ UV-Vis Spectroscopy of Trisulfur Radicals in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Here we employ in-situ UV-Vis spectroscopy to monitor the sulfur redox reaction with oxygen-containing molecules as an additive,for example,biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid(BDC).Furthermore,Raman spectrum,electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR),and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry(ESI-MS)measurements reveal that the formation of BDC-S_(3)•^(‒)complexes can establish the long-term stability of polysulfide radicals,change the kinetics of sulfur redox reaction,and then generate decent capacity retention and rate capability.According to the density functional theory(DFT)analysis,S_(3)•^(‒)radicals are the underlying product of S_(6)^(2‒)cleavage,owing to the decreased chemical energy and the increased stability of S_(3)•^(‒)radicals through Lewis acid-base interaction.The assembled Li-S batteries with BDC additive deliver a high reversible capacity of 420 mA·h·g^(−1)over 200 cycles with over 98%Coulombic efficiency,under the current density of 0.2 C.

Global hybrid simulations of soft X-ray emissions in the Earth’s magnetosheath

Earth’s magnetopause is a thin boundary separating the shocked solar wind plasma from the magnetospheric plasmas,and it is also the boundary of the solar wind energy transport to the magnetosphere.Soft X-ray imaging allows investigation of the large-scale magnetopause by providing a two-dimensional(2-D)global view from a satellite.By performing 3-D global hybrid-particle-in-cell(hybrid-PIC)simulations,we obtain soft X-ray images of Earth’s magnetopause under different solar wind conditions,such as different plasma densities and directions of the southward interplanetary magnetic field.In all cases,magnetic reconnection occurs at low latitude magnetopause.The soft X-ray images observed by a hypothetical satellite are shown,with all of the following identified:the boundary of the magnetopause,the cusps,and the magnetosheath.Local X-ray emissivity in the magnetosheath is characterized by large amplitude fluctuations(up to 160%);however,the maximum line-of-sight-integrated X-ray intensity matches the tangent directions of the magnetopause well,indicating that these fluctuations have limited impact on identifying the magnetopause boundary in the X-ray images.Moreover,the magnetopause boundary can be identified using multiple viewing geometries.We also find that solar wind conditions have little effect on the magnetopause identification.The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)mission will provide X-ray images of the magnetopause for the first time,and our global hybrid-PIC simulation results can help better understand the 2-D X-ray images of the magnetopause from a 3-D perspective,with particle kinetic effects considered.

The interplay between the host circadian clock and microbiota has significant influences on host metabolism processes,and circadian desynchrony triggered by high-fat diet(HFD)is closely related to metabolic disorders.In this study,the modulatory effects of piperine(PIP)on lipid metabolism homeostasis,gut microbiota community and circadian rhythm of hepatic clock gene expressions in obese rats were investigated.The Sprague-Dawley(SD)rats were fed with normal diet(ND),HFD and HFD supplemented with PIP,respectively.After 9 weeks,rats were sacrificed with tissue and fecal samples collected for circadian analysis.Results showed that chronic PIP administration ameliorated the obesity-induced alterations in lipid metabolism and dysregulation of hepatic clock gene expressions in obese rats.The gut microbial communities studied through 16S rRNA sequencing showed that PIP ameliorated the imbalanced nicrobiota and recovered the circadian rhythm of Lactobacillaceae,Desulfovibrionaceae,Paraprevotellaceae,and Lachnospiraceae.The fecal metabolic profiles indicated that 3-dehydroshikimate,cytidine and lithocholyltaurine were altered,which were involved in the amino acid and fatty acid metabolism process.These findings could provide theoretical basis for PIP to work as functional food to alleviate the lipid metabolism disorder,circadian rhythm misalignment,and gut microbiota dysbiosis with wide applications in the food and pharmaceutic industries.

