Knowledge of soil seed banks is essential to understand the dynamics of plant populations and communities and would greatly benefit from the integration of existing knowledge on ecological correlations of seed size and shape. The present study aims to establish a feasible and meaningful method to describe size-number distributions of seeds in multi-species situations. For that purpose, size-number distributions of seeds with known length, width and thickness were determined by sequential sieving. The most appropriate combination of sieves and seeds dimensions was established, and the adequacy of the power function and the Weibull model to describe size-number distributions of spherical, non-spherical, and all seeds was investigated. We found that the geometric mean of seed length, width and thickness was the most adequate size estimator, providing shape-independent measures of seeds volume directly related to sieves mesh side, and that both the power function and the Weibull model provide high quality descriptions of size-number distributions of spherical, non-spherical, and all seeds. We also found that, in spite of its slightly lower accuracy, the power function is, at this stage, a more trustworthy model to characterize size-number distributions of seeds in soil banks because in some Weibull equations the estimates of the scale parameter were not acceptable.

关于热带雨林(对火敏感)和开放地层(耐火)之间边界所涉及过程的认识对于保护生物多样性和生态系统服务至关重要,尤其是在气候变化和人为压力增加的情况下。本文调查了位于巴西东南部的Espinhaco生物圈保护区内的森林岛屿和湿润草原同时出现的主要环境因素。我们使用Costa(2018)布置的永久样地来收集森林岛屿的土壤变量(水分和化学性质)。对于湿润草原的采样,我们从岛屿边缘沿不同方向设置了4条30m的线。随后,我们在每条线上划了3个点,每个点相距10m,每个区域共12个点。我们还调查了处理火烧前后的植被覆盖情况,并对环境变量进行均值检验和主成分分析。研究结果显示,森林岛屿土壤中钾、盐基总量、阳离子交换容量和有机质的值均高于湿润草地。因此,两种植被类型之间的边界定义似乎主要与土壤肥力和水分梯度有关。在对这些地区进行火烧处理后,在岛屿边缘附近没有发现树木个体的再生。因此,这些研究结果表明,由于明确的土壤气候条件,森林岛屿无法扩张。因此,这些环境应该成为设计公共保护政策的目标焦点,因为它们增加了山地岩石草原植被景观的复杂性。

Modified substrates as outer heterogeneous catalysts was employed to reduce the soot generated from incomplete combustion of diesel or diesel/biodiesel blends, a process that harms the environment and public health. The unique storage properties of ceria （CeO2） makes it one of the most efficient catalysts available to date. Here, we proposed that ceria-based catalysts can lower the temperature at which soot combustion occurs; more specifically, from 610℃ to values included in the diesel exhausts operation range （300-450℃）. The sol-gel method was used to synthesize mixed oxide-based catalysts （CeO2：ZnO）; the resulting catalysts were deposited onto cordierite substrates. In addition, the morphological and structural properties of the material were evaluated by XRD, BET, TPR-H2, and SEM. Thermogravimetric （TG/DTA） analysis revealed that the presence of the catalyst decreased the soot combustion temperature by 200℃ on average, indicating that the oxygen species arise at low temperatures in this situation, promoting highly reactive oxidation reactions. Comparative analysis of soot emission by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy （DRS） showed that catalyst-impregnated cordierite samples efficiently oxidized soot in a diesel/biodiesel stationary motor： soot emission decreased by more than 70%.

Recent evidence suggests that Brazilian Cerrado has been largely converted, mainly due to agribusiness activities and urbanization. Thus, the present work aimed to obtain the diagnosis of a watershed characterized by the expansion of sugar cane fields in the Brazilian Cerrado (Southeastern), employing integrity landscape indicators (Hemeroby, Urbanity Index, Landscape Vulnerability Index, and Water Quality Index) to verify the landscape naturalness, and the consequences of these actions to the ecosystem services provision. Remote sensing data for the years 1998, 2008, and 2018 were employed to verify the land-use changes in the Feijão River watershed (southeastern Brazil), as well as a matrix that considers the land use typologies and their capability to provide ecosystem services. The study area is classified as mixed land use, with the main categories related to agribusiness (sugar cane, pasture, bare soil). The Hemeroby and Urban Index denote naturalness declines over the years, and the observed patterns negatively impact ecosystem service provision. Landscape Vulnerability Index and Water Quality Index demonstrated that remaining vegetation cannot effectively retain pollutants, and severe impairments in the resilience of natural components of key ecosystem service providers (i.e. water and native vegetation) were observed. The results allowed the identification of priority areas for recovery and the maintenance of ecosystem services in agricultural lands.

This review updates original data describing the experiments showing the complement origin of anaphylatoxins unexplainable submerged under the surface of the articles related to the subject. Next, recalls subsequent data describing the anaphylatoxins peptide nature and sequences, the cell receptors with which they interact and activate and the outcome of the cell responses. The review continues by highlighting the anaphylatoxin biological properties focusing on the unequivocal participation of these mediators in inflammation. The review concludes bringing data reinforcing the promising use of these peptides as molecular primers to create specific and efficient pharmacological antagonists.
