AIM： To investigate the anti-cancer mechanisms of Korean mistletoe lectin （Viscum album coloratura agglutinin, VCA） using a human colon cancer cell line （COLO）. METHODS： Cytotoxic effects of VCA on COLO cells were determined by 3-（4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl）-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide （MTI-） assay in vitro and tumor-killing effects in vivo. To study the mechanisms involved, the expression of various pro-caspases, anti- apoptotic proteins, and death receptors was determined by western blot. To determine which death receptor is involved in VCA-induced apoptosis of COLO cells, cytotoxicity was examined by MTT assay after treatment with agonists or antagonists of death receptors. RESULTS： VCA killed COLO cells in a time- and dosedependent manner and induced complete regression of tumors in nude mice transplanted with COLO cells. Treatment of COLO cells with VCA activated caspase-2, -3, -8, and -9 and decreased expression of anti-apoptotic molecules including receptor interacting protein, nuclear factor-κB, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein, and Akt/protein kinase B. We then examined the involvement of death receptors in VCA-induced apoptosis. Only tumor necrosis factor receptor 1, among the death receptors examined, was involved in apoptosis of COLO cells, evidenced by inhibition of VCA-induced apoptosis and decreased activation of caspases, particularly caspase-8, by tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 antagonizing ***： VCA-induced apoptotic COLO cell death is due to the activation of caspases and inhibition of antiapoptotic proteins, in part through the tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 signaling pathway.

Prominent cycling reversibility and kinetics enabled by CaTiO3 protective layer on Zn metal for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries （AZIBs） have received considerable attention owing to their various advantages such as safety,low cost,simple battery assembly conditions,and high ionic ***,they still suffer from serious problems,including uncontrollable dendrite growth,corrosion,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） from water decomposition,electrode passivation,and unexpected *** creation of a uniform artificial nanocrystal layer on the Zn anode surface is a promising strategy for resolving these ***,we propose the use of a perovskite CaTiO3（CTO） protective layer on Zn（CTO@Zn） as a promising approach for improving the performance of *** CTO artificial layer provides an efficient pathway for Zn ion diffusion towards the Zn metal because of the high dielectric constant （εr=180） and ferroelectric characteristics that enable the alignment of dipole moments and redistribute the Zn2+ions in the CTO *** avoiding the direct contact of the Zn anode with the electrolyte solution,the uneven dendrite growth,corrosion,parasitic side reactions,and HER are mitigated,while CTO retains its mechanical and chemical robustness during ***,CTO@Zn demonstrates an improved lifespan in a symmetric cell configuration compared with bare ***@Zn shows steady overpotential （～68 m V） for 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2,excelling bare ***,when paired with the V2O5-C cathode,the CTO@Zn//V2O5-C full battery delivers 148.4 mA h g-1（based on the mass of the cathode） after 300 *** study provides new insights into Zn metal anodes and the development of high-performance AZIBs.

Evaluation of properties of concrete using fluosilicate salts and metal (Ni,W) compounds

To improve watertightness and antibiosis of sewage structure concrete, the antimicrobial watertight admixture was made with fluosilicate salts and antimicrobial compounds. And fresh properties, watertightness, harmlessness and antibiosis of concrete were investigated experimentally. As a result, the fresh properties of concrete were similar to those of an ordinary concrete, without setting time delay. Compressive strength and carbonation resistance of concrete were better than those of an ordinary concrete. Finally it was confirmed that the antimicrobial watertight admixture of concrete had an antibiosis inhibiting SOB growth.

SUPPRESSION OF DEFECTIVE DATA ARTIFACTS FOR DEBLURRING IMAGES CORRUPTED BY RANDOM VALUED NOISE

For deblurring images corrupted by random valued noise, two-phase methods first select likely-to-be reliables （data that are not corrupted by random valued noise） and then deblur images only with selected data. Two-phase methods, however, often cause defective data artifacts, which are mixed results of missing data artifacts caused by the lack of data and noisy data artifacts caused mainly by falsely selected outliers （data that are corrupted by random valued noise）. In this paper, to suppress these defective data artifacts, we propose a blurring model based reliable-selection technique to select reliables as many as possible to make all of to-be-recovered pixel values to contribute to selected data, while excluding outliers as accurately as possible. We also propose a normalization technique to compensate for non-uniform rates in recovering pixel values. We conducted simulation studies on Gaussian and diagonal deblurring to evaluate the performance of proposed techniques. Simulation results showed that proposed techniques improved the performance of two-phase methods, by suppressing defective data artifacts effectively.

