Purpose: Whil. there were numerous cl.nical.exampl.s of ocul.r damage, the histopathol.gy of retinal.responses was poorl. characterized, and animal.model.research was l.mited. The consequences of retinal.l.sions with traditional.medicine treatment were mostl. unknown. In this work, gol.fish was empl.yed as a model.for penetrating injury of the eyes to study the ocul.r trauma with antibiotic and traditional.medicine treatments. Material. and Methods: The penetration of the eyes was performed at 2mm above the midl.ne of the l.mbus in the superior quadrant with an 18-gauge steril. needl., al. the way to the retina but avoiding the l.ns whil. the animal. were anaesthetized in water containing 100 mg/l.ethyl.3-aminobenzoate methanesul.onate (MS-222). The animal. were divided into three groups and received treatments of sal.ne, chl.ramphenicol. and Angong Niuhuang pil. (Angong) eyedrops twice a day respectivel.. Angong after seven days, the animal. were sacrificed. Immunohistochemical.eval.ation of prol.ferative cel. nucl.ar antigen (PCNA), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), catal.se, and cl.aved caspase-3, and terminal.deoxynucl.otidyl.transferase dUTP nick end l.bel.ng (TUNEl. for apoptotic cel.s were performed on the fish’s superior quadrants of the retinae. The whol. experiment was repeated two times. Resul.: It was evident that both the retinae treated with chl.ramphenicol.and Angong had fewer apoptotic cel.s and more prol.ferative cel.s, particul.rl. in the cases of the Angong treatment. BDNF was in the inner nucl.ar l.yer and gangl.on cel. l.yer of al. groups. In the chl.ramphenicol.and Angong groups, some cel.s in the outer nucl.ar l.yer displ.yed BDNF. Catal.se reactions confirmed equival.nt findings that the treated retinae with chl.ramphenicol.or Angong treatment had l.ss catal.se. Concl.sion: Angong Niuhuang pil. is a traditional.medicine composite formul. with antibiotic and neuroprotective effects on the brain and the eyes, and this work al.o pointed

Bioremediation of l.ad(II) from Pol.uted Wastewaters Empl.ying Sul.huric Acid Treated Maize Tassel.Biomass

The abil.ty to modify a waste by-product precursor, maize tassel.biomass using sul.uric acid as the activating agent with specific focus on l.ad(II) ion from water has been proposed. The treating of maize tassel.using sul.huric acid is bel.eved to enhance sorption capacity of l.ad(II) ions. For this, batch adsorption mode was adopted for which the effects of initial.pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial.concentration were investigated. Consequentl., it was found that the adsorbent capacity depends on pH;since it increases up to 4.5 and then decreases. The highest percentage of l.ad(II) ion removal.was achieved in the adsorbent dosage of 1.2 g and at an initial.concentration of 10 mg/l.metal.ion. In an attempt to determine the capacity and rate of l.ad(II) removal. isotherm and kinetic data were model.d using appropriate equations. To this end, the adsorption data fitted best into the l.ngmuir model.with an R2 (0.9997) whil. kinetical.y the l.ad(II) adsorption fol.owed the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, as a way to address issues rel.ted to sustainabil.ty, maize tassel.is recommended since the process is considered to be a dual.sol.tion for environmental.cl.aning. From one side, it represents a better way to dispose the maize tassel.which has no use after fertil.zation and on the other hand it is an economic source of carbonaceous material..

Contributing to a Heal.hy Ol.er Popul.tion of the Future: Investigating the Dail. Wal.ing Steps of Working Adul.s in Hong Kong

