Clinical efficacy of 0.05%cyclosporine nano-emulsion in the treatment of dry eye syndrome associated with meibomian gland dysfunction

AIM:To evaluate the clinical efficacy of topical 0.05%cyclosporine nano-emulsion in the treatment of dry eye syndrome(DES)with meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).METHODS:This prospective study included 64 patients with DES and MGD who were randomly assigned to three groups:Group 1(n=24,conventional cyclosporine),Group 2(n=21,nano-emulsion cyclosporine),and Group 3(n=19,control).Lid margin telangiectasia(LMT),meibomian gland secretion(MGS),conjunctival injection(CI),corneal staining(CS),tear break-up time(TBUT),Schirmer test I(STI),Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI),and lipid layer thickness(LLT)was evaluated at 4,8,and 12wk of ***:In Group 3(control),LMT,CS,and CI improved after 8wk,MGS,TBUT after 12wk of *** Group 1(conventional cyclosporine),LMT,MGS,and TBUT improved significantly after 4wk,whereas CS,CI,STI,and LLT improved significantly after 8wk,and OSDI at *** Group 2(nano-cyclosporine),LMT,MGS,CS,CI,TBUT,and OSDI significantly improved after 4wk,and STI after ***,LLT was significantly higher than other groups after ***:Cyclosporine and nano-cyclosporine shows significant improvement in DES with MGD than the control *** contrast,the nano-cyclosporine group shows more statistically improved CI and CS at 4wk,especially LLT at 4,8,and 12wk compared to the conventional cyclosporine group.

Comparative analysis on homogeneity of Pb and Cd in epoxy molding compounds

Reference materials for quantitative determination of regulated heavy metals, such as Pb and Cd in electronic components, were designed and investigated in terms of stability and homogeneity. Reference materials with two concentration levels of heavy metals were prepared by spiking Pb and Cd compounds to epoxy molding compounds made by mixing silica powders and epoxy resin. The concentration changes of the reference materials during stability test for 1 a were not observed. In the homogeneity assessment, the as-prepared reference materials were studied by using three different analytical tools, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), X-ray fluoroescence spectrometry (XRF) and laser ablation ICP mass. The results show different homogeneities by the characteristics of analytical tools and the materials.

Dynamic deformation behavior and microstructural evolution during high-speed rolling of Mg alloy having non-basal texture

The dynamic deformation behaviors and resultant microstructural variations during high-speed rolling(HSR) of a Mg alloy with a non-basal texture are investigated. To this end, AZ31 alloy samples in which the basal poles of most grains are predominantly aligned parallel to the transverse direction(TD) are subjected to hot rolling with different reductions at a rolling speed of 470 m/min. The initial grains with a TD texture are favorable for {10–12} twinning under compression along the normal direction(ND); as a result, {10–12} twins are extensively formed in the material during HSR, and this consequently results in a drastic evolution of texture from the TD texture to the ND texture and a reduction in the grain size. After the initial grains are completely twinned by the {10–12} twinning mechanism, {10–11} contraction twins and {10–11}-{10–12} double twins are formed in the {10–12} twinned grains by further *** the contraction twins and double twins have crystallographic orientations that are favorable for basal slip during HSR, dislocations easily accumulate in these twins and fine recrystallized grains nucleate in the twins to reduce the increased internal strain energy. Until a rolling reduction of 20%, {10–12}twinning is the main mechanism governing the microstructural change during HSR, and subsequently,the microstructural evolution is dominated by the formation of contraction twins and double twins and the dynamic recrystallization in these twins. With an increase in the rolling reduction, the average grain size and internal strain energy of the high-speed-rolled(HSRed) samples decrease and the basal texture evolves from the TD texture to the ND texture more effectively. As a result, the 80% HSRed sample, which is subjected to a large strain at a high strain rate in a single rolling pass, exhibits a fully recrystallized microstructure consisting of equiaxed fine grains and has an ND basal texture without a TD texture component.

Effects of betaine on etnanol-stimulated secretion of IGF-I and IGFBP-1 in rat primary hepatocytes: involvement of p42/44 MAPK activation

AIM： To evaluate the effects of betaine on the ethanolinduced secretion of IGF-I and IGFBP-1 using radioimrnunoassay and Western blotting, respectively, in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. METHODS： Hepatocytes isolated from male SpragueDawley rats were incubated with various concentrations of ethanol and PD98059 procedures. The hepatocytes were also treated with different doses of betaine （10^-5, 10^-4, and 10^-3 mol/L）. We measured IGF-I and IGFBP-1 using radioimmunoassay and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS： The ethanol-induced inhibition of IGF-I secretion was attenuated by betaine in a concentration-dependent manner in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. At 10^-3 mol/L, betaine significantly increased IGF-I secretion but decreased IGFBP-1 secretion. In addition, p42/44 rnitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK） activity was accelerated significantly from 10 min to 5 h after treatment with 10^-3 mol/L betaine. Furthermore, the changes in IGF-1 and IGFBP-1 secretion resulting from the increased betaine-induced p42/44 MAPK activity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes was blocked by treatment with the MAPK inhibitor PD98059. Betaine treatment blocked the ethanol-induced inhibition of IGF-I secretion and p42/44 MAPK activity, and the ethanol-induced increase in IGFBP-1 ***： Betaine modulates the secretion of IGF-I and IGFBP-1 via the activation of p42144 MAPK in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. Betaine also alters the MAPK activations induced by ethanol.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of major causes of cancer mortality worldwide. For decades, ^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) positron emission tomography(PET) has been widely used for staging, predicting prognosis, and detecting cancer recurrence in various types of malignant diseases. Due to low sensitivity of FDG PET for detecting intrahepatic HCC lesions, the clinical value of FDG PET in HCC patients has been limited. However, recent studies with diverse analytic methods have shown that FDG PET has promising role in aiding management of HCC patients. In this review, we will discuss the clinical role of FDG PET for staging, predicting prognosis, and evaluating treatment response in HCC. Further, we will focus on recent clinical studies regarding implication of volumetric FDG PET parameters, the significance of FDG uptake in HCC for selecting treatment and predicting treatment response, and the use of radiomics of FDG PET in HCC.

