High-resolution circulation forecasting of the Maenggol Channel, south coast of Korea

The Maenggol Channel and Uldolmok Strait, located on the south-west coast of Korea, have notably strong and complex currents due to tidal effects and to local geological factors. In these areas, electric power has been generated using strong tidal currents, the speed of which is more than 3 m/s during spring tides. The region also provides a shortcut for navigation. These tidal conditions are therefore sometimes useful, but may also cause terrible accidents or severe economic damage, in the absence of accurate information regarding ocean conditions. In April 2014, the passenger ferry MV Sewol capsized in the Maenggol Channel, with 295 passengers killed and 9 still missing. While this was unquestionably a man-made disaster, strong currents were one of the contributing causes. It was also difficult to conduct scuba diving rescue operations given strong current speeds,and accurate prediction of the time when the tide would turn was thus critically needed. In this research, we used the high-resolution coastal circulation forecasting system of KOOS（Korea Operational Oceanographic System） for analysis and simulation of strong tidal currents in such areas with many small islands, using measurements and modeling from this research area. For accurate prediction of tidal currents, small grid size-modeling was needed,and in this study, we identified a suitable grid size that offers efficiency as well as accuracy.

Neurodegenerative disease is a brain disorder caused by the loss of structure andfunction of neurons that lowers the quality of human life. Apart from the limitedpotential for endogenous regeneration, stem cell-based therapies hold considerablepromise for maintaining homeostatic tissue regeneration and enhancingplasticity. Despite many studies, there remains insufficient evidence for stem celltracing and its correlation with endogenous neural cells in brain tissue with threedimensionalstructures. Recent advancements in tissue optical clearing techniqueshave been developed to overcome the existing shortcomings of cross-sectionaltissue analysis in thick and complex tissues. This review focuses on recentprogress of stem cell treatments to improve neurodegenerative disease, andintroduces tissue optical clearing techniques that can implement a threedimensionalimage as a proof of concept. This review provides a more comprehensiveunderstanding of stem cell tracing that will play an important role inevaluating therapeutic efficacy and cellular interrelationship for regeneration inneurodegenerative diseases.

Bisphenol-A polycarbonate/dioctyl phthalate blend samples crystallized at a hydrostatic pressure were investigated by WAXD,DSC and SEM *** novel stereo-open spherulitic structures,i.e.,peony-,cabbage-,seaweed-,and lotus-like spherulites,were observed which belong to a three-dimensional structure and were only composed of crystalline *** foleded-chain lamellar crystal was proved to be the sub-structure of these *** study also suggests a new route to grow such crystals so as to promote the understanding of the formation process and mechanism of polymer spherulites.

Despite enthusiastic efforts directed at elucidating critical underlying mechanisms towards the identification of novel therapeutic targets for severe acute pancreatitis(SAP), the disease remains without a specific therapy to be executed within the first hours to days after onset of symptoms. Although earlier management for SAP should aim to either treat organ failure or reduce infectious complications, the current standard of care for the general management of AP in the first hours to days after onset of symptoms include intravenous fluid replacement, nutritional changes, and the use of analgesics with a close monitoring of vital signs. Furthermore, repeated evaluation of severity is very important, as the condition is particularly unstable in the early stages. A standard skill assessment （SA） tool was developed and implemented to evaluate the performance of op- erational forecast models in the Korea operational oceanographic system. The SA tool provided a robust way to assess model skill in the system by comparing predictions and observations, and involved the com- putation of multiple skill metrics including correlation and error skills. User- and system-based acceptance criteria of skill metrics were applied to determine whether predictions were acceptable for the system. To achieve this, the tool produced a time series comparison plot, a skill score table, and an advanced sum- marized diagram to effectively demonstrate the multiple skill scores. Moreover, the SA was conducted to evaluate both atmospheric and hydrodynamic forecast variables. For the atmospheric variables, acceptable error criteria were preferable to acceptable correlation criteria over short timescales, since the mean square error overwhelmed the observation variance. Conversely, for the hydrodynamic variables, acceptable root mean square percentage error （e.g., perms） criteria were preferable to acceptable error （e.g., erms） criteria owing to the spatially variable tidal intensity around the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the SA indicated that predetermined acceptance error criteria were appropriate to satisfy a target central frequency （fc） for which errors fell within the specified limits （i.e., the .fc equals 70%）.

AA5454-O aluminum alloy plates with thicknesses of 1.4 and 1.0 mm were friction-stir-lap-welded (FSLWed).The influences of the tool plunge depth and welding distance on surface appearance,macrostructure and mechanical properties of the FSLWed plates were experimentally *** tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was compared with that of the adhesive-bonded ***-free FSLWed zones were successfully obtained in all the tool plunge depths and the welding *** FSLWed zones exhibited the relatively smooth surface *** all the FSLWed conditions,the FSLWed zone exhibited higher average hardness than the base *** addition,the upper plate exhibited a higher average hardness than the lower plate,although there was no special tendency in spite of the change in the tool plunge depth and the welding *** maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plates was much higher than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy ***,under the FSLW condition of the plunge depth of 1.8 mm and the welding distance of 40 mm,the tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate reached a level about 41% greater than that of the adhesive-bonded aluminum alloy *** addition,the maximum tensile shear load of the FSLWed plate was increased with the increase of the welding distance.

We prepared the DNA-cetyltrimethyl ammonium complex, as well as the same complex intercalated with stable organic free radicals, and studied their magnetic properties by electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectroscopy and by measuring the magnetization on a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The UV-vis and CD spectra of DNA-quaternary alkyl ammonium complex (DNA--Q+) in organic solvent clearly demonstrated that it retained the double helical B-form conformation. The interhelical spacing of double strand DNA (dsDNA) increased when the counter ions (Na+) of phosphate groups of the natural DNA were replaced with the long alkyl quaternary ammonium groups. The inter-helical distance of DNA-cetyltrimethyl ammonium (CTMA) was 39.1  as confirmed by X-ray diffractometry. In general, the magnetization of the DNA-CTMA complex solid was found to be significantly lower than that of natural DNA. Moreover, intercalation of the complex with stable organic free radicals did not improve magnetization, which again was in marked contrast to natural DNA. EMR spectroscopic behavior of the complex in the solid state also was quite different from that of natural DNA: The unique broad EMR signal of natural DNA in the low field region with g-value greater than 10 disappeared in the DNA-CTMA complex.
