Nonlinear analysis of pile load-settlement behavior in layered soil

A simplified approach is presented to analyze the single pile settlement in multilayered soil. First, a fictitious soil-pile model is employed to consider the effect of layered soil beneath pile toe on pile settlement behavior. Two approximation methods are proposed to simplify the nonlinear load transfer function and simulate the nonlinear compression of fictitious soil-pile, respectively. On this basis, an efficient program is developed. The procedures for determining the main parameters of mathematical model are discussed. comparisons with two well-documented field experimental pile loading tests are conducted to verify the rationality of the present method. Further studies are also made to evaluate the practicability of the proposed approach when a soft substratum exists, and the results suggest that the proposed method can provide a constructive means for assessing the settlement of a single pile for use in engineering design.

Signal transduction pathways activated by receptor tyrosine kinases （RTK） play a critical role in many aspects of cell function. Adaptor proteins serve an important scaffolding function that facilitates key signaling transduction events downstream of RTKs. Recent work integrating both structural and functional genomic approaches has identified several adaptor proteins as new oncogenes. In this review, we locus on the discovery, structure and function, and therapeutic implication of three of these adaptor oncogenes. cRKL. GAB2, and FRS2. Each of the three genes is recurrently amplified in lung adenocarcinoma or ovarian cancer, and is essential to cancer cell lines that harbor such amplification. Overexpression of each gene is able to transform immortalized human cell lines in in vitro or in vivo models. These observations identify adaptor protein as a distinct class of oncogenes and potential therapeutic targets.

Application of engineered compressible inclusions to mitigating soilstructure interaction issues in integral bridge abutments

The thermally induced cyclic loading on integral bridge abutments causes soil deformation and lateral stress ratcheting behind the abutment wall due to the expansion and contraction of the bridge *** forward and backward movements of the abutment in response to the expansion/contraction of the bridge deck lead to the formation of settlement trough and surface heaving,frequently creating a bump at the bridge approach and increasing the lateral earth pressure behind the *** to reduce the bump at the bridge approach,including several treatment methods,such as compaction of selected backfill materials,grout injection,installation of approach slab,and using a layer of compressible inclusion material behind the abutment were ***,these guidelines still lack sufficient design details and there are limited experimental findings to validate design *** this paper,the use of engineered compressible materials to alleviate the lateral earth pressure ratcheting and settlement at the bridge approach is *** comparative study is presented for the soil-inclusion,material-structure and soil-structure interactions for an integral bridge under three different backfill conditions,i.e.(a)sand,(b)sand and EPS geofoam,and(c)sand and Infinergy®.The study was conducted in a special large-scale test chamber with a semi-scale abutment to gain better insights into the soil-structure interaction(SSI).The kinematics and rearrangement of the soil during the cyclic loading have been investigated to identify the mitigating effects of compressible *** comparative study indicates that both compressible inclusions perform comparatively well,however,Infinergy®is a better alternative than the medium-density EPS geofoam,as it works more effectively to reduce the backfill settlement and heaving as well as soil ratcheting effects under cyclic translational movement.

Preserving the literary past, looking to the future: the first hong Kong Literature Database

In the last two decades of the 20th century, there has been an increasing interest in and emphasis on the study of the hong Kong literature in both the academic and general public in hong Kong. Recognizing the emergent need of the resources on hong Kong literature, the University Library System of the chinese University of hong Kong set up the hong Kong Literature Database (the “Database”), which was the first chinese literature database in the Internet in 2000. The paper will examine how the database is constructed using XML technology and metadata schema. The database also employs Unicode UTF-8 as the internal code. A mapping table for traditional and simplified chinese characters was created based on Unihan and is used behind the scene so that a user can either input traditional or simplified chinese characters and retrieval will give both traditional and simplified chinese characters. currently 65% of journals use OcR technology so that full-text searching is possible. The chinese OcR technology will be examined in greater detail. Special features of the Database such as, page-by-page browse mode, posi- tion-highlight for full-page newspaper, linking Table-Of-contents and book jackets from the Library catalogue, etc. are described. The paper will also bring out the problem of massive downloading and compare the state-of-the-art technology and their short- comings. This paper shows how the hong Kong Literature Database facilitates future collaboration and data exchange by using open standard, shareable structure and the latest technology.
