Phacoemulsification is the main gold standard for cataract operation in the developed world together with foldable intraocular lens(IOL) implantation by injection,allowing for stable wound construction and less postoperative astigmatism. It is a safe procedure with high success rate with the advancement in machines,improvement of IOL injection systems and further maturation of surgeons’ techniques. Despite the large number of operations performed every day, foldable IOL injection leading to an intra-stromal corneal track is a very rare complication. We report a case of this unusual finding in a 70-year-old gentleman who has undergone cataract operation in November 2011 in our hospital and will review on the complications related to foldable IOL injection.

Objective To determine if there are any differences in the number of exclusions from paternity of men using an anonymous parentage testing service compared with that of men using an in-person parentage testing service provided by the same company in Hong Kong SAR of China. Methods Comparable numbers of consecutive anonymous and in-person parentage tests conducted by the same company were analyzed. Results Men using an anonymous parentage testing service were excluded from paternity at a significantly greater rate (P<0.001), compared with men using an in-person parentage test service. Conclusions The results obtained from anonymous parentage testing indicate that the number of families containing children of doubtful parentage is much greater than expected previously. As illegitimate children are known to suffer greater degrees of abuse and neglect, this finding poses serious social questions regarding the welfare of families, which the relevant authorities should acknowledge and address.

A research has been carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of composites made by hybridizing sugar palm fibre （Arenga pinnata） with glass fibre into an unsaturated polyester matrix. Hybrid composites of glass/sugar palm fibre were fabricated in different weight ratios of strand mat glass fibres ： sugar palm fibres 4：0, 4：1, 4：2, 4：3, 4：4, and 0：4. The hybrid effects of glass and sugar palm fibre on tensile, flexural and impact properties of the composites were evaluated according to ASTM D5083, ASTM D790 and ASTM D256 respectively. Results have been established that properties of hybrid glass/sugar palm composites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, toughness, flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength are a function of fibre content. The failure mechanism and the adhesion between fibres/matrix were studied by observing the scanning electron micrographs of impact fracture samples. In general, the incorporation of both fibres into unsaturated polyester matrix shows a regular trend of increase in the mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND Cetuximab in combination with oral fluoropyrimidine(FP)remains controversial in metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC).In view of the regional variation in the tolerability of FP,we conducted a retrospective analysis to compare oral FP with infusional FP in combination with cetuximab in Chinese *** To compare the efficacy and safety profile of cetuximab in combination with oral FP and infusional FP in Chinese population in the real-world *** A retrospective cohort study was done to analyse consecutive patients with Kras wild-type mCRC who received first-line treatment with cetuximab and FP-based chemotherapy in our unit from January 2010 to December ***-five eligible patients were *** median follow-up of our cohort was 65.0 *** The median progression-free survival(mPFS)and median overall survival(mOS)of the entire cohort were 9.66 mo(95%CI:7.72–12.5)and 25.8 mo(95%CI:18.7–35.6),*** oral FP and infusional FP,there was no statistical significant difference in the mPFS[9.79 mo(95%CI:7.49–12.7)vs 9.63 mo(95%CI:6.34–13.4);P=0.72]and mOS[25.8 mo(95%CI:15.2–35.6)vs 26.3 mo(95%CI:18.7–41.2);P=0.63].Grade 3 or above adverse events were reported in 28.4%of patients,being similar with oral and infusional FP,and included 10.5%of neutropenia and 2.1%of diarrhoea *** The current analysis demonstrates comparable efficacy and safety profiles of cetuximab in combination with oral and infusional FP in Chinese *** results expand treatment options for Chinese patients and invite revision of existing treatment guidelines to incorporate oral FP-based chemotherapy plus cetuximab.

