Energy-efficient electro-optic modulators are at the heart of short-reach optical interconnects,and silicon photonics is considered the leading technology for realizing such ***,the performance of all-silicon devices is limited by intrinsic material *** particular,the absence of linear electro-optic effects in silicon renders the integration of energy-efficient photonic–electronic interfaces ***–organic hybrid(SOH)integration can overcome these limitations by combining nanophotonic silicon waveguides with organic cladding materials,thereby offering the prospect of designing optical properties by molecular *** this paper,we demonstrate an SOH Mach–Zehnder modulator with unprecedented efficiency:the 1-mm-long device consumes only 0.7 fJ bit^(-1) to generate a 12.5 Gbit s^(-1) data stream with a bit-error ratio below the threshold for hard-decision forward-error *** power consumption represents the lowest value demonstrated for a non-resonant Mach–Zehnder modulator in any material *** is enabled by a novel class of organic electro-optic materials that are designed for high chromophore density and enhanced molecular *** device features an electro-optic coefficient of r33rated at data rates of up to 40 Gbit s^(-1).

Primary Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a spontaneously fatal disease characterized by an obstruction of the hepatic venous outflow tract due to thrombosis or a primary disease of the venous wall. The primary form of BCS is extremely rare. This is a disease mainly affecting young adults of both sexes. Clinical manifestations are variable;they can be asymptomatic, acute, or subacute but mostly chronic. Several causes have been identified, such as myeloproliferative syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and inherited thrombotic disorders. Data on primary BCS in Sub-Saharan Africa is rare as most publications available are case reports. In these reports, the causes are unknown with poor prognosis in most cases often leading to patient death. We herein present a case report of a male patient diagnosed with a primary BCS at Yaoundé General Hospital (Cameroon) caused by a Protein C deficiency who presented with ascites decompensating liver cirrhosis. Treatment was based on anticoagulants, diuretics and laxatives administration. Two years after the diagnosis, the patient is alive with clinical and paraclinical improvement.

We examine the intersection of the FAIr principles(Findable,Accessible,Interoperable and reusable),the challenges and opportunities presented by the aggregation of widely distributed and heterogeneous data about biological and geological specimens,and the use of the Digital Object Architecture(DOA)data model and components as an approach to solving those challenges that offers adherence to the FAIr principles as an integral *** approach will be prototyped in the Distributed System of Scientific Collections(DiSSCo)project,the pan-European research Infrastructure which aims to unify over 110 natural science collections across 21 *** take each of the FAIr principles,discuss them as requirements in the creation of a seamless virtual collection of bio/geo specimen data,and map those requirements to Digital Object components and facilities such as persistent identification,extended data typing,and the use of an additional level of abstraction to normalize existing heterogeneous data *** FAIr principles inform and motivate the work and the DO Architecture provides the technical vision to create the seamless virtual collection vitally needed to address scientific questions of societal importance.

Improving mine safety technology and training in the *** of the Mine Safety Technology and Training Commission

The key issues studied focused on underground coal mining and included (1) prevention of explosions in sealed areas,(2) better emergency preparedness and re- sponse,(3) improvement of miners' ability to escape,(4) better protection of miners before and after a fire or explosion,(5) improved provision of oxygen,and (6) development and implementation of more robust post-incident *** *** passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency response Act of 2006,which mandated new laws to address the *** with investigations and congressional deliberations, the National Mining Association formed the independent Mine Safety Technology and Training Commission to study the state-of-the-art relative to technology and training that could address the vulnerabilities exposed by the mine *** discussed,the report outlined persistent vulnerabilities linked with significant hazards in underground coal mines, and made recommendations to provide a path for addressing *** the commis- sion report made 75 recommendations in the areas of risk-based design and management, communications technology,emergency response and mine rescue procedures,training for preparedness,and escape and protection *** its deliberations,the commis- sion importantly noted that mine safety in the *** to follow a new paradigm for en- suring mine safety and developing a culture of prevention that supports safe production at the business *** the commission's viewpoint,the bottom line in protecting coal miners is not only adopting a culture of prevention but also systematically pursuing mitigation of significant risks.

The objective of this paper is to discuss recent developments in the application of biological markers to animal models of male reproductive toxicology. We have divided this paper into three major sections: First, a discussion of the testing protocols currently under investigation by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the EPA's Health Effects research Laboratory; second, an examination of what we consider to be important and practical biological markers available to investigators to assess the effects of toxicants on the male reproductive system; and third, a discussion of promising new technologies, such as molecular and immunological probes, and in vitro techniques using isolated and cultured cells, which in the future may be exploited for the development of additional biological markers of male reproductive toxicity. Where appropriate we have made specific recommendations for the use of these biological markers in animal protocols and have pointed out those noninvasive markers which have application to screening human males.

