The present work deals with the As（Ⅴ） removal from an aqueous medium by calcined refractory grade bauxite （CRB） as a function of solution pH, time, As（Ⅴ） concentration and temperature. The residual As（Ⅴ） was lowered from 2 mg/L to below 0.01 mg/L in the optimum pH range 4.0-7.0 using a 5 g/L CRB within 3 h contact time. The adsorption data fits well with Langmuir isotherm and yielded Langmuir monolayer capacity of 1.78 mg As（Ⅴ）/g of CRB at pH 7.0. Presence of anions such as silicate and phosphate decreased As（Ⅴ） adsorption efficiency. An increase temperature resulted a decrease in the amount of As（Ⅴ） adsorbed by 6%. The continuous fixed bed column study showed that at the adsorbent bed depth of 30 cm and residence time of 168 min, the CRB was capable of treating 340 bed volumes of As（V） spiked water （C0 = 2 mg/L） before breakthrough （Ce = 0.01 mg/L）. This solid adsorbent, although not reusable, can be considered for design of adsorption columns as an efficiency arsenic adsorption media.

A safety valve functions to control an upper limit of pressure inside the LNG line of transportation. If the pressure inside the safety valve nozzle exceeds a predetermined value on the valve sheet which plugs the nozzle, an excess of LNG discharges through the gap between the nozzle exit and valve sheet. In this situation, the forces acting on the valve sheet are gasdynamic forces generated by the discharge of LNG and mechanical forces supported by the spring behind the valve sheet. The flow through the gap is very complicated, involving vortices, flow separation, and shock waves. These affect adversely on the system accompanying with noise and vibration. The present study aims at understanding the flow physics of safety valve. A computational work using the twodimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations is carried out to simulate the gas flow between the nozzle exit and valve sheet, and compared with the theoretical results. It has been found that there exists a distance between nozzle exit and valve sheet in which the thrust coefficient at the valve sheet increases abruptly.

This paper considers an optimal sequential inspection schedule for a second-hand product after that the free nonrenewable warranty is expired. The length of warranty is prespecified and during the warranty period, the product is minimally repaired by the dealer when it fails. Following the expiration of the non-renewing warranty, the product is inspected and upgraded sequentially a fixed number of times at the expenses of the *** each inspection, the failure rate of the product is reduced proportionally so that the product is upgraded. The product is assumed to deteriorate as it ages and the replacement of the product occurs when a fixed number of inspections are rendered. In addition,the intervals between two successive inspections are assumed to decrease monotonically. The main objective of this paper is to determine the optimal improvement level to upgrade the product at each inspection so that the expected maintenance cost during the life cycle of the product is minimized from the perspective of the customer. Under the given cost structures, we derive an explicit formula to obtain the expected maintenance cost incurred during the life cycle of the product and discuss the method to find the optimal level of the improvement analytically in case the failure times follow the Weibull distribution. Numerical results are analyzed to observe the impact of relevant parameters on the optimal solution.

AIM: To investigate long-term effects of Garcinia Cambogia (GC), weight-loss supplement, on adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese mice. METHODS: Obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD, 45 kcal% fat) with or without GC (1%, w/w) for 16 wk. The HFD contained 45 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 35 kcal% carbohydrate. They were given free access to food and distilled water, and food consumption and body weight were measured daily and weekly, respectively. Data were expressed as the mean ± SE. Statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package for the social science software program. Student's t test was used to assess the differences between the groups. Statistical significance was considered at P < 0.05. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in body weight and food intake between the groups. However, the supplementation of GC significantly lowered visceral fat accumulation and adipocyte size via inhibition of fatty acid synthase activity and its mRNA expression in visceral adipose tissue, along with enhanced enzymatic activity and gene expression involved in adipose fatty acid β-oxidation. Moreover, GC supplementation resulted in significant reductions in glucose intolerance and the plasma resistin level in the HFD-fed mice. However, we first demonstrated that it increased hepatic collagen accumulation, lipid peroxidation and mRNA levels of genes related to oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) and inflammatory responses (tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) as well as plasma alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase levels, although HFD-induced hepatic steatosis was not altered. CONCLUSION: GC protects against HFD-induced obesity by modulating adipose fatty acid synthesis and β-oxidation but induces hepatic fibrosis, inflammation and oxidative stress.

