Alternative Medicine and Molecular Mechanisms in Chronic Degenerative Diseases

Knowledge of healing plants worldwide properties it has been extensively studied by their biological activities. The increasing number of plant users for healthcare originated the Research Center in Complementary Alternative Medicine, National Institute of Health (NIH) whose primary function is to be alert with a strictly scientific sense about de use of plants as main source of Complementary Alternative Medicine. It is currently about the synergy known that Is achieved on the hepatoprotective, antioxidant and hypoglycaemic activities with mixtures formed by selected plants and combined. These plants are characterized by their content of hidroxyphenolic compounds as cynarin, rosmarinic acid, flavonoids silybin and among others. Actually this kind of herbal preparations are investigated in patients with cirrhosis, type II diabetes mellitus, breast cancer and arthritis diseases. Patients with Chronic Degenerative Diseases are in state of stress and Its metabolism produces free radicals such as superoxide oO2, hydroxyl oOH and peroxynitrite highly reactive with unsaturated fatty acids of cell membranes producing lipid peroxidation. The main product of this process is the peroxyl, that when it’s reduced forms hydroxiperoxyle its decomposition forms MDA and 4-hidroxialquenal. These substances bind to R-SH2 of the aminoacids of the proteins and to the thymine of DNA, altering their biological function. Before the treatments with selected and micropulverized plants to patients, it is necessary and required in animal models demonstrate that plants do not produce toxic effects. Using mixtures of plants micropulverized is good choice because these microparticles behave as micro-releasing their constituents with increased activity and bioavailability to target cells so it will be possible to achieve greater power to control their activity and perhaps cure the disease, and provide patients an effective herbal medicine safe, free of toxic effects and low cost.

Nowadays,a number of promising strategies are being developed that aim at combining diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities into clinically effective ***,the combination of a modified release provided by an organic encapsulation and the intrinsic physico-chemical properties from an inorganic counterpart opens new perspectives in biomedical ***,a biocompatible magnetic lipid nanocomposite vehicle was developed through an efficient,green and simple method to simultaneously incorporate magnetic nanoparticles and an anticancer drug(doxorubicin)into a natural *** theranostic performance of the final magnetic formulation was validated in vitro and in vivo,in melanoma *** systemic administration of the proposed magnetic hybrid nanocomposite carrier enhanced anti-tumoral activity through a synergistic combination of magnetic hyperthermia effects and antimitotic therapy,together with MRI reporting *** application of an alternating magnetic field was found to play a dual role,(i)acting as an extra layer of control(remote,on-demand)over the chemotherapy release and(ii)inducing a local thermal ablation of tumor *** combination of chemotherapy with thermotherapy establishes a synergistic platform for the treatment of solid malignant tumors under lower drug dosing schemes,which may realize the dual goal of reduced systemic toxicity and enhanced anti-tumoral efficacy.

The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis parasitizes many species with different life-history traits and has a detrimental effect on the survival of the progeny of the *** response,hosts have developed numerous antiparasitic ***,we examined the effects of brood parasitism by shiny cowbird on the clutch and brood sizes(83 nests)in a small host,the black-backed water tyrant Fluvicola *** also studied whether the death of parasite nestlings was related to the care of the foster parents and whether the host had any antiparasitic defense against the shiny *** results indicate that brood parasitism significantly decreased the host hatching and fledging *** majority of nest failures(57%)were caused by brood *** cowbird parasitism occurred in 52%of nests and the intensity of parasitism was 1.23±0.53 eggs per parasitized *** the total host eggs,54%were *** the incubation stage,20 nests(47%)were abandoned because of egg punctures by shiny cowbirds *** two parasitic fledglings were recorded,while the remaining nestlings either died from starvation(n=12)or predation(n=3).Foster parents abandoned parasitic nestlings between 5 and 10 days *** findings demonstrate that the shiny cowbird has very low rates of fledging success when parasitizing black-backed water ***,parasitism had a high reproductive cost in the black-backed water tyrant because a very low proportion(7%)of the parasitized nests(n=43)were successful.

Carbon nanotubes targeted to the tumor microenvironment inhibit metastasis in a preclinical model of melanoma

Despite notable progress in cancer therapy,metastatic diseases continue to be the primary cause of cancer-related ***-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)can enter tissues and cells and interfere with the dynamics of the cytoskeletal nanofilaments *** endows them with intrinsic anti-tumoral effects comparable to those of microtubule-binding chemotherapies such as Taxol®.In this study,our focus was on exploring the potential of oxidized MWCNTs in selectively targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor(VEGFR).Our objective was to evaluate their effectiveness in inhibiting metastatic growth by inducing anti-proliferative,anti-migratory,and cytotoxic effects on both cancer and tumor microenvironment *** findings demonstrated a significant reduction of over 80%in malignant melanoma lung metastases and a substantial enhancement in overall animal welfare following intravenous administration of the targeted biodegradable ***,the combination of these nanomaterials with the conventional chemotherapy agent Taxol®yielded a remarkable 90%increase in the antimetastatic *** results highlight the promising potential of this combined therapeutic approach against metastatic disease and are of paramount importance as metastasis is responsible for nearly 60,000 deaths each year.

