Although many agents for acute ischemic stroke treatment have been developed from extensive preclinical studies, most have failed in clinical trials. As a result, researchers are seeking other methods or agents based on previous studies. Among the various prospective approaches, vascular protection might be the key for development of therapeutic agents for stroke and for improvements in the efficacy and safety of conventional therapies. Traditional medicines in Asian countries are based on clinical experiences and literature accumulated over thousands of years. To date, many studies have used traditional herbal medicines to prove or develop new agents based on stroke treatments mentioned in traditional medicinal theory or other clinical data. In the current review, we describe the vascular factors related to ischemic brain damage and the herbal medicines that impact these factors, including Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, Notoginseng Radix, and Curcumae Rhizoma, based on scientific reports and traditional medical theory. Further, we point out the problems associated with herbal medicines in stroke research and propose better methodologies to address these problems.

Genevestigator analysis has indicated heat shock induction of transcripts for NADPH-thioredoxin reduc-tase, type C （NTRC） in the light. Here we show overexpression of NTRC in Arabidopsis （NTRC°E） resulting in enhanced tolerance to heat shock, whereas NTRC knockout mutant plants （ntrcl） exhibit a temperature sensitive phenotype. To investigate the underlying mechanism of this phenotype, we analyzed the protein＇s biochemical properties and protein structure. NTRC assembles into homopolymeric structures of varying complexity with functions as a disulfide reductase, a foldase chaperone, and as a holdase chaperone. The multiple functions of NTRC are closely correlated with protein structure.. Complexes of higher molecular weight （HMW） showed stronger activity as a holdase chaperone, while low molecular weight （LMW） species exhibited weaker holdase chaperone activity but stronger disulfide reductase and fol-dase chaperone activities. Heat shock converted LMW proteins into HMW complexes. Mutations of the two active site Cys residues of NTRC into Ser （C217/454S-NTRC） led to a complete inactivation of its disulfide reductase and foldase chaperone functions, but conferred only a slight decrease in its holdase chaperone function. The overexpression of the mutated C217/454S-NTRC provided Arabidopsis with a similar degree of thermotolerance compared with that of NTRC°E plants. However, after prolonged incubation under heat shock, NTRC°E plants tolerated the stress to a higher degree than C217/454S-NTRC°E plants. The results suggest that the heat shock-mediated holdase chaperone function of NTRC is responsible for the increased thermotolerance of Arabidopsis and the activity is significantly supported by NADPH.

Mobility support to change the connection from one access point(AP)to the next(i.e.,handover)becomes one of the important issues in IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks(WLANs).During handover,the channel scanning procedure,which aims to collect neighbor AP(NAP)information on all available channels,accounts for most of the delay *** reduce the channel scanning procedure,a neighbor beacon frame transmission scheme(N-BTS)was proposed for a seamless handover.N-BTS can provide a seamless handover by removing the channel scanning ***,N-BTS always requires operating overhead even if there are few mobile stations(MSs)for the ***,this paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based handover scheme with neighbor beacon frame transmission(man-BTS)to properly consider the use of *** optimization equation is deﬁned to maximize the expected reward toﬁnd the optimal policy and is solved using *** results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the comparison schemes in terms of the expected reward.

AIM:To investigate the clinical characteristics of left primary epiploic appendagitis and to compare them with those of left colonic ***:We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and radiologic images of the patients who presented with left-sided acute abdominal pain and had computer tomography(CT) performed at the time of presentation showing radiological signs of left primary epiploic appendagitis(PEA) or left acute colonic diverticulitis(ACD) between January 2001 and December 2011. A total of 53 consecutive patients were enrolled and evaluated. We also compared the clinical characteristics,laboratory findings,treatments,and clinical results of left PEA with those of left ***:Twenty-eight patients and twenty-five patients were diagnosed with symptomatic left PEA and ACD,respectively. The patients with left PEA had focal abdominal tenderness on the left lower quadrant(82.1%). On CT examination,most(89.3%) of the patients with left PEA were found to have an oval fatty mass with a hyperattenuated ring sign. In cases of left ACD,the patients presented with a more diffuse abdominal tenderness throughout the left side(52.0%vs 14.3%; P = 0.003). The patients with left ACD had fever and rebound tenderness more often than those with left PEA(40.0% vs 7.1%,P = 0.004; 52.0% vs14.3%,P = 0.003,respectively). Laboratory abnormalities such as leukocytosis were also more frequently observed in left ACD(52.0% vs 15.4%,P = 0.006).CONCLUSION:If patients have left-sided localized abdominal pain without associated symptoms or laboratory abnormalities,clinicians should suspect the diagnosis of PEA and consider a CT scan.

