Fatal Leptospirosis Case in Pediatric Patient: Clinical Case

Introduction: Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis. It is transmitted through the urine of infected animals. Currently, there is an increase of reports in many countries. In humans, it presents an ample clinical spectrum, which goes from an asymptomatic infection up to Weil syndrome, which is generally fatal. Clinical Case: A male, 6 years of age, who started with onset fever and jaundice, handled in private means, diagnosed as viral hepatitis “A” and was referred to an institutional hospital where hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were detected. His evolution was towards graveness and, therefore, he was referred to a third level hospital with reactive Hepatitis diagnosis and to rule out lymphoma. On admission, he presented liver and kidney failure, as well as metabolic acidosis and pulmonary haemorrhage that led to death 6 hours later. Confirmatory tests for hepatitis were negative;biopsies were taken post-mortem for Leptospira diagnosis, which were positive in liver and kidney. Conclusions: Leptospirosis is a disease that may be manifested in multiple ways. It is important the understanding of this disease by the physician to improve the diagnosis and, for general population, to avoid exposure. The examination of the epidemiological history of the patient is essential.

SARS-CoV-2 is the causal agent of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a single-stranded RnA beta-coronavirus that is comprised of a 5′ and 3′-untranslated region (UTR) in its non-coding RnA (ncRnA) region. The P-element-induced wimpy testis (PIWI)-interacting RnAs (piRnAs) are ncRnA sequences that bind to transposons and interfere with the translation of new genes. Here, we search for short sequences in the non-coding regions, corresponding to 28 nucleotides (nt). These start from a uracil and have a conserved region of at least 10 nt of homology with the previously reported piRnAs. The aim of this work was to identify piRnA-like sequences in the 3′-UTR of SARS-CoV-2 from the reported Wuhan Patient's genome sequence (GenBank: Mn908947.3).

Livestock is the most important economic activity in San Vicente del Caguán municipality, Caquetá department (located in Colombian Amazon region). Indeed, livestock activities have a big responsibility of Colombian Amazon forest deforestation for extensive grazing lands formation, causing soil degradation processes. However, recently some cattle ranchers have changed their thoughts to a sustainable production, applying different ecological strategies. So, application of silvopastoral systems, which is a very important mode of agroforestry, consists that in the same area and time, it can interact in the ecosystem stratums different species among grasses, shrubs, and trees. On this way, the objective of this study is to determine descriptively the arboreal/arbustive component associated to livestock systems, represented according to its uses in San Vicente del Caguán, Colombia. It was made through a direct survey to 13 smallholders in this municipality. As a result, mainly, we found 58 plant species (49 arboreal and nine arbustive, corresponding to 84.48% and 15.52%, respectively). Of these, 20 species had more than one use at a time. In fact, the shade was the use most common with 29 species, corresponding to 34.94% of total species (25 arboreal and just four arbustive, corresponding to 30.12% and 4.82%, respectively). On this way, according to smallholders surveyed, we can conclude that shade provided by trees integration in silvopastoral systems is for diminishing heat stress on cattle caused by enduring climate change of tropical, thus contributing to good welfare for animals.

IBD5 polymorphisms in inflammatory bowel disease: Association with response to infliximab

AIM: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are multifactorial pathologies of unknown etiology. One susceptibility locus, IBD5, has been mapped to chromosome 5q31. We analyzed our Spanish cohorts of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (DC) patients to determine whether this locus is associated with IBD, and to ascertain the main clinical phenotype influenced by this risk factor. The kind of interaction, either genetic heterogeneity or epistasis, between this IBD5 susceptibility region and the nOD2/CARD15 gene mutations was studied as well. Finally, we assessed whether this locus can predict response to infliximab therapy. METHODS: A case control study was performed with 274 CD and 211 UC patients recruited from a single center and 511 healthy ethnically matched controls. Two polymorphisms were genotyped in the IBD5 locus and three in the CARD15/nOD2 gene. RESULTS: Our results evidence association only with CD especially with the fistulizing phenotype and in the absence of nOD2/CARD15 variants (mutant allele frequency in patients vs controls: OR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.35-3.06, Pncy of the IBD5 homozygous mutant genotype significantly increased in CD patients lacking response to infliximab (RR = 3.88, 95% CI = 1.18-12.0, Pnts overall do not show association with 5q31 polymorphisms, although a similar trend to the one observed in CD is found within the worse prognosis group. COnCLUSIOn: The IBD5 variants may enhance an individual carrier's risk for CD, mainly in the absence of the nOD2/CARD15 mutations and in fistulizing patients. The data presented suggest the potential role of the 5q31 polymorphisms as markers of response to infliximab.