An asymmetric catalytic strategy in photocatalysis utilizing a chirality-induced approach through an organocatalytic/photoredox relay catalysis strategy is successfully achieved for the rapid construction of polycyclic compounds containing vicinal amino alcohols in a one-pot protocol. This methodology facilitates the efficient synthesis of diverse substituted polycyclic tetrahydroquinoline and benzofuran-derived vicinal amino alcohols, each containing five consecutive chiral centers, with high yields,excellent diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities(up to 95% yield, >20:1 dr and 98% ee), under mild reaction conditions driven by sequential bifunctional squaramide organocatalyst-catalyzed [4+2] annulation and photocatalyst-catalyzed ketyl radical addition cyclization reaction process. Furthermore, investigations into the stereoselectivity mechanism and high-resolution mass spectrometry(HRMS) experiments on free radical trapping have provided evidence for elucidating the detailed mechanism of chirality-induced processes and chiral intermediate conversions in this procedure.

Hepatectomy is still the major curative treatment for patients with liver malignancies.However,it is still a big challenge to remove the tumors in the central posterior area,especially if their location involves the retrohepatic inferior vena cava and hepatic veins.Ex vivo liver resection and auto-transplantation(ELRA),a hybrid technique of the traditional liver resection and transplantation,has brought new hope to these patients and therefore becomes a valid alternative to liver transplantation.Due to its technical difficulty,ELRA is still concentrated in a few hepatobiliary centers that have experienced surgeons in both liver resection and liver transplantation.The efficacy and safety of this technique has already been demonstrated in the treatment of benign liver diseases,especially in the advanced alveolar echinococcosis.Recently,the application of ELRA for liver malignances has gained more attention.However,standardization of clinical practice norms and international consensus are still lacking.The prognostic impact in these oncologic patients also needs further evaluation.In this review,we summarized the principles and recent progresses on ELRA.

Background: The serum vitamin D level varies widely by population, and studies have linked vitamin D levels with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the relationship is inconsistent and the impact of vitamin D on T2DM among East chinese adults is unclear. The study aimed to investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and the risk of T2DM and evaluated whether the association is modified by genetic predisposition.Methods: In the Survey on Prevalence in East china for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors (SPECT-china) cohort, 1862 participants free of T2DM at baseline were included. A weighted genetic risk score was calculated with 28 variants associated with T2DM. Hierarchical logistic models were used to examine the association of serum 25(OH)D and genetic risk with T2DM.Results: After a 5-year follow-up, 132 cases of T2DM were documented. We observed no significant association between quartiles of serum 25(OH)D and T2DM risk after multivariable adjustment (χ2 = 0.571,Pfor trend = 0.426). Compared to those in the lowest quartile of 25(OH)D, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval [CI]) for participants with increased quartiles were 1.29 (0.74-2.25), 1.35 (0.77-2.36), and 1.27 (0.72-2.24), respectively. We observed a positive association of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) with 25(OH)D at baseline (β = 1.752,P = 0.001) and after follow-up (β = 1.385,P = 0.003), and a negative association of ln conversion homeostasis model assessment (HOMA)-β with 25(OH)D at baseline (β = -0.982,P = 0.021). There was no significant interaction between 25(OH)D and diabetes genetic predisposition on the risk of T2DM (χ2 = 2.710,Pfor interaction = 0.100). The lowest OR (95% CI) of T2DM was among participants with low genetic risk and the highest quartile of 25(OH)D (0.17 [0.05–0.62]).Conclusion: Serum 25(OH)D may be irrelevant to the risk of incident T2DM among East chinese adults regardless of genetic predisposition.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy of electroacupuncture(EA)intervention on myocardial protection and postoperative rehabilitation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB).METHODS:Eight databases,including Pub Med,Embase,the Cochrane Library,Web of Science,chinese Bio Medical Literature Database,china National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,Wanfang Data,china Science and Technology Journal Database,and two clinical trial registries,were searched.All randomized controlled trials(RCTs)related to EA intervention in cardiac surgery with CPB were collected.Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria,two researchers independently screened articles and extracted data.After the quality evaluation,RevMan 5.3 software was used for analysis.RESULTS:Fourteen RCTs involving 836 patients were included.Compared with the control treatment,EA significantly increased the incidence of cardiac automatic rebeat after aortic unclamping[relative risk(RR)=1.15,95%confidence interval(CI)(1.01,1.31),P<0.05;moderate].Twenty-four hours after aortic unclamping,EA significantly increased the superoxide dismutase[standardized mean difference(SMD)=0.96,95%CI(0.32,1.61),P<0.05;low],and interleukin(IL)-2[SMD=1.33,95%CI(0.19,2.47),P<0.05;very low]expression levels and decreased the malondialdehyde[SMD=-1.62,95%CI(-2.15,-1.09),P<0.05;moderate],tumour necrosis factor-α[SMD=-1.28,95%CI(-2.37,-0.19),P<0.05;moderate],and cardiac troponin I[SMD=-1.09,95%CI(-1.85,-0.32),P<0.05;low]expression levels as well as the inotrope scores[SMD=-0.77,95%CI(-1.22,-0.31),P<0.05;high].There was no difference in IL-6 and IL-10 expression levels.The amount of intraoperative sedative[SMD=-0.31,95%CI(-0.54,-0.09),P<0.05;moderate]and opioid analgesic[SMD=-0.96,95%CI(-1.53,-0.38),P<0.05;low]medication was significantly lower in the EA group than in the control group.Moreover,the postoperative tracheal intubation time[SMD=-0.92,95%CI(-1.40,-0.45),P<0.05;low]and intensive care unit stay[SMD=-1.71,95%CI(-3.06,-0.36),P<0.05;low]were significan