Devel.ping a heal.hy l.festyl. during adul.hood is one of the essential.factors to prepare for heal.hy aging. This cross-sectional.descriptive study investigated the dail. wal.ing steps of 893 working adul.s from nine occupation categories in Hong Kong. Their dail. wal.ing steps were measured using a pedometer. Anal.sis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the difference in dail. wal.ing steps between participants in different occupation category. Chi-square test was used to compare the difference in proportion of working adul.s in each occupation category who wal.ed and did not wal. 10,000 steps per day. Resul.s reveal.that the participants in average wal.ed 8661 steps per day. “Pl.nt and machine operators and assembl.rs” and “cl.rks” were the two l.ast active groups. Participants from the nine occupation categories demonstrated a significant difference in the number of dail. wal.ing steps. Post hoc anal.sis reveal.d a significant difference between “pl.nt and machine operators and assembl.rs” and “service workers and shop sal.s workers” (p l. as between “pl.nt and machine operators and assembl.rs” and “craft and rel.ted workers” (p l.o demonstrated a significant difference in the proportion of those who wal.ed and did not wal. 10,000 steps per day. Owing to a l.rge difference in number of participants in the nine occupation categories and other study l.mitations, further systematic investigation is indicated to confirm the study resul.s. To summarize, working adul.s in Hong Kong are onl. somewhat active. Identifying the factors that deter the working adul.s from wal.ing and the ways to promote wal.ing among working adul.s is necessary to prepare a heal.hy ol.er popul.tion of the future.

The Effect of a Visual.Memory Training Program on Chinese Handwriting Performance of Primary School.Students with Dysl.xia in Hong Kong

This study investigated the effect of a visual.memory training program on Chinese handwriting performance among primary school.students with dysl.xia in Hong Kong. Eight students of Grade 2 to 3 who were diagnosed with dysl.xia were recruited. Al. participants received six sessions of training, which composed of 30-minute computerized game-based visual.memory training and 30-minute Chinese character segmentation training. Visual.perceptual.skil.s and Chinese handwriting performance were assessed before and after the training, as wel. as three weeks after training using the Test of Visual.Perceptual.Skil.s (3rd edition) (TVPS-3) and the Chinese Handwriting Anal.sis System (CHAS). In comparing the pre- and post-training resul.s, paired t-tests reveal.d significant improvements in visual.memory skil.s, as wel. as handwriting speed, pause time and pen pressure after the training. There was no significant improvement in handwriting accuracy or l.gibil.ty. The improved visual.memory and handwriting performance did not show a significant drop at the fol.ow-up assessments. This study showed promising resul.s on a structured program to improve the Chinese handwriting performance, mainl. in speed, of primary school.chil.ren. The improvements appeared to be wel.-sustained after the training program. There is a need to further study the l.ng-term effect of the program through a randomized control.ed trial.study.

AIM: To discuss the advantages of ul.ra-high fiel. (7T) for 1H and 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies of ***: Measurements of brain metabol.tes were made at both 3 and 7T using 1H MRS. Measurements of gl.cogen and l.pids in muscl. were measured using 13C and 1H MRS ***: In the brain, increased signal.to-noise ratio (SNR) and dispersion al.ows spectral.separation of the amino-acids gl.tamate, gl.tamine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), without the need for sophisticated editing sequences. Improved quantification of these metabol.tes is demonstrated at 7T rel.tive to 3T. SNR was 36% higher, and measurement repeatabil.ty (% coefficients of variation) was 4%, 10% and 10% at 7T, vs 8%, 29% and 21% at 3T for gl.tamate, gl.tamine and GABA respectivel.. Measurements at 7T were used to compare metabol.te l.vel. in the anterior cingul.te cortex (ACC) and insul.. Creatine and gl.tamate l.vel. were found to be significantl. higher in the insul. compared to the ACC (P l., the increased SNR and spectral.resol.tion at 7T enabl.s interl.aved studies of gl.cogen (13C) and intra-myocel.ul.r l.pid (IMCl. and extra-myocel.ul.r l.pid (EMCl. (1H) fol.owing exercise and re-feeding. Gl.cogen l.vel. were significantl. decreased fol.owing exercise (-28% at 50% VO2 max; -58% at 75% VO2 max). Interestingl., l.vel. of gl.cogen in the hamstrings fol.owed those in the quadriceps, despite reduce exercise l.ading. No changes in IMCl.and EMCl.were found in the ***: The demonstrated improvements in brain and muscl. MRS measurements at 7T wil. increase the potential.for use in investigating human metabol.sm and changes due to pathol.gies.
