Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR(MC),saxitoxin(STX),and anatoxin-a(ANTX-a)which are harmful to humans and other *** removal efficiencies of STX and ANTX-a by powdered activated carbon(PAC)was investigated,aswell as when MC-LR and cyanobacteriawere *** conductedwith distilled water and then source water,using the PAC dosages,rapid mix/flocculation mixing intensities and contact times of two drinking water treatment plants in northeast *** pH 8 and 9,STX removal was 47%-81%in distilled water and 46%-79%in source water,whereas it was 0-28%for pH 6 in distilled water and 31%-52%in source *** 1.6μg/L or 20μg/L MC-LR was present with STX,STX removal was increased with PAC simultaneously removing 45%-65%of the 1.6μg/L MC-LR and 25%-95%of the 20μg/L MC-LR depending on the ***-a removal at pH 6 was 29%-37%for distilled water and 80%for source water,whereas it was 10%-26%for pH 8 in distilled water and 28%for pH 9 in source *** presence of cyanobacteria cells decreased ANTX-a removal by at least 18%.When 20μg/L MC-LR was present with ANTX-a in source water,59%-73%ANTX-a and 48%-77%of MCLR was removed at pH 9 depending on the PAC *** general,a higher PAC dose led to higher cyanotoxin *** study also documented that multiple cyanotoxins can be effectively removed by PAC for water at pH’s between 6 and 9.

The concept of reserve appears in the neurological literature in the 1940s arising from the observation that there is no linear relationship between neurological damage and severity of the clinical ***,this concept sustains that the experiences pursued during life-span enrich the brain by making it more resilient to neuronal ***,in the last three decades the reserve concept has become very popular in the scientific field,mainly associated with the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the Alzheimer’s Disease(AD)(Serra et al.,2018;Stern et al.,2018).

We present a case of necrotizing pneumonia in an 87-year-old man without severe respiratory instability. Clinical suspicion arose due to the need for supplementary oxygen and persistent fever during treatment for community-acquired pneumonia. The diagnosis was confirmed by chest computed tomography. Although necrotizing pneumonia typically requires major surgical intervention upon diagnosis, we chose conservative management with antimicrobials and chest drainage alone. The patient experienced significant improvement and resolution of pneumonia with conservative management.

Central nervous system(CNS)injuries and neurodegenerative diseases show a broad spectrum of common pathophysiological processes,including oxidative stress,neuroinflammation,excitotoxicity,demyelination and neurotransmission *** the past decades,valuable experimental investigations have helped to clarify the role and timing of these multiple molecular and cellular mechanisms in each of these particular disorders,which usually overlap and critically contribute to long-term ***,up to now,no definite cures or effective disease-modifying therapies are available for any of these *** has led to an active search of novel therapeutic approaches,including the repositioning of existing drugs for new indications,as a valid approach to promptly move candidate molecules to clinical trials.

In the near future, various types of low-carbon technologies(LCTs) are expected to be widely employed throughout the United Kingdom. However, the effect that these technologies will have at a household level on the existing low voltage(LV) network is still an area of extensive research. We propose an agent based model that estimates the growth of LCTs within local neighbourhoods,where social influence is imposed. Real-life data from an LV network is used that comprises of many socially diverse neighbourhoods. Both electric vehicle uptake and the combined scenario of electric vehicle and photovoltaic adoption are investigated with this data. A probabilistic approach is outlined, which determines lower and upper bounds for the model response at every *** technique is used to assess the implications of modifying model assumptions and introducing new model features. Moreover, we discuss how the calculation of these bounds can inform future network planning decisions.

Recent years have witnessed enormous progress in our understanding of the genetic predisposition to colorectal cancer (CRC). Estimates suggest that all or most genetic susceptibility mechanisms proposed so far, ranging from high-penetrance genes to low-risk alleles, account for about 60% of the population-attributable fraction of CRC predisposition. In this context, there is increasing interest in the gene encoding the transforming growth factor β receptor 1 (TGFBR1 ); first when over a decade ago a common polymorphism in exon 1 (rs11466445, TGFBR1 *6A/9A) was suggested to be a risk allele for CRC, then when linkage studies identified the chromosomal region where the gene is located as susceptibility locus for familial CRC, and more recently when the allele-specific expression (ASE) of the gene was proposed as a risk factor for CRC. Published data on the association of TGFBR1 with CRC, regarding polymorphisms and ASE and including sporadic and familial forms of the disease, are often contradictory. This review gives a general overview of the most relevant studies in order to clarify the role of TGFBR1 in the field of CRC genetic susceptibility.

Due to the increased demand for ready-to-eat(RTE)minimally processed foods,alternatives to chemical and thermal preservation methods to maintain food safety are highly demanded.A significant safety hazard in RTE food products is the growth of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes(***).After processing,recontamination or cross-contamination of *** in RTE food products may occur and the lack of cooking can lead to an increased risk of ***,some RTE food products(*** and cured meat)can have a long processing period and shelf life,thus allowing for the growth and proliferation of *** in the food *** acid bacteria(LAB)are generally recognized as safe probiotics and have been proposed as a biological control approach to eliminate foodborne pathogens including *** have been reported to extend the shelf life of food products and inhibit pathogen proliferation via growth competition and metabolite *** are native microflora of many RTE foods,but only certain LAB may inhibit pathogen ***,the specificity of LAB species should be employed in their use in RTE *** review will discuss the antimicrobial mechanisms of LAB against ***,selective use of LAB in food matrices,and their uses in food processing and packaging.