Diagnostic Indicators for Blood Stasis Syndrome Patients with Gynaecological Diseases

Objective： To investigate the important diagnostic indicators for blood stasis syndrome （BSS） in patients of childbearing age with gynaecological diseases. Methods： A partial least squared-discriminant analysis （PLS-DA） were applied to BSS symptoms data of patients with gynaecological diseases, and the diagnostic indicators used by doctors of Korean medicine （DKMs） among BSS patients with gynaecological diseases were also investigated. Results： A total of 103 patients of childbearing age with gynaecological diseases and 40 healthy controls were enrolled. Among the 103 patients, 63 （61.7%） and 40 （38.8%） were diagnosed with BSS and non-BSS, respectively, and BSS patients exhibited a more severe extent of disease. A score plot of PLS-DA showed clearly different patterns among the 3 groups. Based on the variable importance on projection of PLS-DA model, menstrual pains, dark lumps in the menstrual blood, ileocoecal tenderness and resistance, sharp pains, and sublingual varicosities were selected as the top five most important indicators. Moreover, more than 75% of DKMs chose dark lumps in menstrual blood, menstrual pain, and dark menstrual blood as the diagnostic indicators of BSS in patients with gynaecological diseases, and more than 49% of them also considered sharp pains, dark red tongue, sublingual varicosities, and tendency to bruise easily as diagnostic indicators of BSS. Conclusion： DKMs focused on menstrual symptoms and certain gynaecological symptoms to diagnose BSS patients of childbearing age with female diseases.

Germ cell apoptosis,oxidative stress,antioxidant enzymatic function,and lipid peroxidation in Group B were significantly higher than those in Group *** B exhibited an abnormal testicular morphology and impaired *** contrast,testicular damages were attenuated in the NO2^-treatment groups,which were caused by reduction in superoxide and peroxynitrite levels and an inhibition of caspase-3-dependent *** results of this study suggest NO2^-to be a promising therapeutic agent with anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic properties in testicular I/R injury.

Intermediate-scale Analysis of Landscape Characteristics Affecting Edge Formation in Burned Forests in Samcheok,Korea

Compared to burn interiors, edges exhibit distinct biotic and abiotic conditions that include microclimate, wind speed, sunlight levels, soil composition, moisture content, nutrient availability, population density, and species diversity. This study characterized the landscapes in which burned forest edges formed in Samcheok, Korea. Over the study area, 500-m2 grid cells were generated to capture landscape characteristics. Grid cells intersecting burn boundary lines were designated as edge, while cells without these lines were classified as the interior of burned areas. Topographic variables including slope, elevation, topographic wetness index, solar radiation index, and proportions of fuel and land use types within grid cells were computed in a geographical information system(GIS). Correlation analysis with modified t-test and regression tree analysis were performed to explore the influences of landscape variables on edge formation with avoiding spatial autocorrelation problems. The results indicated that edges formed at low elevations with mild slopes, high topographic wetness, and low solar radiation. Edges were unlikely to form in areas dominated by Japanese red pines at low elevations. Moreover, heterogeneous land use/cover types contributed significantly to edge formation. Different forest management strategies for different landscape conditions can be more effective for enhancing resilience of forests to fire. Reducing susceptible fuel types might be effective at low elevations, while enhancing forest heterogeneity might be more effective at high elevations.

BACKGROUND Ureteral stent insertion is a relatively non-invasive procedure commonly used in the field of urology to resolve urinary ***,they are sometimes forgotten and the risk of complications increases with *** SUMMARY A 43-year-old woman with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections visited our hospital for evaluation of persistent left flank pain,and lower urinary tract symptoms despite anti-biotic *** had received urological surgery in her teens but did not know the details of her ***,ureter,and bladder X-ray and abdominopelvic computed tomography revealed a forgotten left ureteral stent with huge encrustation at both ends and a severely dilated left kidney with parenchymal *** order to remove the ureteral stent,a laparoscopic nephroureterectomy was *** ureteral stent was successfully removed,and she was discharged after *** patient was followed up for two years after surgery and did not show any signs of long-term *** Long indwelling stents can cause dire complications requiring radical *** registry systems,novel stent material development,and proper patient education is important for complication prevention.

Velocity Profiles between Two Baffles in a Horizontal Circular Tube

The shell and tube heat exchanger is an essential part of a power plant for recovering heat transfer between the feed water of a boiler and the wasted *** baffles are also an important element inside the heat *** materials influence the flow pattern in the *** influence of baffles in the velocity profiles was observed using a three-dimensional particle image velocimetry around baffles in a horizontal circular *** velocity of the particles was measured before the baffle and between them in the test *** show that the flows near the front baffle flow were parallel to the vertical wall,and then concentrate on the upper opening of the front *** flows circulate in the front and rear *** flow profiles are related to the Reynolds number(Re) or the flow *** velocity profiles at lower Re number showed a complicated mixing,concentrating on the lower opening of the rear baffle as front *** flow was employed in this study,which was produced using tangential velocities at the *** the entrance of the front baffle,the velocity vector profiles with swirl were much different from that without ***,velocities between two baffles are not much different from those without swirl.