Chronic liver diseases with different aetiologies rely on the chronic activation of liver injuries which result in a fibrogenesis progression to the end stage of cirrhosis and liver *** on the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of a liver fibrosis,there has been proposed several kinds of approaches for the treatment of liver ***,liver gene therapy has been developed as an alternative way to liver transplantation,which is the only effective therapy for chronic liver *** activation of hepatic stellate cells,a subsequent release of inflammatory cytokines and an accumulation of extracellular matrix during the liver fibrogenesis are the major obstacles to the treatment of liver *** targeted strategies have been developed,such as antisense oligodeoxynucleotides,RNA interference and decoy oligodeoxynucleotides to overcome this *** this report an overview will be provided of targeted strategies for the treatment of liver cirrhosis,and particularly,of the targeted gene therapy using short RNA and DNA segments.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders,characterized by abdominal pain,bloating,and changes in bowel *** symptoms cannot be explained by structural abnormalities and there is no specific laboratory test or biomarker for ***,IBS is classified as a functional disorder with diagnosis dependent on the history taking about manifested symptoms and careful physical *** a great deal of research has been carried out in this area,the pathophysiology of IBS is complex and not completely *** factors are thought to contribute to the symptoms in IBS patients;altered gastrointestinal motility,visceral hypersensitivity,and the brain-gut interaction are important classical concepts in IBS *** areas of research in this arena include inflammation,postinfectious low-grade inflammation,genetic and immunologic factors,an altered microbiota,dietary factors,and enteroendocrine *** emerging studies have not shown consistent results,provoking controversy in the IBS ***,certain lines of evidence suggest that these mechanisms are important at least a subset of IBS patients,confirming that IBS symptoms cannot be explained by a single etiological ***,it is important to keep in mind that IBS requires a more holistic approach to determining effective treatment and understanding the underlying mechanisms.

Ulcerative colitis(UC) is an inflammation-associated disease of the colon and *** onset and progress of the disease are directly influenced by the nature of the intestinal microflora,the intestinal barrier function,and the immunological responses of the *** epithelial invasion of pathogenic bacteria due to excess contact and/or barrier dysfunction is related to inflammation mediated by intestinal immune *** the etiology of UC is not clearly understood,recent studies have shown a rising incidence of UC worldwide,and this phenomenon is more prominent in Asian countries and in Asian immigrants in Western *** increased prevalence of UC also contributes to an increased risk of developing colorectal *** factors,including changes in dietary habits,have been suggested as major risk factors of UC.A systematic review showed a negative association between UC risk and vegetable intake,whereas total fat,omega-6 fatty acids and meat intake were positively associated with an increased risk of *** dietary factors and energy balance have been suggested as having important roles in inducing changes in the microbial population and intestinal barrier integrity and in regulating inflammatory immune responses,directly or *** energy intake is now known to increase pathogenic microbial ***,the application of appropriate probiotics may reverse the pathogenic progression of the *** the meantime,dietary anti-inflammatory compounds,including omega-3 fatty acids and other phytochemicals,may directly suppress inflammatory responses in the course of UC *** this review,the increased prevalence of UC and its management are interpreted from the standpoint of nutritional modulation to regulate the intestinal microflora population,intestinal epithelium permeability,and inflammatory responses.

In situ measurement of atmospheric carbon dioxide at Yanbian,China:Estimating its northeast Asian emission regions

High-precision(±0.1 ppm) and high-frequency(hourly averaged) in situ measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2) were made for the first time from August 2005 to July 2007 at Yanbian,China using a non-dispersive Infrared(NDIR) analyzer with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Earth System Research Laboratory(NOAA/ESRL) *** results of these measurements are presented in this paper and are used to investigate the regional representativeness of regional background data at Yanbian and determine the CO2 emission source regions in Northeast *** phase of the monthly variations at Yanbian reflects the special regional characteristics,which were overall in excellent agreement with other observatories in the middle-to-high latitudes in the Northern *** a hybrid receptor model to the regional emission source events in cold period(November-April),we estimated the distribution of the major CO2 emissions in the northeast *** results indicated that the strongest potential emission areas contributing to Yanbian are the Beijing & Tianjin metropolitan areas,southwestern part of Shandong Province including Jinan,and *** results of this study reveal the usefulness of in situ CO2 measurements at Yanbian in establishing the scientific foundation for monitoring the large CO2 emission areas in northern China and *** monitoring of CO2 at Yanbian within a regional network should provide significant contributions to both understanding the global/regional carbon cycle and constraining "top-down" emissions in Northeast Asia.