low bone mineral density and the increased risk of fracture in gastrointestinal diseases have a multifactorial pathogenesis. Inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） has been associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia and epidemiologic studies have reported an increased prevalence of low bone mass in patients with IBD. Certainly, genetics play an important role, along with other factors such as systemic inflammation, malnutrition, hypogonadism, glucocorticoid therapy in IBD and other lifestyle factors. At a molecular level the proinflammatory cytokines that contribute to the intestinal immune response in IBD are known to enhance bone resorption. There are genes influencing osteoblast function and it is likely that lRP5 may be involved in the skeletal development. Also the identification of vitamin D receptors （VDRs） and some of its polymorphisms have led to consider the possible relationships between them and some autoimmune diseases and may be involved in the pathogenesis through the exertion of its immunomodulatory effects during inflammation. Trying to explain the physiopathology we have found that there is increasing evidence for the integration between systemic inflammation and bone loss likely mediated via receptor for activated nuclear factor kappa-B （RANK）, RANK-ligand, and osteoprotegerin, proteins that can affect both osteoclastogenesis and T-cell activation. Although glucocorticoids can reduce mucosal and systemic inflammation, they have intrinsic qualities that negatively impact on bone mass. It is still controversial if all IBD patients should be screened, especially in patients with preexisting risk factors for bone disease. Available methods to measure BMD include single energy x-ray absorptiometry, DXA, quantitative computed tomography （QCT）, radiographic absorptiometry, and *** is the establish method to determine BMD, and routinely is measured in the hip and the lumbar spine. Repeated anastomotic recurrence of colorectal tumors: Genetic analysis of two cases

AIM: To investigate genetics of two cases of colorectal tumor local recurrence and throw some light on the etiopathogenesis of anastomotic recurrence. METHODS: Two cases are presented: a 65-year-old female receiving two colonic resections for primary anastomotic recurrences within 21 mo, and a 57-year-old female undergoing two local excisions of recurrent anastomotic adenomas within 26 mo. A loss of heterozygosity (lOH) study of 25 microsatellite markers and a mutational analysis of genes BRAF , K-RAS and APC were performed in samples of neoplastic and normal colonic mucosa collected over the years. RESUlTS: A diffuse genetic instability was present in all samples, including neoplastic and normal colonic mucosa. Two different patterns of genetic alterations (lOH at 5q21 and 18p11.23 in the first case, and lOH at 1p34 and 3p14 in the second) were found to be associated with carcinogenesis over the years. A role for the genes MYC-l (mapping at 1p34) and FIHT (mapping at 3p14.2) is suggested, whereas a role for APC (mapping at 5q21) is not shown. CONClUSION: The study challenges the most credited intraluminal implantation and metachronous carcinogenesis theories, and suggests a persistent, patient-specific alteration as the trigger of colorectal cancer anastomotic recurrence.

Dear Editor, Flavonols are synthesized by flavonol synthase （FlS） enzymes （Martens et al., 2010）. These compounds absorb UV-B light in the 280-320-nm region and their concentration increases in plants exposed to environmental abiotic and biotic stresses, including UV-B; consequently, flavonols are thought to act as UV-B filters （Agati et al., 2011）. It has been also suggested that these metabolites function as reactive oxygen species （ROS） scavengers, as they contain an OH- group in the 3-position of the flavonoid skeleton, which allows them to chelate metals, inhibiting the formation of free radicals and ROS accumula- tion, once formed （Agati et al., 2009）. For these reasons, it has been suggested that flavonols play uncharacterized roles in UV responses （Verdan et al., 2011）. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the role of flavonols in UV-B protection has been inferred, the protection conferred by flavonols on the target sites of UV-B-damage has not been directly proven in planta.

A Data Mining Approach to Detecting Bias and Favoritism in Public Procurement

In a public procurement process,corruption can occur at each stage,favoring a participant with a previous agreement,which can result in over-pricing and purchases of substandard products,as well as gender *** paper’s aim is to detect biased purchases using a Spanish language corpus,ana-lyzing text from the questions and answers registry platform by applicants in a public procurement process in ***,gender bias is detected,pro-moting both men and women to participate under the same *** order to detect gender bias and favoritism towards certain providers by contracting enti-ties,the study proposes a unique hybrid model that combines Artificial Intelli-gence algorithms and Natural language Processing(NlP).In the experimental work,303,076 public procurement processes have been analyzed over 10 years(since 2010)with 1,009,739 questions and answers to suppliers and public insti-tutions in each *** bias and favoritism were analyzed using a Word2-vec model with word embedding,as well as sentiment analysis of the questions and answers using the VADER *** 32%of cases(96,984 answers),there was favoritism or gender bias as evidenced by responses from contracting *** proposed model provides accuracy rates of 88% for detecting favor-itism,and 90%for detecting gender *** one-third of the procure-ment processes carried out by the state have indications of corruption and *** latin America,government corruption is one of the most significant challenges,making the resulting classifier useful for detecting bias and favoritism in public procurement processes.
