Evaluating the addition of radar with optical data for vegetation mapping in a montane region in Sri Lanka

The use of freely-available multi-source imagery for mapping vegetation in montane terrain is important for many developing countries that do not have the funding for high-resolution data *** images are also now freely available and include Sentinel-1 in dual polarisation,and *** images can penetrate cloud cover and provide the advantage of acquiring data in a cloudy tropical *** research evaluated whether the addition of radar with optical and topographic data improves classification accuracy in a montane region in Sri *** classification experiments were designed based on different combinations of image data to test whether radar data improved land cover classification accuracy compared with optical data *** forest classifier in the Google Earth Engine has been utilised to classify the tropical montane *** results indicate that radar or optical data alone cannot obtain satisfactory ***,when combining radar with optical data the overall accuracy increased by approximately 5%,and by an additional 2%when topography data were *** highest accuracy(92%)was achieved with multiple imagery,and adding the vegetation indices improved the model slightly by 0.3%.In addition,feature importance analysis showed that radar data makes a significant contribution to the *** positive outcomes demonstrate that freely-accessible multi-source remotely-sensed data have impressive capability for vegetation mapping,and support the monitoring and managing of forest ecological resources in tropical montane regions.

Reduction of N2O emissions by DMPP depends on the interactions of nitrogen sources(digestate vs. urea) with soil properties

The inhibition of nitrification by mixing nitrification inhibitors(NI)with fertilizers is emerging as an effective method to reduce fertilizer-induced nitrous oxide(N_(2)O)*** additive 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate(DMPP)apparently inhibits ammonia oxidizing bacteria(AOB)more than ammonia oxidizing archaea(AOA),which dominate the nitrification in alkaline and acid soil,***,the efficacy of DMPP in terms of nitrogen sources interacting with soil properties remains *** therefore conducted a microcosm experiment using three typical Chinese agricultural soils with contrasting pH values(fluvo-aquic soil,black soil and red soil),which were fertilized with either digestate or urea in conjunction with a range of DMPP *** the alkaline fluvo-aquic soil,fertilization with either urea or digestate induced a peak in N_(2)O emission(60μg N kg^(-1)d^(-1))coinciding with the rapid nitrification within 3 d following *** almost eliminated this peak in N_(2)O emission,reducing it by nearly 90%,despite the fact that the nitrification rate was only reduced by 50%.In the acid black soil,only the digestate induced an N_(2)O emission that increased gradually,reaching its maximum(20μg N kg^(-1)d^(-1))after 5–7 *** nitrification rate and N_(2)O emission were both marginally reduced by DMPP in the black soil,and the N_(2)O yield(N_(2)O-N per NO2–+NO3–-N produced)was exceptionally high at 3.5%,suggesting that the digestate induced heterotrophic *** the acid red soil,the N_(2)O emission spiked in the digestate and urea treatments at 50 and 10μg N kg^(-1)d^(-1),respectively,and DMPP reduced the rates substantially by nearly 70%.Compared with 0.5%DMPP,the higher concentrations of DMPP(1.0 to 1.5%)did not exert a significantly(P<0.05)better inhibition effect on the N_(2)O emissions in these soils(either with digestate or urea).This study highlights the importance of matching the nitrogen sources,soil properties and NIs

In this paper,we report on polarization combining two-dimensional grating couplers(2D GCs)on amorphous Si:H,fabricated in the backend of line of a photonic BiCMOS *** 2D GCs can be used as an interface of a hybrid silicon photonic coherent transmitter,which can be implemented on bulk Si *** fabricated 2D GCs operate in the telecom C-band and show an experimental coupling efficiency of−5 dB with a wafer variation of±1.2 *** for efficiency enhancement and improved performance stability in future design generations are outlined and extension toward O-band devices is also investigated.

A simple guideline to apply excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy(EEMs)for the characterization of dissolved organic matter(DOM)in anoxic marine sediments

Accurate energy barriers for catalytic reaction pathways: an automatic training protocol for machine learning force fields

We introduce a training protocol for developing machine learning force fields(MLFFs),capable of accurately determining energy barriers in catalytic reaction *** protocol is validated on the extensively explored hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol over indium *** the help of active learning,the final force field obtains energy barriers within 0.05 eV of Density Functional *** to the computational speedup,not only do we reduce the cost of routine in-silico catalytic tasks,but also find an alternative path for the previously established rate-limiting step,with a 40%reduction in activation ***,we illustrate the importance of finite temperature effects and compute free energy *** transferability of the protocol is demonstrated on the experimentally relevant,yet unexplored,top-layer reduced indium oxide *** ability of MLFFs to enhance our understanding of extensively studied catalysts underscores the need for fast and accurate alternatives to direct ab-initio simulations.

