Effect of best management practice implementation on sediment and phosphorus load reductions at subwatershed and watershed scale using SWAT model

Identification of areas contributing disproportionately high amount of pollutants(i.e.,critical source areas(CSAs)) to streams is important to efficiently and effectively target best management practices(BmPs).Process-based models are commonly used to identify CSAs and evaluate the impact of alternative management practices on pollutant load *** objective of this study was to use the Soil and Watershed Assessment Tool(SWAT) to identify CSAs at the subwatershed level and evaluate the impact of alternative BmPs on sediment and total phosphorus(TP) load reductions in the Pleasant Valley watershed(50 km~2) in South Central Wisconsin(USA).The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency,percent bias,and coefficient of determination ranged from 0.58 to 0.71,-12.87 to 38.33,and 0.67 to 0.79,respectively,indicating that SWAT was able to predict stream flow,sediment and TP loadings at a monthly time-step with sufficient *** on the SWAT simulation results,annual average(2006-2012) subwatershed yield for sediment and TP ranged from 0.06 to 3.14 tons hayrand 0.04 to1.9 kg hayr,*** croplands were the major source ofsediment and TP in this watershed(> 84%).Reduction in sediment and TP loading ranged from 66%to 99%at the subwatershed level after conversion of croplands to Conservation Reserve Program(CRP) grasslands in subwatersheds identified as *** the other hand,reduction in sediment and TP loading with implementation of no-till practices ranged from only 14%to 25%.At the watershed outlet,sediment and TP loading reduction wasmplementation of no-till practices because only about 8%of the watershed area was targeted for BmPs and/or resuspension of sediment deposited on the stream bed masked the downstream improvements in water quality.

Evaluation of the Ex-PRESS~ P-50 implant under scleral flap in combined cataract and glaucoma surgery

AIm： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of glaucoma drainage device Ex-PRESS~ P-50 for combined cataract surgery and glaucoma.·mETHODS： Patients having cataract and open angle glaucoma or patients with open advanced glaucoma which needed two or more antiglaucoma medications were included. Combined cataract surgery and glaucoma with Ex-PRESS~ P-50 model placed under scleral flap was performed.·RESULTS： Out of 40 eyes of 40 patients（55% male and45% female） completed the study during one-year follow-up. The mean of age was 76.6 ±11.02 y. The intraocular pressure（IOP） decreased significantly during the 12-month follow-up from 23.5 mm Hg to 16.8 mm Hg（Wilcoxon signed ranks test, P 〈0.001）. A 59.5% of patients did not need any topical treatment, 10.8% of them needed one active principle, 27% needed two active principles, and 2.7% of them needed three active principles for successful IOP control（〈21 mm Hg）.·CONCLUSION：Combinedsurgeryofphacoemulsification with Ex PRESS~ P-50 lowers IOP from the preoperative baseline and reduces significantly the number of antiglaucoma active principles for IOP control after the operation.

Genetic variation in eggplant for Nitrogen Use Efficiency under contrasting NO3^- supply

Eggplant(Solanum melongena L.) yield is highly sensitive to N fertilization, the excessive use of which is responsible for environmental and human health *** N input together with the selection of improved Nitrogen-Use-Efficiency(NUE) genotypes, more able to uptake, utilize, and remobilize N available in soils, can be challenging to maintain high crop yields in a sustainable agriculture. The aim of this study was to explore the natural variation among eggplant accessions from different origins, in response to Low(LN) and High(HN)Nitrate(NO3^-) supply, to identify NUE-contrasting genotypes and their NUE-related traits, in hydroponic and greenhouse pot experiments. Two eggplants, Am222 and Am22, were identified as N-use efficient and inefficient,respectively, in hydroponic, and these results were confirmed in a pot experiment, when crop yield was also evaluated. Overall, our results indicated the key role of Nutilization component(NUt E) to confer high NUE. The remobilization of N from leaves to fruits may be a strategy to enhance NUt E, suggesting glutamate synthase as a key enzyme. Further, omics technologies will be used for focusing on C-N metabolism interacting networks. The availability of RILs from two other selected NUE-contrasting genotypes will allow us to detect major genes/quantitative trait loci related to NUE.

