Effect of intensity and duration of anthropic noises on European mink locomotor activity and fecal cortisol metabolite levels

Human activities involving noise emission can affect wild *** mink was exposed to road noise and human voice playbacks to analyze how sound intensity level and duration of both noises altered the time that individuals were active and if their fecal cortisol metabolite(FCM)levels varied.A Hierarchical Analysis Cluster was performed to establish 2 mink groups with respect to both noise source type:short duration/low intensity(Sl)and long duration/high intensity(lH).We performed general linear mixed models to evaluate the variation in locomotor activity duration(s)and FCM(nanogram per gram)levels,*** results showed both road noise and human voices decreased locomotor activity duration in Sl more sharply compared with lH,and human voices were the triggers that induced the most pronounced response to both exposure ***(ng/g)levels increased in Sl compared with lH during road noise while the opposite happened during human *** based on sex and age of individuals were *** conclusion,noise characteristics given by the sound type determined the variations in locomotor activity duration while noise exposure level determined the variations in FCM(ng/g)*** should be paid to noisy activities(e.g.,recreational activities for visitors in protected natural areas)and loud groups of people to conserve wildlife,especially noise sensitive species.

Understanding the immune response and the current landscape of immunotherapy in pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)is an aggressive tumor with high *** with surgery,radiotherapy,chemotherapy,and other locoregional or systemic therapies,the survival rates for PDAC are low and have not significantly changed in the past *** special characteristics of the PDAC’s microenvironment and its complex immune escape mechanism need to be considered when designing novel therapeutic approaches in this *** is characterized by chronic inflammation with a high rate of tumor-associated macrophages and myeloid-derived suppressor cells and a low rate of natural killer and effector T *** pancreatic microenvironment is a fibrotic,microvascularized stroma that isolates the tumor from systemic ***,a novel approach that has demonstrated effectiveness in certain solid tumors,has failed to show any practice-changing results in pancreatic cancer,with the exception of PDACs with mismatch repair deficiency and high tumor mutational burden,which show prolonged survival rates with ***,numerous clinical trials are attempting to assess the efficacy of immunotherapeutic strategies in PDAC,including immune checkpoint inhibitors,cancer vaccines,and adoptive cell transfer,alone or in combination with other immunotherapeutic agents,chemoradiotherapy,and other targeted therapies.A deep understanding of the immune response will help in the development of new therapeutic strategies leading to improved clinical outcomes for patients with PDAC.

Omphaloceles occur in about 1 in 5000 births and are the second most common congenital abdominal wall defects.1 Repair remains a surgeon’s preference with early closure only attempted for small-to medium omphalo-celes,while delayed closure is used for giant omphaloceles.2-4 In recent years,novel tech-niques that aim at reducing the disproportion between the abdominal cavity and the volume of the extra-abdominal viscera have been described to manage giant omphaloceles.

Sperm kinematic, head morphometric and kinetic- morphometric subpopulations in the blue fox （Alopex lagopus）

This work provides information on the blue fox ejaculated sperm quality needed for seminal dose calculations. Twenty semen samples, obtained by masturbation, were analyzed for kinematic and morphometric parameters by using CASA-Mot and CASA-Morph system and principal component （PC） analysis. For motility, eight kinematic parameters were evaluated, which were reduced to PC1, related to linear variables, and PC2, related to oscillatory movement. The whole population was divided into three independent subpopulations： SP1, fast cells with linear movement; SP2, slow cells and nonoscillatory motility; and SP3, medium speed cells and oscillatory movement. In almost all cases, the subpopulation distribution by animal was significantly different. Head morphology analysis generated four size and four shape parameters, which were reduced to PC 1, related to size, and PC2, related to shape of the cells. Three morphometric subpopulations existed. SPI： large oval cells; SP2： medium size elongated cells; and SP3. small and short cells. The subpopulation distribution differed between animals. Combining the kinematic and morphometric datasets produced PC1, related to morphometric parameters, and PC2, related to kinematics, which generated four sperm subpopulations - SPI.. high oscillatory motility, large and short heads; SP2; medium velocity with small and short heads; SP3. slow motion small and elongated cells; and SP4. high linear speed and large elongated cells. Subpopulation distribution was different in all animals. The establishment of sperm subpopulations from kinematic, morphometric, and combined variables not only improves the well-defined fox semen characteristics and offers a good conceptual basis for fertility and sperm preservation techniques in this species, but also opens the door to use this approach in other species, included humans.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates are natural,biodegradable,thermoplastic and sustainable polymers with a huge potential in fabrication of bioresorbable implantable devices for tissue *** describe a comparative evaluation of three medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates(mcl-PHAs),namely poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate),poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydoxydecanoate)and poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydroxydecanoate-co-3-hydroxydodecanoate),one short chain length polyhydroxyalkanoate,poly(3-hydroxybutyrate),P(3HB)and synthetic aliphatic polyesters(polycaprolactone and polylactide)with a specific focus on nerve regeneration,due to mechanical properties of mcl-PHAs closely matching nerve *** vitro biological studies with NG108-15 neuronal cell and primary Schwann cells did not show a cytotoxic effect of the materials on both cell *** mcl-PHAs supported cell adhesion and *** the three mcl-PHAs,P(3HO-co-3HD)exhibited superior properties with regards to numbers of cells adhered and viable cells for both cell types,number of neurite extensions from NG108-15 cells,average length of neurite extensions and Schwann ***,similar characteristics were observed for flat P(3HB)surfaces,high rigidity of this biomaterial,and FDA-approved polymers such as PllA,limits their applications in peripheral nerve ***,we have designed,synthesized and evaluated these materials for nerve tissue engineering and regenerative medicine,the interaction of mcl-PHAs with neuronal and Schwann cells,identifying mcl-PHAs as excellent materials to enhance nerve regeneration and potentially their clinical application in peripheral nerve repair.

