AIM: To investigate the performance of Gadofluorine P-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) on the diagnosis of diabetes in a streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat ***: Fischer 344 rats were treated with *** not treated with STZ served as controls. T1-weighted MRI was performed using a 3T scanner before and after the injection of Gd-DOTA or Gadofluorine P(6 diabetic rats, 5 controls). The normalized signal intensity(SI) and the enhancement ratio(ER) of the pancreas were measured at each time point, and the values were compared between the normal and diabetic rats using the mann-Whitney test. In addition,the values were correlated with the mean islet *** cut-off values were calculated using a positive test based on receiver operating *** Gd concentration after the injection of each contrast media was measured using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in a separate set of rats(4 diabetic rats, 4 controls for Gadofluorine P; 2, 2 for Gd-DOTA).RESULTS: The normalized SI and ER of the pancreas using Gd-DOTA were not significantly different between diabetic rats and controls. With Gadofluorine P, the values were significantly higher in the diabetic rats than in the control rats 30 min after injection(P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve that differentiated diabetic rats from the control group was greater for Gadofluorine P than for Gd-DOTA(0.967 vs 0.667, P = 0.085). An increase in normalized SI 30 min after Gadofluorine P was correlated with a decrease in the mean number of islets(r 2 = 0.510, P = 0.014). Intra-pancreatic Gd was higher in rats with Gadofluorine P injection than Gd-DOTA injection(Gadofluorine P vs Gd-DOTA, 7.37 vs 0.00, P < 0.01). Berberine inhibits inflammatory activation of rat brain microglia

Chronic activation of microglial cells endangers neuronal survival through the release of various proinflammatory and neurotoxic factors. Berberine, the effective ingredient of Coptidis Rhizoma and Cortex Phellodendti, has a wide range of pharmacological functions, including anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerotic and anti-cancer effects. The neuroprotective potential of berberine has previously been demonstrated. The present study aimed to examine whether berberine could repress microglial activation and can be considered a potential therapeutic candidate to target neurodegenerative diseases. Primary microglial cells and BV2 microglial cells were cultured and stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide （LPS）. Berberine chloride was treated prior to LPS or simultaneously with LPS stimulation. Results revealed that berberine was effective at inhibiting nitric oxide release from primary microglial cells when cells were exposed to the compound prior to LPS or simultaneously with LPS. It also reduced the LPS-stimulated production of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, prostaglandin E2, and intracellular reactive oxygen species and nuclear factor-kappa activation. Additionally, berberine reduced nitric oxide release from microglia stimulated with interferon-γ and amyloid β. These results suggest that berberine provides neuroprotection by reducing the production of various neurotoxic molecules from activated microglia.

李白的《静夜思》是当代中国知名度最高、普及度最广的小诗,堪称天下第一绝句。诗中物象的亲切性、音韵的和美性、思维的单线性、空间的可变性、时间的永恒性、身心的依存性,组成了一个独一无二的魅力系统。但是,《静夜思》在整个唐代并未受到评论家和诗选家们的青睐。而且"床前明月光"和"举头望明月"两句,也是明代人从李白原句"床前看月光"和"举头望山月"改动而成的。"明月……明月……故乡",不仅大大增强了宇宙间的空明感,强劲延续了望月思乡的诗歌传统,而且大大凸显了明代文人群体的"大明"意识。尤其是明末清初的民族情绪,更使得这两个"明"字别具意味。因为在古典诗文中,"故乡"与"故国"同义。从明清两代开始,中国读者用集体的智慧,小小修改了李白的《静夜思》,大大强化了"作品的绝对独特性",又用集体的热情,一代代人亿万次地持续诵读。时至今日,终于在千淘万汰之后,将"床前明月光……"托上了民族记忆的珠穆朗玛峰。透视一首默默无闻的唐诗演变为天下第一绝句的特殊历程,后人可以在文学创作、作品改编、接受研究等方面获得多向度的启迪。

Colonic lymphangiomatosis associated with anemia

Lymphangioma is an uncommon malformation of lymphatic system. Multiple colonic lymphangioma named as lymphangiomatosis is considered an extremely rare disease. Although lymphangioma is a benign tumor and most colonic lymphangiomas do not cause symptoms and do not require treatment, resection of lymphangioma is necessary in the presence of symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, intussusceptions. We report a case of colonic lymphangiomatosis in a man who presented with abdominal discomfort and anemia, which was diagnosed and treated with endoscopic snare polypectomy.