In 2019,metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)was introduced as a novel definition in order to represent the causal etiologies(i.e.,overweight,type 2 diabetes,metabolic syndrome)of the majority of patients with fatty liver disease without discrimination for chronic alcohol consumption,as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)became the leading cause of chronic injury in western societies(1).NAFLD diagnosis is based on the detection of hepatic steatosis with exclusion of any secondary causality,especially chronic harmful alcohol *** NAFLD,MAFLD definition requires invasive or non-invasive hepatic steatosis assessment in addition to being overweight/obese,and/or type 2 diabetes and/or the presence of two metabolic dysfunction criteria without the exclusion of other liver ***,MAFLD and NAFLD do not reflect the same patient *** MAFLD includes any patient with relevant metabolic risk factors and steatosis regardless of additional causes,NAFLD includes a significant number of patients without metabolic risk factors(lean NAFLD).However,to date there is little data available on the impact of the modified definition on clinical outcome and associated mortality,as previously discussed elsewhere(2).

HEALTH CONSUMER DIVERSITY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS

Health care consumers no longer want to be passive receivers of treatment and care, they want to be involved. This shift is driven by the new information technology and a ‘social revolution’. Easy access to health information, thanks largely to the Internet, and active health consumer organizations have provided consumers with enabling independent health information. Individual consumers are also more willing to enter into a dialogue, participate and influence decisions concerning their own care. At the same time the consumer role becomes more diverse. Populations in many countries today are culturally, socially, and demographically diverse. Understanding consumer diversity is one of the greatest challenges facing health care providers. There is a risk that the quality of health care provided to consumers can vary depending on the skills of the professionals to tune into the values and preferences of the individual consumer. Health care providers need to listen to and incorporate consumers’ experiences into their health service offerings in new and creative ways. They need to engage in a dialogue with various consumer groups using multiple channels. There is a need for a new business logic, which would structurally help the providers, on an individual basis to deal with more sophisticated health care consumers. This is a review paper and provides a framework and a set of strategies for dealing with health consumer diversity. We draw on three interrelated theories – open systems theory, service management research and the concept of consumer segmentation to understand health care consumers’ attitudes and behaviour, and their expectations.

In this paper,we propose a benchmark problem for the challengers aiming to energy efficiency control of hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs)on a road with ***,it is assumed that the targeted HEVs are in the connected environment with the obtainment of real-time information of vehicle-to-everything(V2X),including geographic information,vehicle-to-infrastructure(V2I)information and vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V)*** provided simulator consists of an industrial-level HEV model and a traffic scenario database obtained through a commercial traffic simulator,where the running route is generated based on real-world data with slope and intersection *** benchmark problem to be solved is the HEVs powertrain control using traffic information to fulfill fuel economy improvement while satisfying the constraints of driving safety and travel *** show the HEV powertrain characteristics,a case study is given with the speed planning and energy management strategy.

Is COX-2 a perpetrator or a protector? Selective COX-2 inhibitors remain controversial~1

Aim: COX-2(cyclooxygenase-2) has sparked a surge in pharmaceutical interest since its discovery at the beginning of the 1990s. Several COX-2 selective inhibi- tors that avoid gastrointestinal side effects have been successfully launched into the market in recent years. The first selective COX-2 inhibitor, celecoxib, enteredthe market in December 1999. However, there are a few organs that physiologi-cally and functionally express COX-2, particularly the glomeruli of the kidney and the cortex of the brain. Inhibition of COX-2 expression in these organs possibly causes heart attack and stroke in long-term COX-2 inhibitor users. Recently, a USA Food and Drug Agency (FDA) advisory panel re-evaluated COX-2 inhibitors and unanimously concluded that the entire class of COX-2 inhibitors increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. Thus the use of COX-2 inhibitors is still controversial, and there is a challenge for not only pharmacologists, but also the pharmaceutical industry, to develop improved painkilling and anti-inflammatory drugs. This may involve exploring a new generation of COX-2 inhibitors with different inhibitory mechanisms through computer-aided design, screening differ-ent sources of inhibitors with lower Selectivity, or seeking completely new targets. Synthetic COX-2 inhibitors have high selectivity and the advantage of irrever-sible inhibition, whereas naturally derived COX-2 inhibitors have lower selectivity and fewer side effects, with the medical effects in general not being as striking as those achieved using synthetic inhibitors. This review discusses the mechanism of COX-2 inhibitor therapy and a possible new way of exploration in the develop-ment of anti-inflammatory, analgetic, and antipyretic drugs.

There exists a gap between control theory and control practice,i.e.,all control methods suggested by researchers are not implemented in real systems and,on the other hand,many important in dustrial problems are not studied in the academic *** problems can help close this gap and provide many opportunities for members in both the controls theory and application *** goal is to survey and give pointers to different general controls and modeling related benchmark problems that can serve as inspiration for future benchmarks and then specifically focus the benchmark coverage on automotive control engineering *** the paper reflections are given on how different categories of benchmark designers,benchmark solvers and third part users can benefit from providing,solving,and studying benchmark *** paper also collects information about several benchmark problems and gives pointers to papers than give more detailed information about different problems that have been presented.