Roles of endophytic fungi in medicinal plant abiotic stress response and TCM quality development

Medicinal plants,as medicinal materials and important drug components,have been used in traditional and folk medicine for ages.However,being sessile organisms,they are seriously affected by extreme environmental conditions and abiotic stresses such as salt,heavy metal,temperature,and water stresses.Medicinal plants usually produce specific secondary metabolites to survive such stresses,and these metabolites can often be used for treating human diseases.Recently,medicinal plants have been found to partner with endophytic fungi to form a long-term,stable,and win-win symbiotic relationship.Endophytic fungi can promote secondary metabolite accumulation in medicinal plants.The close relationship can improve host plant resistance to the abiotic stresses of soil salinity,drought,and extreme temperatures.Their symbiosis also sheds light on plant growth and active compound production.Here,we show that endophytic fungi can improve the host medicinal plant resistance to abiotic stress by regulating active compounds,reducing oxidative stress,and regulating the cell ion balance.We also identify the deficiencies and burning issues of available studies and present promising research topics for the future.This review provides guidance for endophytic fungi research to improve the ability of medicinal plants to resist abiotic stress.It also suggests ideas and methods for active compound accumulation in medicinal plants and medicinal material development during the response to abiotic stress.

The development of stereodivergent synthetic methods to access all four stereoisomers of biologically importantα-fluoroγ-butyrolactones containing vicinal stereocenters is of great importance and poses a formidable challenge owing to ring strain and steric hindrance.Herein,a novel asymmetric[3+2]annulation ofα-fluoroα-azaaryl acetates with vinylethylene carbonate was successfully developed through Cu/Ir-catalyzed cascade allylic alkylation/lactonization,affording a variety of enantioenrichedα-fluoroγ-butyrolactones bearing vicinal stereogenic centers with high reaction efficiency and excellent levels of both stereoselectivity and regioselectivity(up to 98%yield,generally>20:1 dr and>99%ee).Notably,all four stereoisomers of these pharmaceutically valuable molecules could be accessed individually via simple permutations of two enantiomeric catalysts.In addition,other azaaryl acetates bearingα-methyl,α-chlorine orα-phenyl group were tolerated well in this transformation.Reaction mechanistic investigations were conducted to explore the process of this bimetallic catalysis based on the results of reaction intermediates,isotopic labelling experiments,and kinetic studies.