Sperm retrieval and intracytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes in men with cystic fibrosis disease versus congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens

recent data suggest that cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator(CFTr)gene alterations negatively impact male fertility beyond *** sought to compare gene alterations,sperm retrieval rates,and intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI)outcomes among men with cystic fibrosis(CF)disease and congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens(CBAVD)*** retrospectively evaluated all men who underwent surgical sperm retrieval at two academic,high-volume andrology centers from 2010 to *** men with documented CFTr alterations and obstructive azoospermia from either CBAVD or CF were *** between groups for CFTr abnormality,sperm retrieval,and ICSI outcomes were statistically ***,39 patients were included with 10 in the CF and 29 in the CBAVD *** sperm retrieval rates were significantly lower in the CF group for sperm concentration(14.8×10^(6)ml^(-1)vs 61.4×10^(6)ml^(−1),P=0.02)and total motile sperm count(2.9 million vs 11.4 million,P=0.01).This difference was only predicted by homozygous delta F508 CFTr mutations(Proup also demonstrated a significantly higher rate of rescue testicular sperm extraction(70.0%vs 27.6%,Pr fertilization rate with ICSI(32.5%vs 68.9%,Prated lower sperm quality,greater difficulty with sperm retrieval,and worse ICSI outcomes compared with CBAVD-only *** delta F508 CFTr mutations appear to significantly impair spermatogenesis and sperm function.

Context-free Grammars for Triangular Arrays

We consider context-free grammars of the form G = {f → f^b1＋b2＋1g^a1＋a2, g → f^b1 g^a1＋1},where ai and bi are integers sub ject to certain positivity conditions. Such a grammar G gives rise to triangular arrays {T（n, k）}0≤k≤n satisfying a three-term recurrence relation. Many combinatorial sequences can be generated in this way. Let Tn （x） =∑k=0^n T（n, k）x^k. Based on the differential operator with respect to G, we define a sequence of linear operators Pn such that Tn＋1（x） = Pn（Tn（x））. Applying the characterization of real stability preserving linear operators on the multivariate polynomials due to Borcea and Br？ndén, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator Pn to be real stability preserving for any n. As a consequence, we are led to a sufficient condition for the real-rootedness of the polynomials defined by certain triangular arrays, obtained by Wang and ***, as special cases we obtain grammars that lead to identities involving the Whitney numbers and the Bessel numbers.

Men with a complete absence of normal sperm morphology exhibit high rates of success without assisted reproduction

In couples with infertility, abnormal strict morphology of 0% normal forms （NF） is a criterion to proceed rapidly to in vitro fertilization （IVF）. Since no data currently exist, we investigated the outcomes for men with 0% NF to determine reproductive success without the use of assisted reproductive technologies （ArT）. A cohort of 24 men with 0% NF were identified （2010-2013） with 27 randomly selected men with 〉4% NF as controls. Patient charts were reviewed with men contacted and administered an Institutional review Board （IrB）-approved telephone questionnaire to ascertain outcomes. After a median follow-up time of 2.5 years, 29.2% of men with 0% NF did not require ArT for their first pregnancy （controls = 55.6%, P〈 0.05）. When all pregnancies were analyzed together, men with 0% NF achieved twenty pregnancies of which 75% did not require IVF （controls - thirty pregnancies; 76.7% did not require IVF）. The average age of men and female partners was similar between men with 0% NF and 〉4% NF. All men had normal follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, testosterone, prolactin, sex hormone-binding globulin （SHBG）, and estradiol. Although, global semen parameters were worse in men with 0% NF, when a first pregnancy was a natural conception （NC）, 100% of men with 0% NF （n = 7/7） and 37.5% of controls in = 3/8） went on to have a subsequent pregnancy via NC. Men with 0% NF conceived without IVF in 29.2% of cases compared to 55.6% of controls. Strict morphology should not be used to predict fertilization, pregnancy, or live birth potential. In men with 0% NF, alternative modalities should be considered before immediate IVF.

Dear Editor, The patient is a 45-year-old male who presented to an outside clinic in 2014 for evaluation of painful ejaculation, infertility, and difficulty with urination for as long as he could remember. He reported no past significant medical or surgical history and no family history of infertility. He was given a trial of tamsulosin without improvement in his symptoms. Initial semen analysis demonstrated azoospermia.

Impact of renewable power market penetration on coal power generation capacity growth

Since renewable energy sources are growing in importance, how well they can penetrate the energy market for power generation will be a very important factor in the role the coal industry will play in the future. This paper examined the displacement of coal power plant capacity from 2010 to 2050 by renewables with respect to three drivers assumed under various conditions： the American recovery and reinvestment Act （ArrA）, Greenhouse Gas （GItG） policy, and varying plant capital cost cases. The results by 2050 illustrate that renewable market penetration captures anywhere from 1.9% to 6.4% of potential coal power generation capacity additions. renewable power generation capacity additions is expected to outpace coal power plant additions by 89% with respect to ArrA in 2050, however with no GHG policy coal power generation capacity build-outs will outpace renewables by as high as 809%. Finally, coal power generation is still projected to be the largest single energy source contributor to the electricity market making up 28.0% of total available capacity, while renewables are expected to only make up 16.3% of total available capacity.