Enhancing the dissolution of phenylbutazone using Syloid based mesoporous silicas for oral equine applications

Three mesoporous silica excipients （Syloid~ silicas AL-1 FR XDP 3050 and XDP 3150） were formulated with a model drug known for its poor aqueous solubility, namely phenylbutazone, in an attempt to enhance the extent and rate of drug dissolution. Although other forms of mesoporous silica have been investigated in previous studies, the effect of inclusion with these specific Syloid silica based excipients and more interestingly, with phenylbutazone, is unknown. This work reports a significant enhancement for both the extent and rate of drug release for all three forms of Syloid silica at a 1：1 drug：silica ratio over a period of 30 min. An explanation for this increase was determined to be conversion to the amorphous form and an enhanced drug loading ability within the pores. Differences between the release profiles of the three silicas were concluded to be a consequence of the physicochemical differences between the three forms. Overall, this study confirms that Syloid silica based excipients can be used to enhance dissolution, and potentially therefore bioavailability, for compounds with poor aqueous solubility such as phenylbutazone. In addition, it has been confirmed that drug release can be carefully tailored based on the choice of Syloid~ silica and desired release profile.

Since the mud snail Bullacta exarata was introduced for economic aquaculture in the Huanghe River(Yellow River) Delta in 2001, its quick population growth and expanded distribution make it a key-species in the intertidal zone of this area. This significantly contributed to the economic income of the local people, but its potential ecological impact on the benthic ecosystem remains unknown. A mesocosm study was conducted to test whether its bioturbation activities affect the microphytobenthos(mPBs;i.e., sedimentary microbes and unicellular algae)productivity and the nutrient exchange between the sediment-water interface. Our results show that the mud snail significantly impacted the dissolved oxygen(DO) flux across the sediment-water interface on the condition of normal sediment and light treatment, and significantly increased the ammonium efflux during recovery period in the defaunated sediment and dark treatment. The presence of micro-and meiofauna significantly increased the NH4-N flux in dark treatment. Whereas, in light treatment, these small animals had less effects on the DO and NH4-N flux between sediment-water interface. Our results provide better insight into the effect of the mud snail *** on the ecosystem functioning via benthic fluxes.

Background: Although growing evidence links beta-amyloid (Aβ) and neuronal hyperexcitability in preclinical mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a similar association in humans is yet to be established. The first aim of the study was to determine the association between elevated Aβ (Aβ+) and cognitive processes measured by the P3 event-related potential (ERP) in cognitively normal (CN) older adults. The second aim was to compare the event- related power between CNAβ+ and CNAβ−. methods: Seventeen CNAβ+ participants (age: 73 ± 5, 11 females, montreal Cognitive Assessment [moCA] score 26 ± 2) and 17 CNAβ- participants group-matched for age, sex, and mOCA completed a working memory task (n-back with n = 0, 1, 2) test while wearing a 256-channel electro-encephalography net. P3 peak amplitude and latency of the target, nontarget and task difference effect (nontarget−target), and event-related power in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands, extracted from Fz, Cz, and Pz, were compared between groups using linear mixed models. P3 ampli-tude of the task difference effect at Fz and event-related power in the delta band were considered main outcomes. Correlations of mean Aβ standard uptake value ratios (SUVR) using positron emission tomography with P3 amplitude and latency of the task difference effect were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient r. Results: The P3 peak amplitude of the task difference effect at Fz was lower in the CNAβ+ group (P = 0.048). Simi-larly, power was lower in the delta band for nontargets at Fz in the CNAβ+ participants (P = 0.04). The CNAβ+ partici-pants also demonstrated higher theta and alpha power in channels at Cz and Pz, but no changes in P3 ERP. Strong correlations were found between the mean Aβ SUVR and the latency of the 1-back (r = − 0.69;P = 0.003) and 2-back (r = − 0.69;P = 0.004) of the task difference effect at channel Fz in the CNAβ+ group.