Interactions among living beings are the structuring basis of ecosystems,and studies of networks allow us to identify the patterns and consistency of such *** networks reflect the energy flow of communities,and identifying network structure and the biological aspects that influence its stability is crucial to understanding ecosystem *** used antagonistic anuran interactions-predator-prey and host-parasite-to assess structural patterns and to identify the key anuran species structuring these *** tested whether anuran body-size and life-habit are related to their roles in these *** collected individuals of 9 species of anurans from an area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and identified their prey and helminth *** used network(modularity,specialization,and nestedness)and centrality metrics(degree,closeness,and betweenness)to identify the role of anuran species in both *** then evaluated whether anuran body-size or life-habit were related to anuran centrality using generalized linear mixed *** networks formed specialized interactions in compartments composed by key species from different *** our networks,anurans with rheophilic and cryptozoic habit are central in predator-prey networks,and those with larger body size and arboreal and cryptozoic habit in the host-parasite *** study represents a step towards a better understanding of the influential factors that affect the structure of anuran antagonist networks,as well as to recognize the functioning roles of anuran species.

Dear Editor, Cajal bodies （CBs） are sub-nuclear bodies first described in neurons by Ramon y Cajal in 1903 and subsequently character- ized in both plant and animals （Gall, 2003）. They appear close to the nucleoli as discrete foci whose size and number vary during the cell cycle （Strzelecka et al., 2010）. They are dynamic structures that move, fuse, and separate, depending on the transcriptional status of the cell （Cioce and lamond, 2005）. CBs are involved in assembly and trafficking of small nucleolar ribonucleopro- teins （snoRNPs） and in assembly and trafficking of spliceoso- mal small nuclear ribonucleoprotein （snRNPs） complexes that are involved in mRNA splicing （Gall, 2003; Cioce and lamond, 2005）. CBs also contain components of the machinery involved in siRNA-mediated silencing and in methylation of repetitive DNA （li et al., 2006）.

Thermal and photoperiodic requirements of the seedling stage of three tropical forest species

Air temperature and photoperiod play an important role in the seedling development for tropical forest *** variables are sensitive to climate,and so evaluating thermal and photoperiodic effects on seedling development is fundamental,especially for climate change *** to quantify thermal time and the energy required for plants to reach a development stage include air temperature and cardinal *** photoperiod will also affect physiological reactions of a plant and thus its *** we evaluated the six thermal time methods widely used to compute thermal requirement,and identified the influence of the photoperiod from the 2015 and2016 growing seasons and 12 sowing dates in Itajubá,Minas Gerais state,Brazil,on seedling development of three native tropical forest species Psidium guajava l.(Myrtaceae),Citharexylum myrianthum Cham.(Verbenaceae),and Bixa orellana l.(Bixaceae).The method used to quantify thermal time influenced the analytical results of seedling development;the one that considered three cardinal temperatures and compared them with the mean air temperature(Method5)performed better in computing thermal *** influence of photoperiod on seedling development was inconclusive for the three species,but all three developed better in mild temperatures(between 13.3℃and 26.9℃)with a photoperiod shorter than 13 h.