Cholangiographic characteristics of common bile duct dilatation in children

AIM: To investigate whether children with congenital common bile duct dilatation(CBDD) differ from children with obstructive CBDD in cholangiographic ***: In this retrospective cohort study, the baseline data and the results of imaging analyses were reviewed among children who had endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) due to CBDD. ERCP was performed on all pediatric patients by experienced pediatric endoscopists. The maximal transverse diameter of the common bile duct(CBD) was measured on ERCP. To assess whether ageadjusted CBDD could be used for differential diagnosis, a CBDD severity index(SI) was calculated by dividing the measured CBD diameter by the age-corrected maximal diameter of a normal CBD. RESULTS: A retrospective medical chart review revealed that 85 consecutive children under 16 years of age with hepatobiliary disease and CBDD were referred to Seoul Asan Medical Center. Fiftyfive(64.7%) children had congenital CBDD and 30(35.3%) had obstructive CBDD. The two groups did not differ significantly in terms of clinical characteristics except for sex. The congenital and obstructive CBDD groups did not differ significantly in terms of mean CBD diameter(19.3 ± 9.6 mm vs 12.2 ± 4.1 mm, P > 0.05). However, congenital CBDD cases had a significantly higher mean SI than obstructive CBDD cases(3.62 ± 1.64 vs 1.98 ± 0.71, P = 0.01). In multivariate analysis, an SI value ≥ 2.32 and comorbidity with anomalous union of pancreaticobiliary duct(APBDU) in ERCP independently predicted congenital ***: Measuring the CBD may aid the differential diagnosis of both CBDD and APBDU in children.

Butein effects in colitis and interleukin-6/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 expression

AIM: To evaluate the effects of butein on inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9), andcolitis in interleukin(IL)-10-/- ***: To synchronize colitis, 8- to 10-wk-old IL-10-/- mice were fed pellet-chow containing piroxicam for 2 wk. Subsequently, phosphate-buffered saline or butein(1 mg/kg per day, ip) was injected for 4 wk. Histologic scores, inflammatory cytokines, MMP-9 and phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(p STAT3) expressions were analyzed in IL-10-/- mice and in Colo 205 ***: Butein reduced the colonic inflammatory score by > 50%. Expression levels of IL-6, IL-1β, interferon(IFN)-γ and MMP-9 were decreased in the colons of mice exposed to butein, whereas other inflammatory cytokines(IL-17 A, IL-21 and IL-22) were unchanged. Immunohistochemical staining for p STAT3 and MMP-9 was significantly decreased in the buteintreated groups compared with the controls. Butein inhibited IL-6-induced activation of STAT3 in Colo 205 ***: Butein ameliorated colitis in IL-10-/-mice by regulating IL-6/STAT3 and MMP-9 activation.

Neuroprotective Effect of Chunghyuldan(Qing Xue Dan)on Hypoxia-Reoxygenation Induced Damage of Neuroblastoma 2a Cell Lines

Objectives： Chunghyuldan （CHD）, a combinatorial drug that has anti-hyperlipidemic and anti inflammatory activities, has been shown to reduce infarct volume in a focal ischemia-reperfusion rat model. To explore the molecular basis of CHD＇s neuroprotective effect, we examined whether CHD shows a cell-protective activity and has a regulatory effect on Bax and/or B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 （Bcl-2） expression in mouse neuroblastoma 2a （N2a） cells subjected to hypoxia-reoxygenation （H/R）. Methods： In order to evaluate the effects of CHD on the cytotoxicity induced from hypoxia or H/R condition, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） assay was performed. To explore whether the suppression of neural damage when pre-treated with CHD is associated with its anti-apoptotic effect, the CHD effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was analyzed by Western blotting analysis. Results： Cytotoxicity of N2a cell line was slightly increased in 42 h hypoxia condition and dramatically increased under the H/R condition. CHD treatment markedly decreased the cytotoxicity in both conditions （P〈0.01, P〈0.05）. H/R markedly increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax, but slightly increased the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, compared with the normoxia or hypoxia group. CHD significantly decreased Bax expression （P〈0.01） and slightly decreased Bcl-2 expression （P〉0.05）, resulted in a reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in N2a cells subjected to H/R. Conclusion： CHD has neuroprotective effect in N2a cells subjected to H/R, which might be derived at least in part from its ability to decrease the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax.