Poly[R-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R-3-hydroxyvalerate)] (PHBVs) copolymers are promising biopolymers, which could substitute petroleum-based plastics for various applications. PHB and PHBV pellets were processed on a customized 3D printer via Fused Granular Manufacturing (FGM) approach modified with a Mahor screw extruder. To anticipate the behaviour of PHBVs when transformed using conventional thermo-mechanical shaping processes, thermal and mechanical analyses were carried out in order to better understand the effect of annealing temperature on their crystallization behaviour and mechanical properties of PHB polymer and PHBV copolymer. The objectives of the present work were to propose an experimental strategy to study the melting and crystallization events, crystalline structure changes, and mechanical performances of both PHB homopolymer and PHBV copolymer according to identical thermal annealing treatments. A monitoring of 3D printed PHB and PHBV structures was achieved by coupling Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests. .

This study aimed to model the kinetic of hydro-distillation of Aquilaria malaccensis leaves oil in order to understand and optimize the extraction process. In addition, this study, for the first time, aimed to identify the chemical compositions of the A. malaccensis leave-oil. By assessing both first-order kinetic model and the model of simultaneous washing and diffusion, the result indicated that the model of simultaneous washing and diffusion better describes the hydro-distillation mechanism of the essential oil from A. malaccensis *** optimum time, solid to liquid ratio, and the heating power for extracting the highest amount of essential oil were found to be around 3 h, 1:10(g·ml-1), and 300 W respectively. Yellow essential oil with a strong smell and a yield of 0.05 v/w was extracted by hydro-distillation Clevenger apparatus. Chemical compounds of the essential oil were analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy(GC/MS), which resulted in identification of 42 compounds that constitute 93% of essential oil. Among the identified components,Pentadecanal(32.082%), 9-Octadecenal,(Z)(15.894%), and Tetradecanal(6.927%) were the major *** the fact that all the identified major components possess pesticidal properties, A. malaccensis leaves can be regarded as a promising natural source for producing pesticides.

To establish a profile of the causes of apparently unexplained SS in genetic ref erral center and evaluate the current referral system Methods This was a retrospective database survey on patients who were referred our clini cal genetic service from 1988-1998 primarily because of SS We retrieved the st udy population from our computer database using "short stature" as a search han dle and then studied the demographic, clinical and laboratory data from their me dical records Results Three hundred and fifty three subjects were referred for genetic evaluation of SS in 1988-1998 The mean age of referred subjects was 11 5 years and the female to male ratio was 7 6 All referrals had undergone cytogenetic studies to exclude chromosomal abnormal ities, 19% of girls with apparently unexplained short stature had Turner syndrom e; at least 47 9% of the study population were normal variants and 25% of the referrals had inadequate information for classification Conclusions Genetic investigation is essential in the management of patients with SS, especi ally for girls suspected of having Turner syndrome, in which growth hormone trea tment has shown to improve final height We also highlight the inherited causes of short stature, which were often misdiagnosed as benign familial short statur e, and discussed the drawbacks of the current referral

Objective: A variety of ion channels have been implicated in breast cancer proliferation and *** K+(Kv) channels not only cause repolarization in excitable cells,but are also involved in multiple cellular functions in non-excitable *** this study we investigated the role of Kv channels in migration of BT474 breast cancer ***: Transwell technique was used to separate migratory cells from non-migratory ones and these two groups of cells were subject to electrophysiological examinations and microfluorimetric measurements for cytosolic *** migration was examined in the absence or presence of Kv channel ***: When compared with non-migratory cells,migratory cells had much higher Kv current densities,but rather unexpectedly,more depolarized membrane potential and reduced *** transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) analysis revealed the presence of Kv1.1,Kv1.3,Kv1.5,Kv2.1,Kv3.3,Kv3.4 and Kv4.3 *** migration was markedly inhibited by tetraethylammonium(TEA),a delayed rectifier Kv channel blocker,but not by 4-aminopyridine,an A-type Kv channel ***: Taken together,our results show that increased Kv channel expression played a role in BT474 cell migration,and Kv channels could be considered as biomarkers or potential therapeutic targets for breast cancer *** mechanism(s) by which Kv channels enhanced migration appeared unrelated to membrane hyperpolarization and Cainflux.
