1,4-Naphthoquinones (NQ) is a class of organic compounds with a number of important properties. However, the existing methods of their synthesis either give a low NQ yield or multistage and require a lot of time. In the present work new one-pot process of NQ synthesis from hydroquinone (HQ) and substituted 1,3-dienes at room temperature is proposed. The solution of heteropolyacid H7PMo8V4O40 (HPA-4) is used as a bifunctional (acid and redox) catalyst for this process. The influence of a number of factors on key process parameters has been studied. It is demonstrated that unsubstituted and a number of alkyl substituted NQ with the yields of 50% - 80% and purity of 92% - 99% can be obtained by this method. The results obtained allow to significantly simplify the synthesis of NQ directly from HQ in comparison with the described similar methods.

Facet Joints Involvement in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: It has been accepted amongst rheumatologists that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) does not involve the facet joints (FJs) of the spine;nevertheless, the issue is still under debate. Objective: To compare the prevalence of FJs’ changes between patients with RA and age- and sex-matched peers. Methods: CT scans of 34 patients with RA suffering from low back pain (LBP) were compared with 70 age- and sex-matched controls (individuals without RA, suffering from LBP) in a case-control study. The degenerative changes in the FJs were evaluated (i.e., joint space narrowing, marginal osteophytes, articular process hypertrophy, subchondral sclerosis, inter-joint vacuum phenomenon, and subchondral cysts), in addition to the marginal erosions, the most characteristic feature of joint change in RA. Disease activity characteristics (CRP, ESR, DAS-28, SDAI, and CDAI), duration of RA, age, and sex were obtained from patients’ clinical charts. Results: The prevalence of FJs’ changes in patients with RA and age- and sex-matched controls were not significantly different at any spinal level or in a total L1-S1 score. Marginal erosions, a characteristic feature of joint changes in RA, were not found in any of our RA subjects. No difference was found in disease parameters and markers in individuals with RA with affected FJs and those without. The occurrence of FJs’ changes amongst subjects with RA demonstrated no correlation with disease duration and activity. Conclusions: FJs of the lumbar spine are not involved in the inflammatory process of RA, and their LBP is not due to inflammation in FJs of the spine.

This article is concerned with analyzes of experience of Technopark ＂Novosibirsk＂ as an important part of the innovation infrastructure of the Novosibirsk region. In this article the authors are formulated priorities for the development of an innovative economy： The promotion of investment growth in production infrastructure and innovation, increasing the orientation of research institutions to the needs of the real economy, the development of entrepreneurship in all sectors of the economy and the creation of necessary conditions. The article considers the key elements of innovation infrastructure. Also program ＂Development of high-tech industry and which Technopark ＂Novosibirsk＂ implements the this article is given a brief description of the complex target innovation in the industry to the city of Novosibirsk in 2020＂, in concept of technopark of distributed type, when the Technopark is built in the form of structural and autonomous innovation and technology centers established by the territorial-branch principle in conjunction with partner organizations. The analysis of the stories of success （and failure） of residents of Technopark is described in this article. Based on this analysis, which highlights the main factors contributing to the achievement of commercially meaningful results. These include training as an essential component of the innovation infrastructure. Describes the international educational programs implemented by the Innovative Technology Center ＂Education＂ at the Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management. It is noted that the most important result of the operation of Technopark ＂Novosibirsk＂ was working out a model of public-private partnership that has allowed Technopark flourish, creating a network of specialized centers of innovation and technology. We formulated and analyzed a novel nanoformulation of the anticancer drug cisplatin （Cis） with C60 fullerene （C60＋Cis complex） and showed its higher toxicity toward tumor cell lines in vitro when compared to Cis alone. The highest toxicity of the complex was observed in HL-60/adr and HL-60/vinc chemotherapy- resistant human leukemia cell sublines （resistant to Adriamycin and Vinculin, respectively）. We discovered that the action of the C60＋Cis complex is associated with overcoming the drug resistance of the tumor cell lines through observing an increased number of apoptotic cells in the Annexin V/PI assay. Moreover, in vivo assays with Lewis lung carcinoma （LLC） C57BL/6J male mice showed that the C60＋Cis complex increases tumor growth inhibition, when compared to Cis or C60 fullerenes alone. Simultaneously, we conducted a molecular docking study and performed an Ames test. Molecular docking specifies the capability of a C60 fullerene to form van der Waals interactions with potential binding sites on P-glycoprotein （P-gp）, multidrug resistance protein 1 （MRP-1）, and multidrug resistance protein 2 （MRP-2） molecules. The observed phenomenon revealed a possible mechanism to bypass tumor cell drug resistance by the C60＋Cis complex. Additionally, the results of the Ames test show that the formation of such a complex diminishes the Cis mutagenic activity and may reduce the probability of secondary neoplasm formation. In conclusion, the C60＋Cis complex effectively induced tumor cell death in vitro and inhibited tumor growth in vivo, overcoming drug resistance likely by the potential of the C60 fullerene to interact with P-gp, MRP-1, and MRP-2 molecules. Thus, the C60＋Cis complex might be a potential novel chemotherapy modification.

The Addition of Midazolam Reduces the Incidence of Early Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting in Short Time Gynecological Procedures

Background: If untreated, one third of patients who undergo surgery develop postoperative nausea and/or vomiting (PONV). The prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting can improve satisfaction among vulnerable patients. We hypothesized that preoperative anxiety may increase the incidence of PONV. The objective was to assess whether administration of a benzodiazepine prior to surgery would reduce the incidence of PONV. Methods: 130 women (ASA I and II) scheduled to undergo dilatation and curettage comprised the study group. The women were allocated randomly to two study groups according to the type of anesthesia administered (with and without midazolam). Results: Sixty-eight women received midazolam and 62 did not. Patients treated with midazolam were feeling more comfortable (“friendliness”, p = 0.005 and “elation”, p = 0.01) and had less postoperative fatigue (p = 0.04) than non-midazolam-treated group. Patients treated with midazolam had significantly fewer emetic episodes during the first 4 hours after surgery than those without midazolam (0.1 ± 0.2 vs 0.3 ± 0.6, respectively, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Midazolam reduces the incidence of PONV and improves patient’s comfort. We suggest that midazolam has to be routinely included in the anesthesia protocol for short-term gynecological procedures (dilatation and curettage).

Extending the Truncated Dyson-Schwinger Equation to Finite Temperatures

In view of the properties of mesons in hot strongly interacting matter, the properties of the solutions of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator at finite temperatures within the rainbow-ladder approximation are analysed in some detail. In Euclidean space within the Matsubara imaginary time formalism, the quark propagator is not longer a O(4) symmetric function and possesses a discrete spectrum of the fourth component of the momentum. This makes the treatment of the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations conceptually different from the vacuum and technically much more involved. The question whether the interaction kernel known from vacuum calculations can be applied at finite temperatures remains still open. We find that, at low temperatures, the model interaction with vacuum parameters provides a reasonable description of the quark propagator, while at temperatures higher than a certain critical value Tc the interaction requires stringent modifications. The general properties of the quark propagator at finite temperatures can be inferred from lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations. We argue that, to achieve a reasonable agreement of the model calculations with that from LQCD, the kernel is to be modified in such a way as to screen the infra-red part of the interaction at temperatures larger than Tc . For this, we analyse the solutions of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation with existing interaction kernels in a large temperature range with particular attention on high temperatures in order to find hints to an adequate temperature dependence of the interaction kernel to be further implemented in the Bethe-Salpeter equation for mesons. This will allow investigating the possible in medium modifications of the meson properties as well as the conditions of quark deconfinement in hot matter.