OBJECTIVES: Venous infarctions after surgical resection of meningiomas were due to anatomical sacrifice of cortical vein. These venous infarctions resulted in swelling, hemorrhage, and neuronal death. So prevention of venous infarction is important for surgery of meningiomas. In this retrospective studies, we evaluated the factors associated with postoperative venous infarction. METHODS: Between 1993 and 2010, 802 patients with intracranial meningiomas underwent microsurgical resection between 1993 and 2010. Of these patients, 27 patients （3.4%） presented symptomatic neurological deterioration because of postoperative venous infarction. There were 5 male （18.5%） and 22 female （81.5%） patients. The mean age was 55.75 years （range, 33-81 years）. Mean maximum diameter was 4.89 mm （range, 1.5-8.0 mm）. The tumor locations were convexity （12 cases, 44.4%）, parasagittal （7 cases, 25.9%）, falx （4 cases, 14.8%）, sphenoid ridge （3 cases, 11.1%）, and trigon （1 cases, 3.7%）. The following factors associated with venous infarction were included in the statistical analysis: sex, age, location, edema, size, and resection. RESULTS: The incidence of venous infarction was 7.3% （22 of 303 cases） in large sized meningiomas （size ≥ 4 cm）. But in small sized ones （size ＜ 4 cm）, the incidence was 1.0% （5 of 499 cases, p ＜ 0.001）. Another factor related to venous infarction was perilesional edema. Meningiomas with perilesional edema were higher incidence of venous infarction than without ones （15/283 （5.3%） vs 12/512（2.3%）, p = 0.032）. We found no significant relationship between venous infarction and age, sex, location, extent of resection. CONCLUSION: It is important to make an effort to preserve main cortical vein during operation as much as possible, especially in meningiomas which were larger than 4 cm and combined with moderate to severe edema.

Object:Although bone invasion and hyperostosis are common phenomena in patients with intracranial meningiomas,the basic pathomechanism is not fully *** on an immunohistochemical study of surgically-resected samples with hyperostosis,we postulate a possible mechanism of hyperostosis in patients with intracranial *** and Methods:Forty-six meningiomas were evaluated in this ***-six meningiomas associated with hyperostosis specimens served as the study group and 20 meningiomas without any bony changes served as controls.A histologic examination showed benign meningiomas in 42 samples and atypical meningiomas in 4 *** immunohistochemical staining technique was used to detect the expression of matrix metalloproteinase（MMP）-2,-9,and-13,membrane type（MT）1-MMP),estrogen receptor（ER）,and progesterone receptor（PR） in the main tumor and hyperostotic portions of the studied ***:In the non-hyperostosis group,expression of MMP-13,MT1-MMP,and ER was significantly less than in the main tumor portion of the hyperostotic meningiomas,while there was no difference in the expression of MMP-2 and-9 and PR in the main tumor between the non-hyperostosis and hyperostosis *** the hyperostosis group,the immunoreactivity of MMP-2 in the hyperostotic portion revealed a higher pattern of expression than the main tumor（p＜0.002）.The expression of MMP-9,MT1-MMP,ER,and PR had relatively positive immunoreactivity in the main tumor portion（P＜0.05）.Conclusions:High expression of MMP-13 and MT1-MMP in the tumor portion of hyperostosis of meningiomas might contribute to the initiation of *** MMP-2 in hyperostotic lesions may change the physiologic circumstance of skull bone,thus playing an important role in the formation of hyperostosis.

The lander of China’s Chang’E-3 spacecraft is equipped with a 15-cm telescope that is very useful for monitoring celestial objects in the ultraviolet(UV) band(245–340 nm).The Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope(LUT) is the first long-term lunar-based astronomical observatory,that can make uninterrupted observations of a target from the *** we present the continuous complete UV light curve of the eclipsing binary TX Herculis(TX Her).The analysis of the light curve suggests that TX Her is a detached *** dip in the light curve was explained by the emergence of a stellar dark spot on the less massive F0 type *** cyclic change of arrival eclipse times for the system reveals that it contains an additional stellar companion with a minimal mass of 0.35 M⊙ and a period of 48.92 yr,which is supported by the detected light contribution of the third body from light curve *** third body may play an important role in the formation of the present short-period system TX Her.