Groundwater contamination and natural attenuation capacity at a petroleum spilled facility in Korea

As a remedial option, the natural attenuation capacity of a petroleum contaminated groundwater at a military facility was examined. Hydrogeological conditions, such as high water level, permeable uppermost layer and frequent heavy rainfall, were favorable to natural attenuation at this site. The changes in the concentrations of electron acceptors and donors, as well as the relevant hydrochemical conditions, indicated the occurrence of aerobic respiration, denitrification, iron reduction, manganese reduction and sulfate reduction. The calculated BTEX expressed biodegradation capacity ranged between 20.52 and 33.67 mg/L, which appeared effective for the reduction of the contaminants levels. The contribution of each electron accepting process to the total biodegradation was in the order： denitrification 〉 iron reduction 〉 sulfate reduction 〉 aerobic respiration 〉 manganese reduction. The BTEX and benzene point attenuation rates were 0.0058-0.0064 and 0.0005-0.0032 day-1, respectively, and the remediation time was 0.7-1.2 and 2.5-30 years, respectively. The BTEX and benzene bulk attenuation rates were 8.69 × 10^-4 and 1.05 × 10^-3 day-l, respectively, and the remediation times for BTEX and benzene were 7.2 and 17.5 years, respectively. However, most of the natural attenuation occurring in this site can be attributed to dilution and dispersion. Consequently, the biodegradation and natural attenuation capacities were good enough to lower the contaminants levels, but their rates appeared to be insufficient to reach the remediation goal within a reasonable time frame. Therefore, some active remedial measures would be required.

Emotional inference by means of Choquet integral and λ-fuzzy measurement in consideration of ambiguity of human mentality

Research on human emotions has started to address psychological aspects of human nature and has advanced to the point of designing various models that represent them quantitatively and systematically. Based on the findings, a method is suggested for emotional space formation and emotional inference that enhance the quality and maximize the reality of emotion-based personalized services. In consideration of the subjective tendencies of individuals, AHP was adopted for the quantitative evaluation of human emotions, based on which an emotional space remodeling method is suggested in reference to the emotional model of Thayer and Plutchik, which takes into account personal emotions. In addition, Sugeno fuzzy inference, fuzzy measures, and Choquet integral were adopted for emotional inference in the remodeled personalized emotional space model. Its performance was evaluated through an experiment. Fourteen cases were analyzed with 4.0 and higher evaluation value of emotions inferred, for the evaluation of emotional similarity, through the case studies of 17 kinds of emotional inference methods. Matching results per inference method in ten cases accounting for 71% are confirmed. It is also found that the remaining two cases are inferred as adjoining emotion in the same section. In this manner, the similarity of inference results is verified.

Influences of the Welding Heat Input and the Repeated Repair Welding on Ti–3Al–2.5V Titanium Alloy

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effects of gas tungsten arc welding heat input on the high-temperature tensile properties, toughness, and microstructural features of titanium alloy Ti-3A1-2.5V. The secondary objective was to examine the effect of the repeated repair welding on the properties of the alloy. It was also found that the mechanical properties progressively decreased with increasing the repair welding cycles, especially in the case of the weldment after the first welding repair. It was observed that the sizes of the acicular and prior β grain boundaries as well as the volume fraction of the acicular phases increased with increasing the welding heat input. In addition, the amount and size of the acicular a1 phases were found to increase with increasing the repair welding cycles.

Enhanced KOCED Routing Protocol with K-means Algorithm

Replacing or recharging batteries in the sensor nodes of a wireless sensor network(WSN)is a significant ***,efficient power utilization by sensors is a critical requirement,and it is closely related to the life span of the *** a sensor node consumes all its energy,it will no longer function ***,various protocols have been proposed to minimize the energy consumption of sensors and thus prolong the network ***,clustering algorithms combined with artificial intelligence have been proposed for this *** particular,various protocols employ the K-means clustering algorithm,which is a machine learning *** number of clustering configurations required by the K-means clustering algorithm is greater than that required by the hierarchical ***,the selection of the cluster heads considers only the residual energy of the nodes without accounting for the transmission distance to the base *** terms of energy consumption,the residual energy of each node,the transmission distance,the cluster head location,and the central relative position within the cluster should be considered *** this paper,we propose the KOCED(K-means with Optimal clustering for WSN considering Centrality,Energy,and Distance)protocol,which considers the residual energy of nodes as well as the distances to the central point of the cluster and the base station.A performance comparison shows that the KOCED protocol outperforms the LEACH protocol by 259%(223 rounds)for first node dead(FND)and 164%(280 rounds)with 80%alive nodes.

STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR OF AN ANTI-PLANE CRACK PARALLEL TO THE WEAK/MICRO-DISCONTINUOUS INTERFACE IN A BI-FGM COMPOSITE

The problem considered is a mode Ⅲ crack lying parallel to the interface of an exponential-type functional graded material （FGM） strip bonded to a linear-type FGM substrate with infinite thickness. By applying the Fourier integral transform, the problem was reduced as a Cauchy singular integral equation with an unknown dislocation density function. The collocation method based on Chebyshev polynomials proposed by Erdogan and Gupta was used to solve the singular integral equation numerically. With the numerical solution, the effects of the geometrical and physical parameters on the stress intensity factor （SIF） were analyzed and the following conclusions were drawn：（a） The region affected by the interface or free surface varies with the material rigidity, and higher material rigidity will lead to bigger affected region. （b） The SIF of the crack in the affected region and parallel to the micro-discontinuous interface is lower than those of the weak discontinuous cases. Reducing the weak-discontinuity of the interface will be beneficial to decrease the SIF of the interface-parallel crack in the region affected by the interface. （c） The effect of the free surface on SIF is more remarkable than that of the interface, and the latter is still more notable than that of the material rigidity. When the effects of the interface and free surface are fixed, increase of the material rigidity will enhance the value of SIF.
