The influence of chitosaccharides on the symbiotic interaction between Bradyrhizobium and soybean was examined. The results show that chitosaccharides either positively or negatively affect soybean nodulation or plant growth depending on their molecular weight, concentration and the application methods. When directly added to the in vitro culture media, chitosan of high molecular weight inhibit Bradyrhizobium viability in a dose dependent manner while chitooligosaccharides reduce slightly the bacteria viability only at concentration equal or higher than 50 mg·l-1. Chitooligosaccharides significantly enhance nodule formation and dry mass in soybean roots at doses between 10 and 100 mg·l-1. Both types of chitosaccharides, at the highest doses (>500 mg·l-1), negatively affect plant height and root size, whereas medium doses (50 to 100 mg·l-1) increase slightly leave number. Under field conditions, foliar application of both chitosaccharides enhances growth and nodulation of soybean plants. nevertheless, using this application method, chitosan remains more effective than chitooligosaccharides.

Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an antioxidant that plays an important role in the maintenance of male fertility. The aim of this study was to compare the profile of enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase in the seminal plasma of normozoosperm and those of pathological sperm. Thus, the activity of glutathione peroxidase was determined in the seminal plasma of 20 normozoosperms, 9 azoosperms and 31 oligoasthenoteratozoosperms. It was 37.58 ± 3.14 U/l in normozoosperms, 39.39 ± 2.27 U/l in oligoasthenoteratozoosperms, and 29.77 ± 2.62 U/l in azoosperms. The mean GPx enzyme activity of normozoosperms did not differ significantly from that of oligoasthenoteratozoosperms and azoosperms. In contrast, comparison of enzyme activity between abnormal sperms gave a significant difference. This study showed that glutathione peroxidase enzymatic activity is not related to sperm quality.

The colonization of maize(Zea mays l.) and peanut(Arachis hypogaea l.) by the fungal pathogen Aspergillus flavus results in the contamination of kernels with carcinogenic mycotoxins known as aflatoxins leading to economic losses and potential health threats to humans. The regulation of aflatoxin biosynthesis in various Aspergillus spp. has been extensively studied, and has been shown to be related to oxidative stress responses. Given that environmental stresses such as drought and heat stress result in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS) within host plant tissues, host-derived ROS may play an important role in cross-kingdom communication between host plants and A. flavus. Recent technological advances in plant breeding have provided the tools necessary to study and apply knowledge derived from metabolomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic studies in the context of productive breeding populations. Here, we review the current understanding of the potential roles of environmental stress, ROS, and aflatoxin in the interaction between *** and its host plants, and the current status in molecular breeding and marker discovery for resistance to A. flavus colonization and aflatoxin contamination in maize and peanut. We will also propose future directions and a working model for continuing research efforts linking environmental stress tolerance and aflatoxin contamination resistance in maize and peanut.

Hydrological dynamics affect water levels and thus affecting ecosystem structure and functions. lake levels in tropical ecosystems affect phosphorous input through runoff from adjacent watersheds. The resultant biological community, water and sediment quality of the lakes due to water level changes is a reflection of the geology of the area and the anthropogenic activities in the watershed. The study conducted between January 2018 and December 2019 was to explore relationships between the phosphorous input and Water level Fluctuations (WlF) recorded by Water Resource Authority (WRA). lake water samples were analyzed in the laboratory for phosphorous using molybdenum blue-ascorbic method and recorded using spectrophotometer. Chlorophyll-a was determined by extracting a filtered sample with 15 ml acetone and incubating overnight and thereafter read using a double beam spectrophotometer. Total Suspended Solids (TSS) was determined by filtering 200 ml of a water sample and dried overnight at 105°C. The lowest and highest phosphorous concentrations recorded were 0.2 mg/l and 0.42 mg/l at nST7 and nST2, respectively. Measurements of Chlorophyll-a were 0.32 mg/l and 0.42 mg/l at nST9 and nST2, respectively. Secchi transparency measurements were 32.9 cm at nST3 and 84 cm at nST1. The highest and lowest TSS concentrations were 0.14 mg/l and 0.13 mg/l at nTS1 and nST8, respectively. The hydrodynamic regime in most tropical lakes plays a significant role in the re-reaction of phosphorous that consequently influences productivity. Tropical lakes have extreme lake level fluctuations which accelerate the production process. The influence of water level changes on aquatic productivity is crucial in most tropical lakes and should be taken into consideration when assessing the environmental impacts.

