Whereas a rich literature exists for estimating population genetic divergence, metrics of phenotypic trait divergence are lacking, particularly for comparing multiple traits among three or more populations. Here, we review and analyze via simula- tion Hedges＇ g, a widely used parametric estimate of effect size. Our analyses indicate that g is sensitive to a comb.nation of unequal trait variances and unequal sample sizes among populations and to changes in the scale of measurement. We then go on to derive and explain a new, non-parametric distance measure, ＇Aft＇, which is caiculated b.sed upon a joint cumulative distrib.tion function （CDF） from all populations under study. More precisely, distances are measured in terms of the percentiles in this CDF at which each population＇s median lies. Ap comb.nes many desirab.e features of other distance metrics into a single metric; namely, compared to other metrics, p is relatively insensitive to unequal variances and sample sizes among the populations sam- pied. Furthermore, a key feature of Ap--and our main motivation for developing it--is that it easily accommodates simultaneous comparisons of any numb.r of traits across any numb.r of populations. To exemplify its utility, we employ Ap to address a ques- tion related to the role of sexual selection in speciation： are sexual signals more divergent than ecological traits in closely related taxa？ Using traits of known function in closely related populations, we show that traits predictive of reproductive performance are indeed, more divergent and more sexually dimorphic than traits related to ecological adaptation [Current Zoology 58 （3）： 426-439 2012].

Introduction: The level of knowledge and attitude of health professionals ab.ut b.east cancer are important determinants. General ob.ective: To study the knowledge, attitude and practice of health professionals of the hospital of the district of the commune IV on b.east cancer. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional, prospective, descriptive, qualitative and quantitative study. The study period was from 01 Octob.r 2022 to Decemb.r 2022. Results: In one week of survey, 110 health workers (intern, ob.tetrician nurse, general practitioners and specialists) received the survey sheet, 80 health workers informed it, a participation rate of 73%. The male sex was most represented at 63.75% with a sex ratio of 1.76. The average age was 39.59 years with extremes of 22 and 61 years. The clinical signs evoked b. the participants were: b.east nodule (81.25%), followed b. b.east discharge (48.75%). In relation to risk factors: interns and ob.tetrician nurses had no good knowledge, 51.72% of general practitioners had good knowledge, 43.48% of specialist doctors had good knowledge, and 5.88% of the wise had good knowledge. Conclusion: b.east cancer is a common pathology around the world, health professionals are at the forefront of the fight against b.east cancer, and this fight cannot b. effective without trained personnel.

Olfactory receptor gene evolution is unusually rapid across Tetrapoda and outpaces chemosensory phenotypic change

Chemosensation is the most ub.quitous sense in animals,enacted b. the products of complex gene families that detect environmental chemical cues and larger-scale sensory structures that process these *** there is a general conception that olfactory receptor(OR)genes evolve rapidly,the universality of this phenomenon across verteb.ates,and its magnitude,are *** supposed correlation b.tween molecular rates of chemosensory evolution and phenotypic diversity of chemosensory systems is largely *** comb.ne comparative genomics and sensory morphology to test whether OR genes and olfactory phenotypic traits evolve at faster rates than other genes or *** pub.ished genomes,we identified ORs in 21 tetrapods,including amphib.a ns,reptiles,b.rds,and mammals and compared their rates of evolution to those of orthologous non-OR protein-coding *** found that,for all clades investigated,most OR genes evolve nearly an order of magnitude faster than other protein-coding genes,with many OR genes showing signatures of diversifying selection across nearly all taxa in this *** rapid rate of evolution suggests that chemoreceptor genes are in "evolutionary overdrive,"perhaps evolving in response to the ever-changing chemical space of the *** ob.ain complementary morphological data,we stained whole fixed specimens with iodine,μCT-scanned the specimens,and digitally segmented chemosensory and nonchemosensory b.ain *** then estimated phenotypic variation within traits and among *** we found considerab.e variation in chemosensory structures,they were no more diverse than nonchemosensory *** suggest chemoreceptor genes evolve quickly in reflection of an ever-changing chemical space,whereas chemosensory phe no types and processing regions are more conserved b.cause they use a standardized or constrained architecture to receive and process a range of chemical cues.

Folate and vitamin b.2 in idiopathic male infertility

Although methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, a folate enzyme gene, has b.en associated with idiopathic male infertility, few studies have examined other folate-related metab.lites and genes. We investigated whether idiopathic male infertility is associated with variants in folate, vitamin b.2 （b.2） and total homocysteine （tHcy）-related genes and measured these metab.lites in b.ood. We conducted a case-control study that included 153 men with idiopathic infertility and 184 fertile male controls recruited at the Fertility Center and Antenatal Care Center, University Hospital, Malmo and Lund, Sweden. Serum folate, red cell folate （RCF）, serum b.2, plasma tHcy and semen quality were measured. Sub.ects were genotyped for 20 common variants in 12 genes related to folate/b.2/ homocysteine metab.lism. Metab.lite concentrations and genotype distrib.tions were compared b.tween cases and controls using linear and logistic regression with adjustment for covariates. The phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase （PEMT） M 175V and TCb.R rs173665 polymorphisms were significantly associated with infertility （P=0.01 and P=0.009, respectively）, b.t not with semen quality. Among non-users of supplements, infertile men had lower serum folate concentrations than fertile men （12.89 vs. 14.73 nmoll^- 1 P=0.02）, b.t there were no significant differences in RCF, b.12 or tHcy. Folate, b.12 and tHcy concentrations were not correlated with any semen parameters. This study provides little support for low folate or b.2 status in the pathogenesis of idiopathic male infertility. Although additional data are needed to confirm these initial findings, our results suggest that PEMTand TCb.R, genes involved in choline and b.2 metab.lism, merit further investigation in idiopathic male infertility.