AIM: To analyze the attitude of Spanish medical students toward living liver donation (LLD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this ***: Study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. Study population: Medical students enrolled in Spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. Sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire (PCID-DVH RIOS) was self-administered and completed anonymously. Data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. The questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. Statistical analysis: Student´s t test, χ2 test and logistic regression ***: The completion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of related LLD, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrelated LLD. In this study, chitosan nanoparticles (CSnPs) and chitosan nanoparticles- botanical extracts: EEA-CSnPs (ethanolic blueberry extract added chitosan nano-particles) and EMn-CSnPs (extract methanol of nanche added chitosan nano-particles) were characterized and evaluated in vitro ongrowth of Alternaria alternata isolated from Fig and Rosemary and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolated from Papaya and Soursop. From particle size distribution characteriza-tion, the size of nanoparticles increased after EEA incorporation. On the other hand, the smallest value of Z-average particle size was for the EMn-CSnPs. Zeta potential value decreased for CSnPs and EEA-CSnPs. However, when EMn is incorporated to CSnPs, the value is increased. From the results, it can be seen that the most stable suspension was EMn-CSnPs. After incorporation of Byrsonima crassifolia to CSnPs, no changes were observed in characteristic absorption bands for the FTIR spectra. However, after Vaccinium corymbosum incorporation to the CSnPs, changes were seen. For in vitro evaluation, CSnPs without EEA caused the total germination and sporulation inhibition of A. alternata from Rosemary. Incorporation of EMn to CSnPs improved the control of C. gloeosporioides with amycelial growth inhibition of 79% isolated from papaya and 82% isolated from soursop. In both isolated there were total germination inhibition. Overall, a synergistic effect between the chitosan and EMn was observed.

＜正＞MTT3, a new ciliate general-stress-response metallothionein （MT） isoform has been discovered and characterized in Tetrahymena thermophila. MTT3 shows strong sequence identity with a previously identified MT gene （MTT1） and is located about 1.7 kb downstream of it, suggestive of an earlier duplication event. Sequence comparisons of three related ciliate MTs reveal a very striking modular structure. MTT1 and MTT3 predicted proteins have three modules, while the Tetrahymena pyriformis MT-1 （TpMT-1） protein has only two. nevertheless, TpMT-1 and MTT1 are more similar to one another

Forest ecosystems represent a third of the total organic carbon (TOC) stored in the soil. However, studies still need to be carried out to generate reliable information on its soil carbon storage potential in an experimental plantation. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the storage of total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil in two experimental forest plantations with tropical species, located in the state of nayarit, México. The research was carried out in two experimental plantations with tropical species, located at the Santiago Ixcuintla Experimental Field (CESIX) and at the El Verdine?o Experimental Site (SEEV). The established species are Swietenia macrophylla King (mahogany), Cedrela odorata L. (cedar) and Tabebuia rosea Bertoil (pink trumpet-tree). In addition, data from dasometric variables were used in order to define if any of these variables had a similar variation to the soil TOC stock by species. The sampling was done under a randomized block experimental design in each experimental forest plantation (CESIX and SEEV). nine composite samples were collected in the soil under the tree species at a depth of 0 - 30 cm, and 1.5 m distance from the tree. To determine the soil TOC, an elemental analyzer with a thermal conductivity detector Thermo Scientific (Flash 2000) was used. The results showed that TOC presented mean values of 103.60 and 219.98 t·ha-1 at a depth of 0 - 30 cm in CESIX and SEEV respectively.