The formation process and multi-layer structures of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) materialsformed by high-dose n^+ and O^+ implantation and high-temperature annealing have been inves-tigated. Infrared (IR) absorption and reflection spectra have been measured for SOI struc-tures. From detailed theoretical analysis and computer simulation of the IR reflection interfer-ence spectra, refractive index profiles of SOI structures were obtained. It has been provedthat the high-quality SOI materials could be produced with ion beam techniques. The resultsof this study also indicate that the IR absorption and reflection spectroscopic measurementare nondestructive and effective methods to examine the quality of SOI materials.

The spectrum analysis obtained by Fast Fourier Transform of the Photoacoustic In-duced by laser Ablation (PIlA) during laser assisted paints removal process is de-scribed, in order to identify the presence of paint components on a metallic surface, optimize the ablation rate and propose the method as a cleaning process monitoring. The process was carried out using a low-cost experimental setup which includes a burst-mode nd:YAG laser, an electret microphone, an audio amplifier device and an oscilloscope, to record the acoustic pulse and analyze it. The samples surface mor-phology was characterized by Optical Microscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) before and after irradiation to visualize the formation of craters. As additional monitoring technique, the laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (lIBS) was used. The potential of the analysis for qualitative monitoring of coating removal was demonstrated due to the coincidence of the information provided by lIBS and PIlA techniques.

The reliability optimization process in earthquake engineering requires that the expected present value of the total cost is minimized, including the initial cost as well as the damage costs caused by earthquakes, which include indirect costs. One of these costs is concerned with how much society is willing to invest for preserving human life. Ethical principles, on which to base the assessment of this cost, are presented and discussed in this work. Individual and social values are analyzed. Finally, an optimal seismic design coefficient with the results obtained is calculated for a site with low seismicity.

AIM: To investigate cancer cell absence or presence in wide excision after biopsy of squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and basal cell carcinoma(BCC) ***: 200 patients(100 BCC and 100 SCC) from the same dermatology clinic, who had positive margin upon biopsy, were selected from a computer generated randomized report. All selected patients had wide excision following biopsy. To determine the correlation of gender, age distribution and cancer absence, BCC and SCC cases were separated based on excision-cancer absent or present after wide excision. χ2 tests, Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze the ratio of male to female between excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present patients, while Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare the age distribution in the two groups. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 16.0 for ***: Our retrospective chart review of the patients showed that cancer cells were absent in 49% of BCC patients(n = 100) and 64% of SCC patients(n = 100) who had previously had positive margins upon biopsy. Gender analysis showed the ratio of male to female(M/F) in the BCC arm was significantly higher compared with the SCC arm in those with excision-cancer absent(2.06 vs 0.66; P = 0.004; χ2 test). But M/F of excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present in neither BCC nor SCC patients was statistically significant. Age adjustment showed no significant difference between excision-cancer absent and excision-cancer present in BCC and SCC patients. nevertheless, in excision-cancer absent cases, the age distribution showed that the BCC patients were younger than SCC patients(average age 67 vs 74; P nn-Whitney U test). In addition, our data also indicated that in the patient group of 71-80 years old, there were more SCC patients who showed excision-cancer absence(67.6% vs 39.4%; P = 0.02; χ2 test).COnClUSIOn: Our study indicates that approximately 50% or more of BCC and SCC patients with positive margin

油砂沥青及其衍生产品中含有悬浮的甲苯不溶物如粘土和碳质固体颗粒,会导致后续加工过程中的结垢、催化剂失活和床层堵塞。笔者从油砂沥青衍生产品中分离出甲苯不溶物并进行了分析表征。研究发现,油砂沥青渣油中的甲苯不溶物主要是超细的硅铝酸盐粘土颗粒,结合了部分干酪根成分;焦化渣油和焦化瓦斯油储罐中沉积的甲苯不溶物类似焦炭;焦化瓦斯油中的甲苯不溶物主要是碳质有机物颗粒,但氮、氧含量相对丰富,并含少量矿物质和粘土颗粒,含氮的杂环化合物如吡咯类物质的存在可能是导致焦化瓦斯油中甲苯不溶物生成的主要因素。
